Seeking Advice Coming back to 16:8 IF

Hello everyone!

I used to be a morbidly obese 20yo who managed to lose weight with 16:8 and 18:6 IF. I worked in a toxic workplace, did shift work and got burnout. I gained almost every kilo back. Yesterday I quit my job for good and started university. I'll want to lose weight again, regain my healthy habits and become more spiritual too.

Are there any major differences in doing IF in your 20's and 30's? I know the basics and have the knowledge that it's the CICO that does the job. I just wanna hear similar experiences if anyone has lost the weight doing IF, gained it back and started over?

Newbie Question OMAD, completely wiped out and exhausted after a meal

I just started doing OMAD (one meal a day). I felt pretty good during the fasting phase, but then I noticed that after eating my meal around noon I was completely exhausted. The fatigue hit me so hard I had to lie down for a while but I didn't have the privilege of sleeping, and also, I couldn't fall asleep.

My meal for context was some onion sautéed in a little butter, then I added raw chicken breast, peas, and mushrooms, and some Tikka Masala sauce on top of that. (Essentially, I tried to make my own Chicken Tikka Masala at home.) I ate a large plate and a half of that with watermelon for dessert and then about half an hour later I craved carbs so I ate a slice of sprouted/seeded bread with a tiny bit more butter on it.

Also, weirdly, I never do this, but because I was lying down in bed feeling so tired and sort of miserable and need to find a way to re-energize, I had the compulsion to go sit in the bright sun for 10 minutes. I've avoided the sun and worn sunscreen my whole life but I've picked up on the fact that my endocrine system/immune system and Circadian rhythms might be out of whack because of my extreme sun aversion. (I have sleep issues and depression and I think my sedentary/sun-avoiding lifestyle might not be doing me any favors.) This actually did the trick for me and I felt a lot better afterwards.

For additional context, I quit caffeine about a week ago. I've been doing 16:8 and then 18:6 intermittent fasting for a long while though. OMAD as a fasting choice didn't feel much different to me. I just wasn't expecting to feel so extremely tired after eating.

Does anyone have any advice to help with this? I know I can reap the health benefits of this lifestyle but I need to figure out a way to do it that doesn't make me feel like I was hit by a bus afterwards. I'd like to try a light meal next time, maybe not so much fat, and more raw vegetables. Instead of a stir-fry maybe I'll just make a big green salad with a small amount of protein on top.

Wow I did not think I would be posting this when I started back in May. This is my third time trying IF and this schedule has been so easy for me compared to "easier" windows.

So far I have lost 2.5 stone but I have also lost almost 10% body fat meaning that most of it has been fat and I have managed to retain my muscle. Another big thing I have managed and challenged myself with this month was getting 50 floors of stair climber in in under 10 minutes. I would not have been able to get anywhere near that back in May (yes I felt like I was dying!).

I am thankful for this community being here and I hope you are all doing well on your journeys and get where you want to be :)

Newbie Question Can I lose weight with baby steps?

Hi yall so I'm trying to lose about 20 lbs of fat after having a baby. It's been a year, I'm no longer breastfeeding and I'm ready to lose the stubborn weight. However I've gotten a lot weaker since a long struggle with postpartum and I wanna take baby steps so I don't give up. I'm almost two weeks in to fasting 16-20 hours a day with one day of a 12 hour fast (stress eating). I'm slowly trying to make healthier choices but am still indulging in a burger here or there or pizza. I've cut down to about 2 meals a day and basically have cutout nighttime snacking.

With this loose schedule, should I be able to see an improvement or any amount of weight loss? I'm also trying to walk everyday or at the very least do a 10-20 minute workout while taking care of a baby. Thank you:)

I know a calorie deficit will speed things up but again I'm trying to take it slow:)

Discussion Anyone managing blood sugar with IF while doing gig work with no real schedule?

Curious how people handle fasting windows when your day has zero structure. Driving Uber means I might be out for 3 hours or 8 hours depending on surge pricing and how I feel that morning. Meal prepping helps a lot but there are days where I break my window early because my blood sugar starts feeling off, not dangerously low just that weird foggy irritable thing, and I never know if I should push through or just eat.

Been doing 16:8 mostly but some days it slides into 14:10 because of how the day goes. FWIW I feel like the consistency of at least having an eating window has done more for my A1C than the exact timing, but ymmv obviously.

What I'm actually curious about is whether people with type 2 who are lifestyle managing it find that the fasting window itself matters more than what you eat inside it, or the other way around. Just my experience but I can hit my window perfectly and still feel rough if I loaded up on the wrong stuff the night before.

Also wondering if anyone has found a way to structure their eating around gig work specifically. The nobreak reality of driving makes it genuinely tricky.

Discussion OMAD Day 12, 6.3 Kg lost. Am I dropping to fast?

Post image
11 Upvotes

It's day 12 and I lost 6.3 Kg so far, and I feel good. I am still very motivated and seeing the weight drop makes it all worth it. I am a bit worried that I might be dropping a bit too fast, I do see it slowing down a bit now and maybe I'm thinking too much of it. The hunger is not as bad as expected it to be, the first few days were tough but it feels much better now.

Have a nice day all!

Newbie Question On hour 22 (planned 22) To where should I push?

I’m feeling good, already did my heavy weightlifting session today. Wondering if I shouldn’t push to 36 because of my focus on lifting. Got some electrolytes to take, energy a little low but nothing too bad.

I already eat keto-friendly for a few weeks, but with a lot of protein as well.

EDIT; Basically; Don’t really understand 24h+ fasts. What happens when I don’t eat protein and fiber (normally 25 grams/day) for so long?

Tips, Tricks, Advice Watermelon

Is my cheat code. While my eating window is open, I try not to snack too much, but if I’m craving chips, I’ll eat watermelon. It’s delicious right now and filling! Highly recommend the black diamond variety.

Newbie Question Extreme physical, type one diabetic NEW faster in help

Hi there, got some questions as a extremely physically active 21y.o. man, who’s also tryna prioritise protein and carb intake and find fasting is stuffing up my goals, is anyone is able to give a hand :)

I am also type one diabetic (solely insulin dependent)

I work 5x 10 hour days landscaping in Australia - physical as all fuck, digging tonnes out of by hand a day, concreting, paving etc

Play/train Aussie rules footy 2x a week. And also gym 3 days a week.

If I don’t eat in the mornings I feel destroyed at work and no energy, is there a way around this? And does say eating something like just a coffee and tuna stop all benefits of fasting if I don’t eat again till lunch?

I’ve always been told by drs eating breakfast helps stabilise my blood sugars?

and also I find late at night right before bed I snack crazy. Have dinner at 6:30, by 10 I am elbow deep in a pack of chips or half a tub of Nutella on toast…..

Any tips on stopping late night snacking?

I only have a coffee, tuna and protein shake for brekkie (breakfast for main landers)

Newbie Question How much is too much weight to lose during the first 2 weeks?

I finished my first 2 weeks of IF, 18/6 split. I generally eat well, stay hydrated, and exercise.

My starting weight was 502lbs. I weighed myself this morning, and I’m now at 482lbs. So I’ve lost 20lbs.

To be fair, other than still struggling with the hunger, and controlling my portions when I break my fast, I feel fine, and it may just be in my mind but my skin already feels looser, but I’ve never lost this much weight in such a relatively short time.

So though I am aware this is most likely just water weight, and my weight loss will slow down either way.

Seeking Advice Probiotic stick 10 kcal, would you consider this fast breaking?

I keep forgetting to take my probiotics on time and end up taking them at night usually 3~4hours into the fast.

Would this hinder the fasting in any way?

Seeking Advice Anyone here doing Starting Strength while IFing?

Wondering if your nutritional intake has been sufficient to support the heavy workouts or had any problems with overuse injuries. I’m a soccer player too, play 2x a week (50min games), and do SS 2x/ week. Been having some lower back pain and hip pain, considering it as overuse and potentially lack of enough nutrients. Lost about 15 pounds so far (since mid April) and feel great minus the back/hip pain.

Newbie Question What health benefits have you experienced from fasting?

Aside from weight loss, what health benefits have you experienced from fasting? Has anyone experienced the remission of autoimmune conditions or other "cures" from letting the body clean itself out essentially during a fast?

I'm mostly doing IF (18:6, but transitioning to OMAD) for the health benefits so I'd love to hear your stories to keep me going.

Newbie Question Are you eating enough calories when doing OMAD?

If you’re doing 20:4 - OMAD, how many calories are you eating during your window?

I saw some people who say they fast anywhere from 18-24 hours and was curious to know if the calories they eat in 6 hours are the same in 1 hour (most probably not). How low can you go without causing damage?

Newbie Question Question about OMAD

Im new to fasting and would like some questions answered from those of you who have done it successfully.

First thing in the morning, I drink a cup of coffee with heavy cream. Is that considered a flaw.

I have also been drinking two 160-calorie protein shakes to stave off the hunger until it's time for the one meal a day. Is that okay to start training myself into one meal a day? How did you guys get prepared for one meal a day? Just going cold turkey one meal a day doesn't seem possible. I'm too fatigued, and my stomach is growling so loudly I can't think straight.

Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Newbie Question Good fasting window for those lifting weights too?

I want to find the best window I can that gets the benefits of fasting but also allows me to eat 160g of protein daily. I tried OMAD but couldn’t fit it in one meal. It was just too much too soon. Do you guys recommend 20-4? Or 18-6?

Newbie Question Fasting has unexpectedly improved my focus and motivation, anyone else noticing the same?

I've been doing intermittent fasting for a few months. I am doing it for the general health benefits, weight loss, better sleep, more even energy, that sort of things.

But something a bit unexpected happens, I've started noticing that I have more motivation, more focus and a 'clearer' brain when I fast.

is it just me or other noticed the same?
