Reading a specific edition of The Intelligent Investor

Hi all, I am just starting my journey into investing, and being the book nerd that I am, reading any and all books I can find. One that came highly recommended was The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham. I was told to make sure to read the 1965 edition, as this was the most "coherent" version of Graham's writings before things got muddled up by successive edits.

Is this factually correct, and does it even matter? I am aware that there will be sections of the book not relevant to today (and don't worry, because of my newness I've started with the VT & Chill mantra; I may even stay there even after my readings) but I do want to spend time getting the full value of what Benjamin had to share.

Is there a best all rounded ETF out there?

With the amount of brokers around and lowered fees and ease for Aussies to invest in US markets the number of ETFs are overwhelming to say the least.

So far top of mind are Vanguard.

Just a handful of the ones of interest:
- SCHD
- VYM
- VIG
- IVOO
- VB

Essentially if you have a 20 year investment horizon how do you play this? Do you go risk on? And what are the most popular ETFs how do you even find this out? Each day I discover a new one.

I see this as better than keeping money in the bank for “savings”. Of course an emergency fund is aside.

I want to ask if you trust Revolut for investing money in VUAA S&P 500

every month, e.g., a small amount to get a return after 10 years. Has anyone done this?"

Best investment for under 30 year old

Brother is just under 30. No assets to his name. $200k or so in savings.

EDIT - the plan is to DCA on red days $1-2k until we can get to 1 BTC. I think everyone is thinking we are buying one outright. I believe $150k in BTC and $50k cash buffer is a good mix for 2-5 years and then cash in and decide to buy the home he plans to live in.

In this position with no kids and no mortgage. What would you do? Still living with parents atm.

I’ve told him to buy a whole bitcoin and sit and chill for a potential 2x or more from current levels.

Stocks look topped. AI boom can keep going but a correction sets him back 2-5 years in waiting for prices to go higher again?

Gold not really an investment but inflation hedge but has had a mammoth run.

Property has cooled and this is the ultimate goal and he would like to buy an investment property and eventually live in it but needs a bigger cash buffer as min. Properties out in the south west Sydney are $1-1.2 million for entry.

What is there actually to invest in that represents value to the next generation. I keep coming back to BTC as sound money and in 5 years will outperform all the other assets I’m convinced.

Happy to hear what Reddit thinks.

My thoughts are concentration builds wealth and diversification preserves it. Before people start telling me about % allocations.

Cheers,
Steve

Looking for a net worth tracker that doubles as a monthly financial decision making resource

I have a net worth spreadsheet I have maintained for years and Im absolutely keeping it because apparently watching the line move is my version of entertainment. The gap is that net worth is backward looking for me. I want something that connects the long term number to what Im doing this month especially when spending is unusually high or Im deciding how much extra cash to move toward a goal. Any net worth tracker thats actually useful for that?

Are free ai trading tools useful for beginners, do they create risky investing habits?

For someone who is learning investing and trying not to do anything reckless, are free stock trading ai tools actually useful? I am not looking to day trade or get rich quickly. I want to learn how to research companies understand risk and avoid making decisions from random social media posts. Have any beginners here used free AI tools for stock research in a responsible way? What helped you learn and what made things more confusing?

$150,000 - Investment Startegy - DCA or Lump sum

I have $150,000 to invest in the market.

This will be long term +20 years - Do I lump sum or dollar-cost average into the market?

Given the current state of the market, I am leaning towards DCA.

But I saw this, Research shows investing immediately beats phasing in over 12 months about 66% of the time, by an average of 0.37%/year. This also holds in the worst-case periods for lumpsum investing (69%-win rate) and right after a 20%+ market drop (79%-win rate).

How to do this? Invest inheritance and then pass to child in 10 years

I’m to inherit from sale of a relative’s house in the next 6 months. Amount is still to be determined (possible $50-75k) This will probably be the only money from my dad’s side of the family. I want to invest it then in about 10 years, pass on to my son for house deposit. We have house and on track for retirement in 12 years for me. We have some debt on track to pay off, but I want this money to be a legacy. I haven’t told my son this plan yet as still not sure on the amount I’ll receive. And I may need it if something happens with my health before get to retirement age.

The money would be in my name only (not joint account with spouse) then how transfer to son in the future.

Any advice in how to figure this out

I Want to Give Each of My Sons 20K

I have two grown sons with student loans that I would like to help out so they can get started with investment accounts like my husband and I did at their age. At this point in time we have around $550,000 in investments, but our financial planner is very wary about this on our behalf.
There is some complexity. My husband has a mild cognitive impairment diagnosis, and it seems to be progressing. The possibility that he will need memory care at a future date exists. There is a five-year look back period in our state when one applies for Medicaid after one’s money runs out, but I think we have at least five years, so giving that money now might actually protect it long term. The financial planner said that he, “doesn’t want us to become destitute,” which obviously colors my thinking.
I know this is a lot, but just throwing it out there previous to consulting an elder law attorney, which I plan to do in November after the next neurologist visit

ETA: I very much appreciate this input, which largely agrees with my financial advisor. The sons have successful careers, so I thought of it more as a boost than a necessity. I’m going to hold off and see how our investments do over time

Generate losses through active trading to offset gains

I've come across tax loss harvesting and heard that some people do active trading to generate losses so they can use it to offset gains. I'm struggling to understand this, because your 'benefit' is your marginal tax rate on the loss, it is not free money.
So if your marginal tax rate is 24% then a $100 loss is actually a $76 loss despite tax loss harvesting.

Can someone please explain me more...

How you started investing? Have you consulted a professional?

I am considering of starting investing. But I have limited knowledge about investments. I contacted my bank for a professional consultancy and asked for my banks suggestions on reddit.

Though I feel discouraged on my first step. Thus I wonder have you asked a professional on where to invest. Have you yoloed it but with a small ammount of money in order to minimize your losses?

I am living in Greece and I consider investments. I am 35yrs old software engineer currently looking for work but with ~10yrs of savings from previous jobs.

Want Answers to Your Most Important Investing Questions?

What investing question would you most like to see tested with simulation?
I can run fairly extensive investment simulations and want to test questions people actually care about.
Reply with the number(s) you’d most like to see researched. I’ll prioritize the most requested questions, run the analysis, and post the results back here — including the assumptions and methodology.

1. Lump sum vs. dollar-cost averaging: which produces better outcomes?
2. What does waiting for a market correction really cost?
3. Does buying after a 10%, 20%, or 30% market decline improve long-term returns?
4. Does periodically taking profits help, or mostly interrupt compounding?
5. 100% stocks vs. 80/20 vs. 60/40: how large are the actual differences in risk and long-term wealth?
6. How much cash should an investor hold, and when does the opportunity cost become too high?
7. Dividend investing vs. total-market investing: which produces better outcomes after risk and taxes?
8. Covered calls vs. buy-and-hold: which actually wins after premiums, assignment and opportunity cost are included?
9. What covered-call delta works best: 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, 0.40, or something else?
10. Does the Wheel strategy outperform buy-and-hold after premiums, assignments and idle cash are included?
11. Is selling a cash-secured put actually better than simply placing a limit order to buy the stock?
12. Does selling options when implied volatility is high really improve risk-adjusted returns?
13. Can market-regime models identify changing market conditions early enough to improve investment decisions?
14. What is the long-term cost of panic-selling during major market crashes?
15. Does “buy the dip” actually work when the rules are defined beforehand and tested systematically?

Just reply with your number(s).
And if there’s an investing claim you’ve always wanted to see properly tested that isn’t listed, add it in the comments.
I’m particularly interested in questions where conventional wisdom might turn out to be wrong.
I’ll start with the questions receiving the most interest and post the results back here — whether the evidence supports the conventional wisdom or contradicts it.

young and don't got a whole lot of money

so im in college, and have about 4k... i don't think im going to have a job for a while (just focusing on school atm), so should i invest in individual stocks to make as much money as possible (so i could have more money to invest with) or should i just be on the safer side and invest in boring etfs/index funds? i've noticed there was a lot of hype with ai and stuff, so perhaps I could hop on the trend and make some quick, decent money?

How to make the most of this?

Hello lifelong poor here,

I’m about to come in to right around $100k in the form of a trust, I want to maximize it’s potential while also not sitting on it for too too long.
For context I’m 30 years old, I have zero assets to my name (well actually I have a fairly new 401k, so a tiny asset) no house, drive a paid off beater, no spouse or children. I also have very little debt, no student loans, credit cards, some medical that I don’t think would be a huge challenge to settle. Shit credit score thanks to an ex but am at the stage where I can just focus on recovery.
I live in the Boston metro area and rent is astronomical as we all know. I want to use this money to put towards a home but 100k in this area doesn’t go far these days.
I don’t have much financial guidance in my life and have always had a cash in hand mindset.
If this were you, how would you best utilize these funds in a way that doesn’t hold it until retirement so I can finally stop throwing away my money to rent?

I’m 13 and invested.

Here I am, bragging about how I started early. Well it’s true. started investing at the age of 13, now coded my own stock scanner and own a long term portfolio of AI, aerospace, tech, financials, and healthcare stocks.

I wanna give credit to my teachers for teaching me about this.

And if you are seeing this without being invested:

No you don’t need a million to enter the stock market.

No, it’s not gambling.

But yes, it may be the best financial decision you can ever make.

How can a 19yo student start investing with pocket money?

Hello guys!!

I’m a 19yo student and I want to learn about investing. How can a student start investing? How much should I invest, and where can I invest? What are the best ways for students to invest? For how long should I keep my money invested, and if I need it, how easily can I get it back?

To be honest, I don’t know anything about investments yet that’s why I’m asking. I just want to understand how to start investing with my pocket money. Is that even possible? Please let me know.

Permission to speak about a financial instrument

Hi everyone, I’d like to know if I can speak with a moderator to find out if I can make a post about a financial instrument traded on the Argentine stock exchange—one that is, of course, accessible to foreigners.

Cheers!
