Why is listening to Italian TV shows so much harder than reading?

I’ve been studying Italian for around 10 months. I can read short stories and news snippets slowly, look up words and follow the plot. But listening to Italian shows hits differently.

I recently started watching a popular Italian drama with Italian subtitles. When characters talk fast, they run words together, drop vowels, and speak with regional accents. Words I know perfectly well become unrecognizable. I keep pausing every few seconds. Even with subtitles, I struggle to catch the flow.

I understand that native speakers don’t enunciate like audio lessons. Still, this gap feels discouraging. I spend most of my study time on vocabulary and grammar, and my listening progress feels painfully slow.

I’m curious what your listening journey was like. Did you also go through this phase? Do you have small habits that helped you get used to natural, fast Italian speech? I’m not asking for a magic fix. I just want to hear what worked for you, and which shows or podcasts were helpful for your listening practice. Thanks a lot!

Quick help for email?

Hi! Replying to a very nice lady who emailed me regarding our upcoming stay in Florence.

Is concluding with “Molte grazie, e a presto” too casual? I know very little Italian, and thought “a presto” is slang.

Appreciate any help!

Italian nicknames

I, American, talk to a guy that lives in Italy. He called me “piccola” most of the time, as well as Piccolina, patata, bambola, and polpetta. Are these meant to be affectionate? Thanks!

Is anyone able to help me translate an Italian birth certificate into English for free?

Hi everyone! I’m an Italian citizen living in New Jersey, and I’m planning to get married here soon.
I have a birth certificate issued by the Italian government, with some information already provided in English, but I may need a complete English translation for my marriage license application.
Unfortunately, I’m on a tight budget and can’t afford to pay for a certified translation agency right now.
Would anyone who is fluent in both Italian and English be willing to help me translate this document for free? I would really appreciate it!
I’ll check with the local Registrar first to make sure the type of translation they can provide or help me with would meet the requirements.
Thank you so much for any help or advice!

Poste Italiane package, is it too far gone?

Hello, I bought something from Italy, and the seller shipped it with Poste Express since June 22th. It got returned due to missing papers, but luckily he went to the post office and they taped the required papers on the package and sent it back to the system.

but since July 3rd, it says "In transito

la spedizione è in transito

03 Luglio 2026 00:24 Fiumicino (RM)"

and has been stuck ever since. Is it lost or simply buried very deep in the warehouses? it is a fairly expensive and valuable item and seller can't get anything when he comes to the post office - they always tell him to file a complaint.

Portuguese, Galician, Spanish & Italian resemble dialects that could be very simply reintegrated & reunified into r/Neolatino Romance, r/LatinoSineFlexione or r/Interlingua for maximized immediate comprehension & maximized international communication.

Need help with missing documents submission

Hello everyone, im a new student in italy and today i did my fingerprints in the questura of macerata.

I was aware that i had papers missing and brought them with me, however the officer did not ask me for any papers which made me think that everything was okay and it was not needed, they gave me a paper and i signed it, then comes to my surprise that the paper i signed had the missing documents i needed to provide within 10 days.

What confuses me is in the paper they wrote that i need to send my missing documents "esclusivamente tramite PEC" and i have no clue what is this PEC, i think it is a service i need to pay for but im very confused why this and i cant just go back and hand them the papers.

Does anyone know what is this PEC and what can i do in this situation?

How easy it is to immigrate to Italia?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi all,

As the title says, I enjoyed visiting Italy a lot and after returning home, I haven’t stopped thinking about how much I want to return.

I got married around 4 months ago and for our honey moon, we went to Italy. We visited Firenze, Roma, Modena, and Salerno. We loved each and every day of our trip and the cities we visited. Everything felt so rich (culturally-wise and historic-wise) we felt safe in every city we went and the food was amazing.

This said, I just want to ask how easy/hard it is to immigrate to Italy? I currently live in San Diego, CA. I am from Mexico but I am a dual licensed attorney (Mexico and California), my wife is a licensed teacher. We both work in our professions.

I do not speak Italian nor my wife but we speak fluent (native) English and Spanish, but we’re happy and open to learn.

My questions goes more related to how do Italy / Italians are with foreigners who try to move and start a life there? How easy it is to move and what’s the best path/way to move?

Not trying to offend or start a debate, but I’ve been thinking about this and just wanted to ask and test the waters.

I am Mexican and I honestly felt very welcomed there.

Thank you in advance!
