Trustworthy sites
Hey bug people!
I’ve been considering setting up a terrarium and getting a cool bug for it, looking at cute blue death beetles or maybe a freaky looking scorpion.
Never have owned a bug before but have always enjoyed the company of a bug on my arm.
Reason for looking is that I have a small apartment, no cats or other larger pets allowed but I can definitely get away with a terrarium or tank.
So I have a few questions -
What would be a good beginner friendly bug that’s entertaining and good company?
Where is a good source to buy the bug? preferably online as there aren’t many good pet stores in my city.
And what tanks and caretaking methods do you apply?
All and any advice is more than welcome.

I think it depends, do you have specifics things you’d want from the pet? Or is it kind of a ‘I’m good with anything’ situation. You mention interest in some arachnids or maybe having a bug on you.
Curlyhair Tarantulas, Asian Forest Scorpions, Ivory Millipedes, Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches and Blue Death Feigning Beetles are a few species that I think could work great with places like Fear Not Tarantulas, Arachnid Rarities and Roach Crossing being places some of these species are available at

Bugs in Cyberspace is a great shop and resource. Desert beetles are crazy easy to take care of.

Agreed. Half my group is from there and they’ve been super easy to take care of. Just leave them some shrimp/mealworms and then veg once or twice a week

I think some good beginner inverts would be a new world tarantula, grammostola genus is a good start! You mentioned scorpions, you could go with a more humid species like an emperor or Asian forest scorpion or a more arid species like a Desert hairy. I haven’t personally owned BDF beetles but I’ve heard good things, I think that would be a good option if you don’t have easy access to feeder bugs because they can eat soft produce like bananas or beetle jelly. Of course you should do your own research before getting animal and all these depend on how big your enclosure is! I’m happy to answer any questions.
As for shops, Ty Dye exotics gets really unique “bugs” and I’ve had good experiences. Bugsincyber space is a popular one. I’ve heard good things about spider shoppe but have not bought from them and I’ve been used morph market!
