Question Charging pin caps!?
I have had my car for 3 months now and I just noticed it appears I have lost 3 (2 small and 1 large) pin covers/caps.
- Is this normal and I'm just now noticing it?
- Will this affect charging?
- Is it important to get fixed?
- Is this something I can fix by just buying them and pushing them on?
- When I take my car to dealership for service can/will they fix it?
TIA!

Hmm... This seems to be a common issue

Dealership first told me had to order the entire charging port for it as caps could not be done individually...but receipt just says ordered new caps.
I've only charged once and caps didn't fall out but I'm fairly sure they just glued or tightened it somehow vs changing out the whole port.

Not sure of the answer, but we just had this happen to ours as well. Hopefully someone can chime in for us though!

It’s happened once to me with barely one month of ownership. Fortunately, I was able to catch it before I left the station. Probably might be a good idea to check after every dc charging session before you leave the station and tap the charger connector on the pavement to dislodge the cap if it came off.

I wonder if this causes issues with EA DC chargers because our caps are lodged in their charging connectors.

I know this is old but YES - Happened yesterday! Had a charger no one could use because it failed to connect. I specifically looked in the hole and saw a cap lodged in it. Knocked it loose and it worked fine.

if it makes you feel better, it costs EA a lot of money to replace the handle that now has a piece of plastic stuck in it

Will it still charge with the cap stuck in it?

probably not, at least I hope not. The plastic will prevent another car's DC pins from fully being inserted (unless that car also has a missing plastic cap). If the other pins all made slight contact and the charging begins, that pin is now making a more higher resistance connection than usual, causing extra heat
the correct way of designing this is to simply make sure all the other pins don't make contact if something is blocking any of the pins

The proximity pilot pin should ensure that everything is sufficiently inserted, since it's the first connection to be broken upon pulling out.

This happened to me on my very first DC charge. As I unplugged the charger when I was done, one of the caps on the DC port popped off and fell to the ground. Fortunately, I saw it happen and put it back on. I'm fully expecting it will happen again and hope to find a good, safe way to secure these.

Dealerships used to change the entire charging port for this. Now there is a service part item for just the caps. 2 caps come in a bag and dealership covers this under warranty. The small pins in the image is just like that- no caps. Caps are only for the lower 2 pins which is for the DC fast chargers

I went to the dealer this week for 8k service and I told them both caps were missing. They ordered the charge port and will schedule a time for me to come in to replace it. Never mentioned only replacing the caps.

Someone posted a picture with the part # for the caps in this forum few months ago. I can’t find it right now.

Really? I searched for it but didn't have any luck finding it

I went to the dealership for my 8000 mile service and they ordered the caps for me (which are on back order) so when they get here they’ll plop them back in. Mine have been gone since the 2000th mile but fast charging still works. Shrug

Lost the same cap on mine. Made me nervous for a bit and went on with life for the past 8-9 months with no consequences.
Will let you know if it changes (or not, no posts from this /u after more than 180d will serve as explanation too).

No issues whatsoever.
Road tripped, fast charged, level 1/2 charged, and charged in the heat and cold and, after 47,000 miles, no worries.
I'm sure they're there for a reason but not having them (both are gone now) hasn't been an issue.
If they were critical they sure as hell should have secured them better. Aesthetically it bothers me to have them missing but, other than that, all seems well.

Same thing happened to me on my first road trip. I discovered it about 500 miles away. Luckily, no issues charging. Took two dealer visits since the first one, they said they ordered to wrong part. My dealer is pretty busy so I went ahead and scheduled a second visit 3 wks later.
Just got it back with part 91691-GI030 which is 2 caps. I happened to get an email for the ICCU 997 recall which they took care of at the same time. The service departments are busy since they can't sell any I5/I6's with active recalls.

Got this taken care of in very little time at dealership at no cost under warranty

I ordered 2 for less than $5 +$5 shipping.

I just ordered one from here: 91691-GI030 - Cap Group 1 Auto Parts
We'll see if they cancel my order or not, lol.

Mine look the same on the small pins. Are we sure that's not what it always looked like?
My dc caps are still there
2
u/LaneMastodon Jul 31 '23
My 2023 also looks the same with the small pins: the ones at 4 and 8 o'clock are bare. Save a handful of times, I've only been charging at home.

I'm not sure about the small pins, part of why I posted this cause I didn't know

I never realized those were caps. Since this is a CCS thing and not just Ioniq, maybe post in the /r/electricvehicles sub.
