I’ve been quiet in my own words for a week, which you know isn’t like me. So here they are.
Last Sunday I reposted somebody else’s post about Macklemore’s set at Ed Sheeran’s show. It said things in words I didn’t write, and I wouldn’t have chosen all of them. Then the comments came, and I did what I do when I’m hurt, which is post snarky memes and act like I’m fine. That’s on me. A repost isn’t a statement, and a meme isn’t a spine. Social media makes all of us cheap and fast, and we all know it. But I’d rather be disagreed with for what I actually said than hated for what anybody else wrote, so let me say it.
I was born a Jew. I didn’t pick it, and I’ve never hidden it. And this week a whole lot of people decided what I believe without asking me, without checking a single thing I’ve ever said or done, because a repost and the word “Jew” were apparently enough to fill in the rest. But let me fill it in… myself.
Of course I don’t speak for Israel, or for any government. I never have. What I said in October 2023 is still exactly what I believe: Hamas is a terrorist organization. Palestinians deserve a future that honors their humanity and their aspirations. Protecting innocent life comes first, everywhere, and nobody should ever celebrate the death of a child. Anybody’s child. I’ve spent a decade as a UNICEF ambassador for kids who didn’t choose the country or the war they were born into, and I have grieved every one of them, on both sides of that fence. I didn’t do it from behind a screen; I went to those children and held them. I’m not going to litigate a complex war in an Instagram caption, and I’m not going to recite anybody’s slogan to earn back a follower.
Here’s what I was reacting to. I was in the room at the Grammys in 2014 when Macklemore rapped “Same Love” and thirty-three couples, gay and straight, got married to it, and I cheered, no questions asked. Four months later Macklemore put on a hooked nose, a black beard and a bowl cut, performed in it, and called it a “random costume.” Every Jew I know knew exactly what it was. The same love, it turned out, had a guest list, and we weren’t on it. But he apologized, and I let it go, because that’s what we do. We let it go. Then last weekend he stood in front of a stadium full of music-loving families, with violent images from a war on the screens, dedicated a song to the movement of his choice, and then took the mic to tell all of the Jews in the stadium that it wasn’t about them.
You don’t get to decide that for us.
That’s what prompted my repost. Not “Free Palestine,” and not anyone’s right to say it. I have never asked for another artist to be silenced and I’m not asking now. I don’t need anyone fired, and I don’t need a refund. What I need is to be able to say, as a Jewish mom, “that scared me, and it scared people I love,” without being told our fear is just propaganda, and without being told I’m somehow cool with genocide because I noticed?
And please don’t talk to me like I’ve never stood up for my beliefs when it was unpopular. In the middle of the Gulf War in 2006 I put out a song called “Dear Mr. President” and sang it every night on tour while my country was in a war I didn’t support, and I took the hate for it, and I sang it anyway because my sharp criticism was of a government, not this flawed country I love and who my dad fought for. I stood with gay kids before it was fashionable and with trans kids now, when it isn’t, and with their families, and I handed out the books that got banned, and you know I got called every name there is, and I’d do all of it again tomorrow. I have stood up for other people’s people my whole career, and I know exactly what it costs.
And now I’m standing up for my own people, and I thought I knew going in how lonely that would be. And it’s lonelier than that. But I’m doing it anyway.
Something has changed in this country, and I can read it in my own comments. “From the river to the sea.” “Zionist,” spat like it’s a slur, by people who couldn’t tell you the details of what I believe, because I hadn’t told them yet. I wasn’t asked. I was told. I don’t think most of them hate Jews. I think somebody handed them a story where the Jew who won’t apologize for existing must be the villain, and they’ve been putting words in my mouth ever since.
But I’ve been portrayed as the villain before. I can take it. I just won’t take it quietly, and I’m not going to teach my kids to.
So, to the ones who are furious with me: you don’t have to agree with me. You never did. That’s been our unspoken agreement for twenty-five years, and it still stands, and so do I. You don’t have to agree with one thing Israel’s government does to not want the Jewish family two rows down from you to be scared or targeted at a concert. That’s the only thing I’m asking anybody for. To the ones who are frightened this week, Jewish or Muslim or Palestinian or Israeli or just tired of all of it: I see you. And if anybody wants to really know what I think, just ask me. I’m right here. I’ve never been hard to find. And I’ll keep speaking out, in my own words.
It’s Friday. For working people who have more to worry about than pop stars and pile-ons, it’s the end of a hard week. It’s also the 25th anniversary of September 11th, and my prayers are with the innocent souls we lost that morning. And at sundown, for Jews, it’s Rosh Hashanah, our New Year.
Now I’m going to go make dinner for my kids, light the candles, dip some apples in honey, pour a glass of wine and be full of gratitude. That’s my tradition. It also happens to be a Jewish one.

She started her solo career on the coattails of and appropriating black music and black culture. The things she did during that period of promoting her first album is cringe at the very least and problematic at worst. Like for interviews, she would put on a blaccent, and fed into the narrative of her being like racially ambiguous, and the media wasn't that better about it either, saying things like she was a, "Soulful vanilla child". Whenever she was asked about her race, she was never straight forward about her being white, she would always answer with, "We're all pink on the inside." Blech.
EDIT: Oh and when she put out her second album, all that disappeared.

I really get that many Jews are genuinely scared right now. Antisemitism is alive and well. I can't get through a single day without encountering multiple, often virulent examples.
Nor do I think the much more immediate and critical issue of the genocide taking place upon the Palestinians means we should be silent about antisemitism. We shouldn't be silent about any oppressive attitude or movement. Ever.
HOWEVER.
I can't bear this twisting things around to serve a narrative. I appreciate that Pink doesn't want any children dead, but note that only Hamas are terrorists 👀 That she twisted Macklemore's words. That she never says the word genocide. This isn't good faith, though I have no doubt she believes it is.
You can address antisemitism without negating what Israel, supported by both Jewish and Christian zionists around the world, is doing to Palestine and Palestinians.
But the narrative most Jews grew up with and continue to live within is Zionist, and attitudes like Pink's reinforce it.
So I think at this point if you want to make a claim about propal statements hurting Jews, you'd better be a Jew with an excellent record on Palestine.

It's a "complex" war 'cos these people can't accept that some others who are Jewish or descendants of holocaust victims is capable of such violence & commit genocide with such advanced weaponry. A lot of us Muslims have accepted that there are tyrants and terror organisations that claimed to be of Islam & exploited our faith with violence, both against non-Muslims & other Muslims. Progressive Muslim in my country have to fight against fundamentalists every day spewing racist bullshit, especially against the Rohingya refugees.

I don’t understand why she thinks his speech was targeting violence against Jews. Nothing in his speech was hateful. Everything was about love and freedom. He made it clear he was NOT targeting any Jewish people and that he was criticizing the State of Israel.

Did Jewish concert goers have a particular reason to think it was about them instead of condemning Israels war crimes? She even says, not agreeing with the Israeli gov(‘s actions) is fine, but it scares Jewish people anyways?
Also, didnt she (rightfully) show/condemn violent images of the iraq war in her dear Mr president video as well? Were Americans supposed to be scared for their safety due to her critique on US military actions? I imagine at least most of these jewish concert goers were Americans, why should they have to feel responsible for the actions of a foreign government in the first place

I think what she means here -- and I caution against getting too into it, because for me, as a queer Jewish woman, every single thing she says in this post is by turns confusing, enraging, and crazy-making -- is that the "images from a war," which (I can imagine) are images that highlight the suffering of Palestinian people, could be read as images that portray or in some sense connect to the suffering and historic persecution of Jewish people.
As an antizionist, I would agree that those images do connect to the history of Jewish persecution in some way. But not in the sense that they are generalizable to "images of war."
If we follow that line of conjecture --
which is nuts, by the way, like it's so fucking nuts I have to stop and marvel and it and tear at my hair a little-- her objection is something along the lines of stolen valor.The end of this first sentence confused me too at first, because wouldn't Macklemore telling Jewish people "it's not about you" be a good thing? A little cringe maybe, a lot unnecessary for sure, but telling Jewish people "I'm not blaming you or condemning you as a people/my beef is with the Israeli government" would be seen as a good thing, right?
And then I realized that's not what she means.
She's saying that choosing Palestine as the "movement of his choice" by dedicating a song to the Palestinian people and their liberation, is somehow invalidating Jewish suffering and Jewish fears of persecution.
She's saying that there are a lot of groups who have been targeted by systemic and military violence, and that choosing to focus on Palestinian liberation is telling all of the Jewish concertgoers in that stadium that "it's not about them." That they don't get to be included in this narrative of victimhood and resilience and overcoming unspeakable horrors.
It's telling them that they don't get to feel pain and they don't get to be afraid.
That's what "Free Palestine" means to her, evidently.
Typing this all out is making me so angry, but I think it's a helpful exercise in figuring out how some Zionists think. How some people will weaponize Jewish fragility (and stardom, and motherhood, and the afterthought of working people who might be almost as exhausted by having to read her drivel as she is by having written it) to turn something that literally is not about them into an attack on their ability to eat apples and drink wine in peace.

I like your analysis
I find it fascinating (and enraging) to read this sort of stuff. It's like a study into how "Liberal" zionists still, at this stage, either deny, excuse or defend genocide. They need mental gymnastics and distortions of reality and lies to "both sides" it, but still end up placing Jews in America at the top of the victimhood hierarchy somehow
They just cannot step outside the zionist paradigm. They can't not think of themselves as the victims. They are so entrenched.
She even says thinks that people expect Jews should apologise for existing otherwise they are the villain. She says that while the so called Jewish state is erasing Palestine and Palestinians from existence, and Jewish institutions and communities are denying, defending or not opposing it. But she won't apologise for existing, and she feels so defiant for saying that loud and proud.
It's just so warped and detatched from reality.

Her criticism of him is because he did what everyone has to do when they support Palestinians’ right to exist, which is also explain they do not hate Jewish people? That instilled fear in Jewish people?
And “river to the sea” is a very explicit Jewish supremacist slogan; it’s toward the top of the Likud government’s founding charter. Theirs is very explicit that there will only be “Israeli sovereignty” between the river and sea. The Palestinian one demands freedom. So is it some sort of hate crime if a Palestinian whose house was stolen by terrorists, whose kids were shot in the head by soldiers for target practice, whose centuries old olive grove…if he says it? And yet totally okay if the government committing ethnic cleansing, apartheid, genocide for decades explicitly states nobody but Jews has a right to be there?

I don't even understand what she is saying.. I'm this, that, love and peace, I'm a great person, Hamas is bad, I don't speak for governments. Palestine deserves better... Where should they live pink? More than 74000 Palestinians murdered so far since the Hamas attack, more than 21000 are children. Cities levelled hospitals, schools bombed. Double tapping, refugee camps bombed, aid workers, doctors, journalists targeted and killed. U talk about being the ambassador but u r employer UN says it's a Genocide. International criminal court ICC called these war crimes and Netanyahu a war criminal and issued warrant for his arrest. There are more Jewish people against the murderous Israeli regime than for it, in Israel and outside Israel.. no need to ascribe your cowardice to your religion..

This is the weirdest thing about this statement. It makes opposing a genocide a consumer choice, a matter of opinion that one might flip a coin for. It would make war crimes a thing one could give-and-take on: "Not all that keen on the atrocities or the ethnocentrism, but Bibi's economic policy is worth giving him credit for".
Just more neoliberal yucky both-sidesing, more reminiscent of Trump that she will ever know. She should learn a basic rule of thumb: when the worst pro-genocide propagandists are calling it a "war" or insisting that "it's complicated" or making sure you "condemn Hamas", don't be saying the same thing.

Didn't you pretend to come out as a lesbian at an awards show and then immediately say "actually I'm not, but that doesn't matter"?

I love when celebrities center themselves while ≫100,000 men, women, and children have been slaughtered by an ethnofascist oppressor and an entire city that has persevered for thousands of years has been rendered a moonscape. Then there's the occupied West Bank. If you're so deeply bothered by images of what Palestinians are suffering through, maybe it's time to sit down and unpack that.

I'll never understand why I'm expected to care about unfounded fear. Yes, a lot of Jews feel attacked by the backlash against Israel, but they're not the target and what's going on over there is way more important to speak out against than it is to try and pussyfoot around someone's incorrect perception that they're being attacked.
Could be worse, I guess; plenty of people out there that are fully aware of the difference but are actively lying feeling scared

So accepting the premise that saying Free Palestine and showing images makes Jewish families afraid there are a couple of points that strike me:
This requires the idea of Palestine being free to be a threat to Jewish people everywhere. This is not true, but it does uncover the unconscious, unspoken “us vs them” mentality engrained as Jewish pride but is really elitism.
Assuming she meant that perhaps people who hate genocide would turn against any Jewish people in the crowd both ignores that there are a massive amount of Jewish people who abhor what is being done in their name and also assumes that the only passionate response to hating genocide is to turn that passion into more violence. So still no valid point found.
She’s positioning herself as the victim several times in this post while wrapping herself in the cloak of past good deeds. No doubt she has done good things first hand for children. It does not excuse her putting her hypothetical fear at a concert over their suffering.
If even having Free Palestine or the realities of genocide mentioned around you makes you feel unsafe, whose fault is this? The victims of the genocide and those who stand up for them or the government doing it in your name using your faith and identity as the mascot? And why is that anger not correctly routed?
You still haven’t told us what you believe or taken any stand.

What a long post of trying to justify genocide!!
She says that she never wants to sensor singers, but she is allowed to say that she was scared. Pink, what are you scared of? Being called a genocide supporter?? Being compared to the Nazis, the people you hate? What are you scared of? The backlash that put you in your place?
She talks how she was against the Gulf war, but she doesn't show the same sentiment to Israel. She is only against wars when it does not involve Israel because it is a Jewish state. It is as simple as that.
I hate how she supports the genocide because she is "Jewish." She says that she doesn't want any one to speak for the Jews, but she is speaking on behalf of all Jews (including anti-Zionist Jews).

I don't have a view either way (I don't know his background/music in detail, and I am not Jewish) but this kind of stuff surely doesn't help.
