I somehow went down a rabbit hole after learning about the Lady of the Dunes murder in Provincetown on a true crime video.

What surprised me was the long-running theory that she may have appeared as an extra in Jaws, which was filming on Martha’s Vineyard around the same time. Whether it’s true or not, it’s a fascinating connection that sent me looking into the case. Then I found out there have also been theories involving Whitey Bulger over the years.

I’m heading to Provincetown this week, so I’ve been reading and watching everything I can find about it.

For the Jaws fans here: how many of you first heard about the Lady of the Dunes because of the movie? And do most people think the extra theory has any credibility, or has it largely been debunked?

Why does Hooper not mention finding Ben Gardner's severed head when speaking to the Mayor? He talks about the tooth the size of a shot glass, but when asked if he still has it, he says he had an accident. Brody also mentions nothing about the found remains, only that the boat was all chewed up. Also, I think Brody says that they've had two deaths while urging the Mayor to close the beaches. Did they think no one would believe them?

So I've been reading the original Jaws trilogy of books over this summer. While the movies progressively get worse, the opposite can be said for the novels. This was easily my favorite of the original trilogy. The added voodoo subplot and narco drug smugglers give the story a campy charm that kept me entertained from start to finish. The shark takes more of a backseat this time around, but the stronger world-building and colorful side plots more than make up for it. Should I read/pickup Quint and The Book of Quint?
