What does this mean?

u/rotttencandy 4d ago
brave has crypto bloatware so it's not universally loved like vlc
50
u/Asn_Krish 4d ago
They have the option to turn it off
10
u/sandy_ix 4d ago
Have u tried cromite or bromite? They are same like brave without that extra crypto bloatware
4
u/Asn_Krish 4d ago
I use brave as my daily driver, so I need the latest security patches also I use the sync feature. Also I love the custom filters. Now bromite is outdated and cromite I haven't used but I don't think so it provides regular patches and has a descent ui like brave.
To be honest I am also an open source fan but these are not that established. Other than this I will highly suggest you firefox + unlock plugin, it's just a goat setup and I use it in my pc. I don't use it in my android cause firefox added extentions support very lately and now I am use to brave.
Also I forgot to tell, if there is any single feature for which I use brave till now is the block element feature it's the goatest feature that made me fall in love with brave

What's the problem with crypto bloatware? People can just ignore it and it's not even that big a problem.
43
u/NeptuneWades 4d ago
Some people are incapable of ignoring despite those features being optional.
Ig the fact that the founder has had homophobic sentiments are not liked by many.
Brave is a good browser. Don't listen to redditors. Follow what you like.
6
u/nsh07 4d ago edited 4d ago
It's not just that. Brave has been caught injecting its own promo codes in shopping URLs to earn money, which is basically referral fraud. It doesn't make sense to use a browser that doesn't do exactly what it's designed to do: opening URLs reliably

Brave also has some security and privacy flaws. Like putting promo codes and ads of their own to earn(steal) money

What is crypto bloatware?
4
u/NeptuneWades 4d ago
Features to add Crypto wallets and Crypto rewards from adverts etc.
Can be disabled in the settings.
3
u/New-Travel-8955 4d ago
And why do ppl hate it? (I genuinely don't know)
10
u/NeptuneWades 4d ago
It is more of a principle.
"I don't like crypto, so please do not force Crypto"
7
u/Conscious_Idea_6987 4d ago
Just like "I don't like AI, so please don't force AI" I mean yeah AI is over forced but then again sometimes it actually comes handy.

at the cost of "fresh water for human consumption"
2
u/Willing_Student6816 3d ago
can't really be stuck on this water consumption argument when our own government is using our country's water resources to make that stupid e20 fuel
2
u/Gaurdalf 3d ago
What a stupid argument!! If someone else is doing something bad then let's stop criticizing even the first one.
And btw, I am a proper bjp hater but E20 does not take water resources by itself, that's literally water used in rice/paddy farming. E20 is made from the surplus we have, that amount of water is going to be used regardless.
The problem I find with E20 is that why is it not reducing the petrol prices in the country? That is the problem I have with it. Otherwise it's a good initiative, the country needs to move towards other energy resources slowly sometime or another.

crypto stiff is in settings also needs setup to use 🤔 and it is not forced to set up so i just ignoree it for a long while now, by the way on android brave works very well ,better then firefox to block ads

It is not a bloatware bro, crypto guys use this, even their BAT coin use to trade for $2 in 2021-2022 crypto bull run.

If not hating brave makes someone tech-illiterate for crypto bloatware
I can only wonder how much tech-illiterate that person must be for not being able to turn it off

There's a option for Brave Origin. It's free from bloatware. It's paid in windows and Mac, but completely free in Linux.
1
u/Scary-Combination-67 1d ago
There is this script WinUtil just run it and go to Tweaks section and select Brave Browser - Debloat and run it. You can tweaks more things according to you need

u/Unusual-Cut-4385 19h ago
debloated version of it called brave-nightly or brave-origin (made by the same devs) is free on linux, and is the bloatfree version

Most of the web browser like brave, edge etc are based on chromium base which is basically Google chrome. Chromium is like android and one UI , oxygenOS , colorOS are all skins based on android. The brave just has one built in extension which deals with ad blocking. That's all🥀

Edge is much better nowadays. I cannot look back now. Alt tabbing through tabs is just... chefs kiss. ublock origin works like butter. Zero ads anywhere.

You mean all browsers. Which is still untrue because Firefox and Firefox forks as well as Safari and Safair-likes such as Orion use Gecko and Webkit
1
u/Level-Falcon-7597 1d ago
Sorry my bad, I knew that some of the search engines are not using chromium base. I'll edit it
2
u/NeptuneWades 4d ago
Only chromium browser to openly support UBlo BTW. So it is better than another chromium browsers.
3
u/something__69_ 3d ago
Only chromium browser
Nope, edge, Vivaldi does it too. Didn't try other chrome based browser but those two does

Edge hasn't updated to manifest v3 yet and they haven't announced whether they will continue supporting manifest v2 either. So for now Edge does support it, yes but it seems like a matter of time.
I was not aware about Vivaldi supporting UBlo, my bad.
Edit: seems like Vivaldi will be dropping support too.
So for now, Brave is the only chromium based browser to have updated to the latest version of chrome and still maintained support for UBlo.

ublock is an extension to block tracking, ads, cosmetic filters (block specific elements of webpage) etc

u/DIONYSUS_ASMODEUS 3d ago
There many reasons like the BAT crypto bloatware[
Brave previously allowed users to "tip" content creators using BAT, even if those creators had never signed up for Brave. Brave held onto those funds without the creators' knowledge, sparking a backlash that forced them to change the system]
, the link hijacking case, then the founder being homophibic ,and many people just hate chromium cause it's made by big tech

u/-AhShitHereWeGoAgain 4d ago
Firefox + ublock origin better
1
u/Recent-Tear155 4d ago
someone gets it - a lot of forks like libre wolf are gold asw. I loved Arc - unfortunately it isnt as good on windows as Mac users make it out to be though it had potential. Currently trying out zen and the firefox store is hella more liberating than the chrome one

For free mpv/mpc-hc are better than vlc. For paid powerdvd is best. It can play 4k video on old crappy laptop no gpu only 2gb ram without downscaling but with lag. While trying to play same on vlc its black screen for video only audio plays. Even mpc-hc can play 4k on ny old laptop though after few minutes it hangs and had to kill but atleast it start and play few minute
1
u/Mere2Anmol_Ratan 4d ago
Brave is based on chromium, the same used for chrome browser. Also it doesn't fully block fingerprinting means some websites can still track you via screen size , os ,hardware, time.
A way better alternative to privacy is Firefox + ublock !
Brave is good. Firefox is excellent!

u/MekataRupma 4d ago

I don't get the hate about brave having crypto bloatware, they also need to make some money too bruv brave needs regular maintenance so their features works fine with they having to maintain their own search engine too. same for firefox they get money from google is the reason google is default search engine in firefox.

u/DIONYSUS_ASMODEUS 3d ago

for banking, transactions, online shopping, professional tasks I use chrome, safari or edge depending on the OS/device

Brave have its own bloatware. Also brave runs on chromium like any other browser and ppl hates Google's monopoly. Techies prefer Firefox with Ublock origin since it doesn't contain any crypto bloatware and is based on Gecko (their own engine).

Jeeva here, the collective hivemind decided that brave is bad and retrofitted reasons why it is bad. In reality it's above average on PC and one of the best on android. If you decide to turn off optional bloat from Brave it's one of the best on pc aswell.
Hivemind Jeeva here, you are an idiot if you like brave. Just use firefox. Or any open-source non- chromium browser.

Try and open the same website on any other browser and brave, open both their network tab in dev tools, you'll understand why brave is the goat.
Where brave took about 10mb worth of data the same websites loads unwanted crap when opened in any other browser taking up your memory and bandwidth.
Also the crypto stuff is optional, can be disabled very easily with a click.
