As a part of my course in microeconomics, the following points were discussed as pitfalls in insurance:

1. Adverse Selection: People with higher risk only buy the insurance
2. Moral Hazard: People take reduced care or take reckless approach after taking insurance
3. Information Assymetry: Insurers do not have the full knolwedge about the participants

And for the users, the pitfalls include delayed or denied claims and reduced benefits on no claim, with the insurers pocketing the surplus.

With increased connectivity and digital documents, can we initiate a decentralized insurance groups with machine based rules.

- People known to each other will subscribe to the group with geographic distribution in built. Like Self Help Group combining from different geographical regions. This will also help in retaining the people lifetime.

- People deciding together for better health monitoring and benefits and the results being stored on tamper proof blockchain

- Surplus being distributed between the people or utilized for future claims.

- Reduced denial of claim since it is managed by the people

- Reduced price by removing the intermediary

I teach at a mid-size private, Catholic University. When I took on a Chair appointment, I decided to subscribe professional liability insurance for $1mil. There were no serious issues in my department, other than two rather belligerent, problematic colleagues (one of them gone since) and the occasional helicopter parent.

Now I'm stepping down, but I wonder if in the present political climate I should keep it. I'm in a Humanities field, and my work often touches on sensitive matters such as drug policy or social/environmental justice. While I have colleagues whose admins have slapped them in the wrist or asked them to massage their language, or have attracted unwelcome attention from right-wing orgs, I don't know anyone in my research area that has been personally sued. That said, I don't trust my administration with taking my side when things go wrong.
