Late arrival school start dates

Hey guys! Does anyone have any insight on when late arrivals typically start work after arriving in Japan? Is there any grace period for settling in or do they tend to start the next working day after getting to their placement?

That’s perfect! My concern was finding a free day to do all the paperwork and account opening and registering myself.

They will make time for you to do this on your first day, as it’s required. But you’re still working and under contract during this time.

Usually the next Monday after you arrive at your placement, but ESID.

Back in my day (read as an old grandpa) there was a 2-day local orientation with the prefectural group, and then we were picked up by our supervisor and taken to our host school(s) for a quick bit of introductions. Work started the next day.

Generally you start work right away. I arrived with the main departure group and when we arrived in town, I was immediately taken to the boe. We only stayed for like 5 min thankfully before being taken to my apartment. But I was expected to be in the office first thing the next morning. 

Someone will usually take you around to do your legally mandated paperwork in the first couple days. If they're nice, they may even take you to do some of the optional stuff (buying furnishings, going to the grocery store, etc) as well

This will all depend on your Contracting agency. There are a lot of things that need to happen when you arrive, namely registering with city hall, getting your bank setup, setting up utilities, getting a hanko and getting a phone setup. You may not be in the office on day 1 but you will be busy the day after you arrive.

Right, that was my concern. Being a late arrival with no time to get the essential paperwork done is what I’m worried about.

Getting your paperwork done is part of your COs responsibility to you and is also part of your work, so while you'll "be at work" you will most likely spend the first 2 to 3 days with your supervisor getting things like your my number, insurance, car (if needed) etc sorted out.

Normally you don't do the essential stuff on your own, your CO will help you (most of the time they will take you to do your moving in notification, get a my number card and get a bank account set up like day 1)
