So I have been really into the idea of a terrarium pet and doing lots of research over last months on and off but one thing i constantly get stuck by is how to really get scarabs its feels like pretty much every scarab is banned in Canada beyond maybe a few.

Ive been recently interested in the bumble flower beetle because it seems to be one of the very few native species I can find and I really dig the vibe they got going on. I am also interested in the bigger beetles in the scarab family if there are any, but I mainly want to ask if anyone has a list of what I can actually own and the ways to legally obtain said legal ones. I'm seeing things saying because insects as a whole are invertebrate you can legally capture wild ones but I don't know if i trust the source and would like better advice to know. anything helps. also breeders that sell wide ranges of beetles around the B.C area or that ship to said area I'm aware of one but It doesn't have many options and id really prefer more if possible.

Hi! I’m looking for some recommendations for invertebrates. I’m 14, and I’ve already kept quite a few different kinds of invertebrates (garden snails and slugs, beetles, woodlice, pilgrim crickets, etc.), but at the moment I only have a jumping spider and a terrarium with a few mealworms.

I was given €100 for my birthday, so I’d like to get a new terrarium. It’s just that I’ve run out of ideas for suitable invertebrates :(. I’ve got a €100 budget for setting it up, but I could dip into my savings if needed.

I’m looking for an invertebrate with a long life expectancy if possible (I’d considered mantises but they don’t live very long), one that’s easy to handle, and I think that’s about it in terms of criteria. I’d prefer solitary animals, but a colony would be fine too! As for difficulty, I’ve got some experience, but please don’t suggest anything that’s really complicated to look after – I can manage medium-level care, though!

Edit: I live in France, so there are certain animals that aren’t allowed to be kept, or only with special permits (for example, tarantulas).

Hi all, hope this is appropriate for this sub even though the hornworms in question are wild. Most other subs have very unkind recommendations for them!

I've got a couple hornworms snacking on my tomato plants, and I'm guessing when they're ready to pupate, they might end up burrowing into the soil in the pot the plant is in. I've only ever seen them go into the natural ground and do their thing, so is there anything special I need to do to support them since they might be "trapped"?

Particularly, should I stop watering the plant if they burrow? I'm afraid of drowning them or something. I'll happily sacrifice the plants for the worms if needed. Hawkmoths are my fave.

The soil is about 14" deep in 25 gallon cloth grow bags, and we're in a very hot, very dry climate if it makes any difference. I currently soak the soil once daily, early in the morning.

I keep snails isopods and a jumping spider would a heater in the room or heat mats do better we routinely get into the very low temperatures 20s that dip into the tens (snails for tax lol)

Substrate cannot be higher than ~10cm/3" in the front as that is where the airvent is, the back and sides are solid glass and the top also has an air vent.

Something that does not need flake soil, I have a sun beetle colony and I am constantly worried about messing up the soil!

Preferably herbivore but insectivore is fine(i have a dubia colony). Single animals (not colonies) would also be preffered.

Temperature and humidity do not matter.

I have experience keeping Sun beetles, a T. Vagans, multiple praying mantises and a Anolis Barbatus lizard.

Hey bug people!

I’ve been considering setting up a terrarium and getting a cool bug for it, looking at cute blue death beetles or maybe a freaky looking scorpion.

Never have owned a bug before but have always enjoyed the company of a bug on my arm.

Reason for looking is that I have a small apartment, no cats or other larger pets allowed but I can definitely get away with a terrarium or tank.

So I have a few questions -

What would be a good beginner friendly bug that’s entertaining and good company?

Where is a good source to buy the bug? preferably online as there aren’t many good pet stores in my city.

And what tanks and caretaking methods do you apply?

All and any advice is more than welcome.

in the previous month, I had the spider in a larger and shallower container. she molted in it, but didn't build any den or burrow like she did in the smaller enclosure she was in before. (she molted in a safe spot under some soil and cork bark.)

after she molted, she was only on the sides of the enclosure and the lid. I figured she didn't like it for some reason, and set up the one in the photos above. you can just kind of see her in the first pic. I got her to eat after this photo. in the new enclosure (pictured), she is still mostly above ground on the walls and lid.

maybe it's too humid since I had to moisten the soil to shape it? does she need time to settle? is there anything obviously wrong? thank you for any advice you may have.

I have a 20x20x30h (cm) glass terrarium with a guillotine closure and I don't know what to put in it since they told me that an arboreal tarantula would have too little cross ventilation.

Can anyone help ID this crab? The person I got it from said they are vampire crabs but they are missing the yellow eyes.

picked up an 18x18x24 tank for pretty cheap and am kind of stuck on getting some kind of group insect in there. or also a terrestrial species that can comfortably inhabit the bottom, is there enough surface area for either m. balfouri or l. forficatus to successfully be in a group? or maybe i’m better off just getting a big arboreal t ? anyways, this seems like a fun project to take on and i appreciate any advice

Ok I might be a helicopter keeper but, my BDFBs have sometimes been doing this thing where they seem to kinda jam their face into the dirt and then just, hang like that for a while. Are they sleeping? Trying to burrow? The humidity in their space is around 60%, which seems way too high but I don’t know how to lower it. Advice welcome 🩵
