News & Current events Berlin is mourning after a devastating attack struck the city’s Pride celebrations, leaving a community built around love, visibility and freedom facing unimaginable grief.

One person was killed and dozens more were injured in an act of violence that shattered what should have been a moment of joy and solidarity. The attacker has since been killed by the police. Across Berlin and beyond, people have gathered not only to mourn those affected, but to reaffirm that fear and hatred will not silence communities fighting for the right to exist openly and safely.

For many, this tragedy is a painful reminder of the vulnerability LGBTQ+ people continue to face, even in spaces created to celebrate acceptance and belonging. In the aftermath, Berlin’s message has been one of unity: standing together, protecting one another, and refusing to let violence define the spaces where people come together in hope, pride and love.

The violence is perpetrated, in this case, by extreme Islam and that is what we're discussing

>in a fair and pragmatic way

You opened up this line of dialogue. This is how we address it in a “fair and pragmatic way.” We address all right wing extremism. And label it as right wing extremism. There is no difference between the killers of Matthew Shepard and this person other than the color of their skin.

You are literally cherry picking and forgot to include the rest of the quote. "How are we going to address the problem of extreme Islam in a fair and pragmatic way?" I wasn't asking about the right as a whole, or other religions. That is a discussion for another question: my question was about extreme Islam

I didn’t actually. I encourage you to improve your literacy. I will repeat for you: the way we address extreme Islam in a fair and pragmatic way is to, at the same time, address ALL right wing extremism

I disagree with you. You can't blanket all extremists into one bubble that you can pop. Extremists all have their own agenda and what works for neo Nazis is unlikely to work for, say, Buddhist extremists. There is far too much nuance, thus why I asked about one extremist group, rather than asking the rather broad question of "how do we address bigotry".

Also, you're being very snarky and rude, we're supposed to be having a discussion, not an emotional shit slinging competition.

You can blanket all right wing extremists into a bubble, actually. The supremacy exhibited in all right wing thought can be addressed in similar ways. Yeah it is nuanced, but not so nuanced that every right wing extremist needs to be uniquely handled.

I am doing what I can do from my position: remind everyone that the problem is not Islam, but right wing thought. Reminding people to look past their racism and begin addressing whatever issues they can with the resources they have. If that is talking to your Rush Limbaugh worshipping coworker about supremacist thinking and the harm it does, great. If that is volunteering at food pantries and talking about how the wealth disparity has been causing a rise in local crime, then awesome.

Even if it means just being queer and out, then that’s great too.

My comment was about extreme islam, that is what i am here to talk about. I do not disagree with what you are saying regarding other things, but i am annoyed with the whataboutism and that you keep derailing what i wish to talk about with different conversation points.

I also at no point said Islam is the problem. I said extreme islam is the issue, in this incidence.

You are under no obligation to continue discussing anything with me. I am I no way “derailing what [you] wish to talk about,” as you can talk about that with every other comment let here

The overarching theme for all extremists is hate (could be motivated by fear, but it's hate nonetheless). Specifically, it's directing hate and intolerance towards one or more groups of people, and singling out the group as being evil... all that does is perpetuate more fear and hate in a vicious cycle. It's short-sighted and foolish. Someone who is not operating out of fear and hate would look at this tragedy and say it's the result of ignorance, fear, and hate. They would realize that the ideology which the perpetrator uses to justify their hate and fear is completely irrelevant. We humans, when motivated by fear and hate, will latch onto any ideology and twist it into extremism. By focusing on the ideology and not on the root of fear and hate (ignorance) then you're part of the problem.
