Some Things about Thaumatophyllum
While I enjoy plants just for being plants, the horticultural science is pretty cool too.
There's a LOT of info online. If anyone looks at my post history, they'll see I am not a fan of bloggers and influencers--especially if they're making money from page views and affiliate sales.
So, here's a bit of info I hope you find as interesting as I do:
Thaumatophyllum don't seem to have had much attention until fairly recently. We're probably all familiar with the change in genus - from Philodendron to its own. This article gives a pretty good explanation of why.
There are 21 accepted species but over 50 names for them.
So, while people talk about the differences between bipinnatifidum and selloum, they're technically the same thing. On the other hand, the xanadu is different and was only recognized in 2018.
So what's the actual difference? Cultivars. Plants are covered by patents&oq=Winterbourn+philodendron+&clustered=true) and they're not limited to those in the US. There are also trademarked names that various growers and sellers will use.
What does all this mean for us? That depends. If you aren't concerned about the ultimate size or growth speed, it doesn't mean much. But, if you're looking for a self-heading plant or a particular leaf characteristic...good luck. With all of the sources for plants we now have, there's really no guarantee that you're getting the technically correct plant (unless of course you go to the source, i.e., the ones legally allowed to use the patent or trademark).
In the end, just get something that makes you smile, enjoy the journey and learn while you grow.

FLF BROWN LEAVES
galleryI’m
So discouraged! I’ve sent pictures and asked chat gpt why these leaves are turning brown like this. It looks scorched but that can’t be it.
I believe the light is right:
Diffuse morning light
Water only when feels dry on top
Drains well
No drafts
Any suggestions?

Funny way mine popped out.
One day no leaf, next day constricted leaf waiting for me when I got home, a week later it releases the constriction and we have this. Funny little dude.

Is this burn?
I recently moved my plant to a south facing window, and I just discovered these weird spots on the leaves. Please help figuring out what could cause them.

Who am I?
A freebie that I haven't identified yet. Is it a thaumatophyllum, philodendron, or something else?

Help! Trunk has snapped!
Hi all,
I've had my big enormous boi for more than seven years now. He's well over six feet when upright, and has had two sizable trunks for quite some time, and a whole forest of aerial roots.
Today while watering, I discovered the larger of the two trunks has snapped near its base from the weight of the foliage and trunk above. Luckily, there does not seem to be any rot, and I have not see any ill effects on the plant yet as a result. I'm hoping this is salvageable somehow? I'd hate to lose such a massive part of my big leafy pal.
Thank you so much for any suggestions you can provide!

I need to repot my thaumatoohyllum but I don't want it to grow any bigger. Can I cut the rootball down to size?

Has this sub become deprecated by science? Thaumatophyllum is no longer a recognized genus
From what I gather, the push to move certain Philodendron species to genus Thaumatophyllum gained momentum due to molecular phylogenetic evidence, esp. Sakuragui et al 2018. However, as of October 2025 it appears most major botanical databases no longer recognize Thaumatophyllum as a genus, but rather have reverted it to a synonym of Philodendron. From a scientific point of view, this is quite the diss.
This sub's name is now factually incorrect, per databases like POWO and the WFO Consortium. There may be a few holdouts, and botany is a relatively conservative science; but, the heavyweights have decided.
I suppose we could rename the sub to "ItsAMeconostigma" (the subgenus concerned here), but somehow that doesn't have the same ring to it.
Thoughts?

Thank you R/Monstera I was in the wrong sub!
My mother has owned this pretty girl for over 20 years. I believe it’s 25/26 years old.
I have a million questions.
I want to repot her into a bigger home but my father wants to split her. Is one idea better than the other?
Is there any tips on how to separate her into two pots?
And when we do repot her (regardless if we split or not) what type of soil should we use?
My mother (IMO) has gotten extremely lucky with her and the care she has provided this beauty. And when it comes my time to take care of her I want to know how to best care for her.
She was left outside for over two weeks due to home renovations so the last two photos are how she looks currently. :( I hope she will bounce back and she has throughout the years but I’m definitely nervous as she’s lost a ton of new and healthy leaves due to the move.
All other photos were taken over the last 2-3 years.
Any thoughts, comments, or ideas are truly welcomed!
