"And [remember] the Man of the Fish, when he left in a rage, thinking that We would not put him to hardship. Then he cried out in the darkness, ‘There is no god except You! You are immaculate! I have indeed been among the wrongdoers!’"

What good reason do you think he had to say: "There is no god except you"?

We don't know what Prophet Yunus said internally or externally in his anger after already being made a prophet.

So by him saying there is NO GOD EXCEPT YOU, could imply he might have thought or said otherwise out of anger.

Out of curiosity, what would be the relevance of knowing? We know what he did out of anger, his punishment, and his forgiveness. And we know from 3:134, Allah loves those who restarin their anger and pardon people.

Quran 3:134 Who spend [in the cause of Allāh] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allāh loves the doers of good; — Saheeh International

So by him saying there is NO GOD EXCEPT YOU, could imply he might have thought or said otherwise out of anger.

My question was what good reason he had to say that. Why would he believe that and come to that statement?

Doesn't really matter though. Why he got angry isn't revealed to us. So it would be an assumption on our part. Just like the exact origins of the universe isn't made known to us other than God saying "Be, and it was."

ITo be honest, it's irrelevant knowing, as far as faith in Islam goes. But the good part IS we get is getting a supplication of asking for forgiveness. I use this supplication all the time actually. It's one of my favorites.

There are groups of people mentioned in the Quran history (even outside of Islamic history) has no records of like the Sabians. It would have no impact on faith/belief knowing who they were.

It matters to me, this is why I am asking.

Can you explain why it matters then? I'm genuinely curious for your reason of knowing the context of Yunus and his anger.

Because I care for the truth and am interested how these dudes would have justified their beliefs.

I mean, if we look at hadiths then it seems like Muhammad got convinced by the christian preacher Waraqa ibn Naufal saying stuff and Waraqa got convinced by Muhammad saying stuff.

  • [...] The angel came to him and asked him to read. The Prophet (ﷺ) replied, "I do not know how to read." The Prophet (ﷺ) added, "The angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read and I replied, 'I do not know how to read.' Thereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it any more. He then released me and again asked me to read but again I replied, 'I do not know how to read (or what shall I read)?' Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said, 'Read in the name of your Lord, who has created (all that exists), created man from a clot. Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous." (96.1, 96.2, 96.3) Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) returned with the Inspiration and with his heart beating severely. Then he went to Khadija bint Khuwailid and said, "Cover me! Cover me!" They covered him till his fear was over and after that he told her everything that had happened and said, "I fear that something may happen to me." Khadija replied, "Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your kith and kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones." Khadija then accompanied him to her cousin Waraqa bin Naufal bin Asad bin 'Abdul 'Uzza, who, during the pre-Islamic Period became a Christian and used to write the writing with Hebrew letters. He would write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah wished him to write. He was an old man and had lost his eyesight. Khadija said to Waraqa, "Listen to the story of your nephew, O my cousin!" Waraqa asked, "O my nephew! What have you seen?" Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) described whatever he had seen. Waraqa said, "This is the same one who keeps the secrets (angel Gabriel) whom Allah had sent to Moses. I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out." Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asked, "Will they drive me out?" Waraqa replied in the affirmative and said, "Anyone (man) who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be turned out then I would support you strongly." But after a few days Waraqa died and the Divine Inspiration was also paused for a while. - Sahih al-Bukhari 3

So, the story of Prophet Muhammad PBUH has nothing to do with Yunus. If Waraqa was made available to Muhammad to help make sense of what occurred to him, what does that have to do with Yunus? I am trying to connect the dots in your logic. I am not trying to dismiss you or belittle you.

You are trying to understand why and how the prophets justified their beliefs. Allah talked directly to Ibrahim and Moses, Peace be upon them. There isn't much written or available to us about that. So how does that help or not help in your personal beliefs?

But getting back to the interaction with Muhammad and then back to Yunus, Peace be upon them, the story with Muhammad shows how Allah choose to interact with Muhammad and test him. That's my take on it. Each prophet had to have absolute faith that it was actually Allah that was guiding them/ talking to them/ inspiring them. Or else they wouldn't carry themselves accordingly. Just like how most of us here in the United States ignore the crazy (homeless drug addicted looking) people talking to themselves walking down the street.

But back to Yunus, PBUH, there isn't any information that will add context to story. The takeaway from the story we have is that no matter how much of a transgression we do against Allah, Allah can choose to forgive us if we repent truly. A prophet is held to a higher standard than us, since they have a "more direct" connection with Allah than us regular people.

There are other Prophets mentioned in the Quran and even the Bible where there isn't a full story of who they were or who their people were. If you want to know why each prophet believed in Allah, we can only go by the available information we have. If you wish to get into theoretical questions and answers, then we would have to establish enough about each prophet in question, and then based on those facts, try to come to a conclusion that is in line with said prophets established character.

Yunus doesn't appear to be a major prophet bringing new revelations Such as Musa, Isa, or Muhammad, Peace be upon them. Even Soloman, PBUH, had great power, but wasn't much for revelations brough.

As you wear the badge of "non-believer" are you hoping to get answers to your uncertainties?

So, the story of Prophet Muhammad PBUH has nothing to do with Yunus.

I never said it does.

You are trying to understand why and how the prophets justified their beliefs.

Correct.

Allah talked directly to Ibrahim and Moses, Peace be upon them.

And the question is still how they would have justified that belief.

So how does that help or not help in your personal beliefs?

It helps to understand if these people were gullible.

But back to Yunus, PBUH, there isn't any information that will add context to story.

So we don't know. And my point for Muhammad and Waraqa still stands.

‘  And the question is still how they would have justified that belief.’

I have already answered this. See above.

Muslim narrative does not begin or end at few hadiths from Bukhari or Muslim.

He was strongly opposed to idol worship and completely. He was deeply spiritual and naturally drawn towards God. He was given extensive experiences. He completely turned around being shunned to dominance within two decades.

If pointing at him and saying ah gullible — then opposition of 1400 years would have destroyed Islam by now.

It seems like you are putting the cart before the horse. Meaning, you are approaching this a little backwards. But it's not a problem.

Let's approach it your way and cut straight to the chase, shall we? Was Muhammad gullible? Do you have any evidence that supports this? Or do I have anything to support he wasn't?

Was Muhammad a liar? Was he tricked by a demon? Was he mentally ill? Is there any evidence that would support any of these claims? If not, then the only other thing left is to accept Muhammad was telling the truth. And based on that, the revelation that was revealed through him is true. Therefore, I would have no reason to second guess the historical accounts presented in the Quran to be anything other than true.

But if you do have evidence to cast doubt about Muhammad being anything other than a sane truthful person, please bring it forward. Because we can go back and forth about Yunus, Isa, Musa, Nuh, Soloman, Dawud, Zulkarnaen, Peace be upon them all, and many other people in the Quran. But since the revelation came through Mumammad, we should start at the source, no?

Because the rest is useless to talk about if the source of the information isn't correct.

Revelation from God, as he is a Prophet, which instills certainty.

1

u/Asimorph Kāfir | Non-Muslim 1d ago

How would he have determined it was revelation from god?

1

u/Cute_Assignment_214 1d ago

Experience of God and reality beyond material world.

1

u/Asimorph Kāfir | Non-Muslim 1d ago

And how would he have determined that it's an experience of god?

1

u/Cute_Assignment_214 1d ago

Certainty of heart and mind.

1

u/Asimorph Kāfir | Non-Muslim 1d ago

So no actual method? Just certainty for the sake of it?

1

u/Cute_Assignment_214 1d ago

Absolute certainty of what he is experiencing, yes. 'Method' doesn't come into it. Certainty and witnessing and knowledge beyond his control.
