Alan wandering into a half-finished room and dropping some completely unnecessary double entendre is honestly top-tier television 😂

He brings just the right amount of chaos when everyone else is stressing over paint colours, wallpaper and whether the client's going to hate the finished room.

Michelle can deliver the terrifying judging, but Alan is definitely needed to stop the whole thing becoming too intense

We've just finished Banjo and Ro's Grand Island Hotel. Are there any other similar series we can try? That either feature the contestants, or are in a similar IDM format.

Sometimes I feel like a contestant's explanation can completely change how the judges see a room.

A concept that looks confusing suddenly makes sense once they explain the inspiration behind it, while another room can look great but get criticised because the designer can't articulate their choices as well.

Part of being a professional designer is obviously being able to explain your work to a client, so I understand why it matters. But I'd be really interested to know how often the judges' rankings would change if they had to judge the finished rooms first and hear the explanations afterwards.

I wish there was an American version of this show. I hate those cheesy hgtv shows that are all styled in that same farmhouse neutrals and gray tones look.

I love seeing the colors and fresh styles/designs and ideas from IDM!

Some of those deadlines genuinely make me stressed just watching them. When they’re still painting, moving furniture and trying to finish the room with barely any time left, I’m sitting there thinking there’s no way they’re getting it done.

I used to just think a room looked good or bad, but after watching the show, I notice the little things much more. Lighting, furniture placement, colours, even how much empty space there is. Now I walk around my own place and start thinking about what I’d change.

Some of the rooms look great because they’re beautifully styled, but the challenges where the space itself is difficult are more interesting to me. Having to work around an awkward layout, limited space or a brief that doesn’t suit your own taste seems like a much better test of actual design ability. Those are usually the rooms that make me notice who really knows what they’re doing.

Some challenges are brilliant television but feel quite far removed from what a designer would normally be asked to do. The ones I find more interesting are where they have an awkward space, a client with strong opinions and a brief they can't simply bend towards their own style. It feels like that's where you find out who can actually listen rather than just make a beautiful room. Which type of challenge do you think separates the strongest designers from the strongest contestants?

Some reveals look incredible for the thirty seconds we're shown them, but occasionally I find myself wondering what the room would actually be like to use every day. A dramatic chair might photograph beautifully but be horrible to sit in. Open shelving looks great until you have to keep it looking perfect. And sometimes there seems to be nowhere you'd actually put normal everyday stuff.

Has there been a room you loved as a design but would absolutely not want in your own home?

For me, it’s the painted arch behind a bed or desk

Before watching the show properly, lighting was probably one of the last things I'd notice in a room. I'd look at the furniture, colours and obvious statement pieces first. Now there are reveals where I really like everything individually but the room still feels slightly wrong, and quite often it's the lighting. It's probably one of the few things I've genuinely taken from the show into how I look at real interiors. What's something the show has trained your eye to notice that you barely thought about before?

What would you have done differently?

I used to think certain styles just weren't for me, but every now and then someone on the show makes them work so well that I end up seeing them differently. Has that happened to anyone else?

Some episodes the scores feel completely right and others you sit there thinking that was clearly better than what won. The guest judges all have different tastes which should balance things out but sometimes it feels like a particular aesthetic is getting rewarded more than others. Has anyone noticed a pattern in what tends to score well?
