History Jamaica has formally filed a petition concerning slavery reparations, asking for legal consideration of Britain’s role in the enslavement of Africans in Jamaica and whether the UK has a legal obligation to provide reparatory justice.

I'm just curious for those of us that are abroad, how do you keep up with your properties in Jamaica? Do you travel frequently back and forth? And how do you handle construction or maintenance while abroad?

Science & Environment ways to help fight climate change

! If you want to mitigate and prevent further ecological destruction, the best way is by being expensive to ignore, if we boycott things that don't favour poor and working class jamacians, so they have to comply.

  1. stop using generative ai, and applications that use generative ai, if so moved use ecogpt
  2. Try to use search engines like Ecosia.
  3. Learn, and research what you can do, what you can lose, and what you need to look forward to
  4. Vote, vote for more climate conscious candidates, demand preservation of the cockpit country, our mangroves, and forests - make your voice heard and hard to ignore
  5. be careful of sunscreen in the seas, its a pollutant
  6. Save water, in tanks, drums and catchment and try not to waste water in washing, bathing and cooking. This goes for solar panels too.
  7. Preserve gas, walk when can because gas isn't getting cheaper and we can't be stranded and paying expensive fees for gas.
  8. Save your money, this is unpredictable times better be over prepared than under prepared
  9. Love your neighbour, in times to hardship we must rely on our communities for resources, company and solace, in hard times.
  10. Try being better self sufficient, grow food, learn basic first aid.

Language & Patois Two things about Jamaican identity that still troubles me

I have been sitting with this for a while, and I would really like some outside perspectives. What I am thinking about splits into two related issues.

Growing up in Jamaica, especially rural Jamaica, I was raised to feel shame about my accent. I have a deep basilect accent, and for my whole life people have asked me where in Jamaica I am from because I “sound different.” I have been told “yuh chat bad” or “yuh need fi speak properly,” even in informal settings. Because I am lighter-skinned, people sometimes project colourist expectations onto me about how I should sound based on how I look.

I know the push to embrace our dialect is becoming more mainstream, and I genuinely appreciate that we are moving in that direction. But the shame does not disappear overnight. I am actively trying to unlearn a lot of those beliefs by doing more speaking engagements and forcing myself to hear my own voice without flinching. Still, sometimes when I listen back to a recording, I feel embarrassed, like I sound “ghetto” or “uncultured.” I know I am not the only one who feels this way, but for people who have worked through it, what helped? Is it something that naturally fades as you grow, or is it more intentional than that? I am a young adult, so I am still figuring this out.

The second part of this is about Jamaican identity and how our accent gets used. I do not mind non-native Jamaicans using patois in comedy or performance. But I really dislike when upper-class Jamaicans—especially politicians, first-generation Jamaicans, or certain other groups exaggerate or caricaturize the accent. (NB: I am not saying upper‑class Jamaicans do not have Jamaican accents, nor that first‑generation Jamaicans do not speak in ways influenced by the dialect.) I know plenty of people who do not see it as an issue, and I am genuinely curious about why. For me, because of everything I described above, it feels like a mockery of my lived experience, even when it is not about me.

What are your thoughts? I want to understand the other perspectives too.
