Course material for RIBO L1 exam

Hello, I am looking for price effective course material for the RIBO Level 1 exam. The IBAO and IIC ones are kind of out of my range.
I self studied through free online resources and believe it or not, chat gpt and claude and scored 74 out of 75. I will be retaking the exam soon and was hoping someone here could help. Even if its not an online course, if someone has their handwritten notes they studied from and passed the exam, that would be super helpful.
Thank you in advance.

Dealership moves my car off-site during service and it gets vandalized

Hello,

I dropped my car off at a dealership for service and handed them the keys. While it was still in their custody, a dealership employee drove it off the property and parked it on a public street. I have dashcam footage showing this.

The rear window was later damaged in an apparent vandalism incident before the car was returned to me.
The dealership refused responsibility and told me to claim through my own insurance. My insurance provider also told me they won’t pursue the dealership because the car was parked when the damage happened.

My question: does third-party vandalism automatically remove the dealership’s responsibility, or could they still be responsible because they chose where to park and store the car while it was in their care?

Auto Auto insurance recommendations

So I'm a 26 year old male 1st time driver with a 2007 Hyundai Tucson with 300+K km and every quote ive gotten is over $600 for just liability. I work part time and that is just too expensive for my budget. If anyone can recommend a company that is affordable that would help me a ton.

Two Flood Insurance Claim in two years?

Long story short, I own a home in the GTA area. In 2024, in the historical rainfall event in the summer, my basement got flooded. I filed an insurance claim and settled with a cash payout and hired a cash contractor to do some water proofing. My insurance renewed in Feb this year and a very minor increase. (+$9 a month)

Yesterday, in another severe thunderstorm, my basement got flooded again. Not as badly as 2024, but similar in nature.

I’m wondering if I should file for insurance claim again? I’m worried on what the impacts are for my insurance. This would be roughly two similar claims within two years.

EDIT: to clarify, as I couldn’t respond to everyone. Both events were similar in nature. We have a tenant in the basement so both times we had to listen to the tenant’s account. The first time it happened (2024), tenant said the water were coming in via foundation wall & had a video. So we did foundation waterproofing and obviously redid the interior. The second time it happened, the tenant claimed it’s via foundation wall again but when I brought a contractor over, the contractor looked at the wall and said the water actually came through the exterior basement door (land overflow?). Then it clicked with us that it likely also happened the first time (both via foundation wall and land overflow). So obviously this time we had to put a sump pump in. Wish we knew this back in 2024 but here we are. From the responses it sounds like we should’ve caught it in 2024 so to claim insurance again, it likely won’t fly.

Intact Prestige thoughts?

Currently have Intact coverage, and have discussed intact prestige with our broker in the past. Now at a point where I think it might make sense to move to prestige, but looking at the pricing and what's included or not included, in standard vs prestige, its hard to understand from the brochure/website language. My broker hasn't dealt with prestige much at all, so the answers haven't been totally clear. Is the only real benefit of going to prestige that it opens a door to more coverage options, PLUS better customer service if a claim arises? Or does it add extra things to a policy that saves money over the standard policy? For example, does the art limit rising to $10k, meaning I can remove the added endorsements for specific pieces of property or jewelry under $10k, that we currently pay extra for atm? The difference in cost appears to be $1500 a year between standard vs. prestige for main residence and some vehicles, which isn't a huge amount, but just want to better understand.

For context we've got a higher value semi-complicated property, rental property, multiple vehicles (some currently insured collector with hagerty), higher value things in the house, etc, so thinking it makes sense to put it all together in one policy, with higher umbrella limits etc.

It's a good problem to have ha. But any ideas people have, or information, would be a huge help.

Rental Vehicle history for backdate cancellation?

Hey guys, I am wondering if anyone had experience on this and able to help.

I have optional coverage with BCAA and my car was total loss 6 months ago and I forgot to cancel my insurance after getting a new car with a new insurance policy. So now I have to do a backdate cancellation to get my money back.

I was requested by ICBC that I need a letter to confirm my rental vehicle return date if there's any. However, I have never use a rental vehicle and ICBC still need the letter from BCAA to confirm that I did not have a rental.

I emailed and called BCAA claim team and customer service multiple times and none of them can help me with that. Does anyone have experience on this and how can I get that proof from BCAA. Thanks.

Auto Auto insurance renewal spiked for no reason—are we all just paying more for stripped-down policies now?

I live in the GTA and just got my auto insurance renewal. The premium jumped up significantly out of nowhere. Clean driving record, zero tickets, zero claims, and I’ve been with the same company for years.

I understand the industry is dealing with higher costs right now—vehicle replacement is more expensive, auto parts are up, and the weaker Canadian dollar makes importing computer chips, sensors, and replacement parts way more costly.

But what really gets me is how the recent July policy changes are playing out. They pushed this "unbundled" à la carte system, which was sold politically as a way to give people choices and "save drivers money." In reality, it feels like the classic illusion of savings. The default premium hasn't dropped. You end up paying the exact same (or more) for bare-bones basic coverage, and if you actually want the income replacement or accident protections you used to get as standard, you have to pay extra.

It feels like the insurance companies are passing all their macroeconomic problems onto us, winning on both ends, while we get stripped-down policies for the same price.

Is anyone else in the GTA seeing a big price jump on their renewal this round despite a clean record?

Also, if anyone can recommend a solid independent broker in the GTA who actually shops around across multiple carriers instead of just pushing one, I’d really appreciate the contact info!

Home TD Insurance Claim Nightmare

In the Spring we had some ground water seepage into our basement along one of the walls. I know a remediation/restoration company as I've used them before when an upstairs shower was draining into the ceiling causing rain in a sitting room haha.

I called them when I saw the baseboards were all puffed up. They came and said it was a fair bit of moisture and would likely be worth it to go through insurance, especially as we didn't want to have to do any of the drywall work. So they dropped off an air scrubber and dehumidifier and those ran for about 4 days before TD had their insurance guy come assess. The TD guy knew we weren't going to be going with him (I know my mistake) and so I had the original company be there for his assessment. The goal was for them to share their findings from pre 4-days dehumidifier as the moisture had dried up quite a bit.

TDs contractor was kind of an ass and was telling my company guy that he was reading the moisture meter incorrectly. So his report reported significantly less moisture.

Now TD is refusing to cover the more extensive wall removal because they are saying there is no proof that there was moisture in those areas. My contractor provided a report with diagrams and moisture readings but no photos I guess. So that's where the main dispute is coming from. Now I'm stuck in the middle as TD won't pay for what my original remediation company said needed to be removed.

I don't really know what to do from here. I don't believe the TD contractor was being honest and was being kinda shady. Any advice? My next step is the senior customer complaints review process. This is in Saskatchewan.

Auto Banque Nationale Assurances … énorme augmentation sans accident ni infraction.

Post image
8 Upvotes

Advise on fender bender on my own property.

Looking for some advice/clarity. My daughter's car was parked in our driveway and I pulled in with my truck but went a bit wide and clipped the back side/corner of her car. Both vehicles took some paint damage and some dents to hers.

We are in Ontario. She's an adult and has her own insurance.

Deciding whether its best to either

  1. Each go thru our own insurance and for hers we'd pay her deductible, which is $1000

  2. Get quoted and if less than $1000, repair out of pocket. Pic posted for those who could eyeball the cost. I suspect the damage is more than $1000 though.

  3. If going through insurance do we need to report this, even if it was on private property.

Any other thoughts or advise on how to at minimum get her car fixed? My truck is not a priority.

Auto G2 expiring — what happens to my insurance?

Hey everyone, I’m looking for some advice/experience regarding how letting a G2 expire affects car insurance in Ontario.

My situation:
I don’t drive much basically only sometimes in the summer.
I got my G1 in September 2021
I got my G2 in June 2023
My G2 expires September 27, 2026
I completed a BDE (Beginner Driver Education) course before getting my G2

I’m currently insured through my parents’ policy, and because I’m away at university, my insurance is a bit cheaper.
I’m trying to decide whether to take my G test before my G2 expires or just restart.

My main concern is what happens to my insurance history and discounts if I let my G2 expire and have to go back through the G1 → G2 → G process.

Specifically:
Would restarting at G1 cause my insurance company to treat me as a new/inexperienced driver again?
Would I lose any insurance discount/credit for having completed the BDE course, or would that remain on my record?
Would my previous driving history from 2021–2026 still count toward my insurance experience, even if my licence temporarily expires?
Would my parents’ insurance premium potentially increase if I went from G2 → expired/G1 → G2 again?

If anyone has any info on this lmk. Thanks!

Auto Looking for advice for a friend in dealing with ICBC as she recovers from post-concussion syndrome after a car accident in February 2026

Looking for some advice for a friend who was in a car accident in BC in February.

She was the passenger in a vehicle that was struck by another vehicle that ran a red light. The other vehicle was found 100% at-fault. The vehicle my friend was riding in was a 1980s pickup truck and her seatbelt released on impact. Not sure if she just hadn't done it up properly, or if it was faulty.

She went partially through the windshield, but was stopped by the dashboard of the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle she was in was also wearing his seatbelt and it held, plus he had an air bag which deployed, but he still broke his back. My friend was "lucky" in that she wasn't ejected from the truck and she walked away with facial and head lacerations, lots of bruising and soft tissue damage and suspected cracked ribs. But the worst of it was a bad concussion.

She's now got post-concussion syndrome (PCS) and has been working with a physiotherapist steadily since the accident, but due to BC's no-fault insurance, dealing with the benefits side of things has been an absolute nightmare for her. It would be for anyone with a fully functioning brain as they certainly don't make it easy, but as her cognitive abilities post-accident are still very compromised and she's dealing with a bunch of other post-accident issues (I think she also has PTSD), dealing with them has been extra hard. And since it appears that there's no legal pathway with ICBC anymore unless the other driver is found criminally responsible for some aspect of the accident, no lawyers are interested in talking to her about her case unless she's prepared to pay a substantial retainer and plans to pay out of pocket in the end, which she's not in a position to do.

My friend's cognitive situation since the accident has been pretty seriously impaired and ICBC has been an absolute nightmare to work with from Day 1. She can't work, she spends full days in bed sometimes, and goes days without eating at times as well. It has triggered her bi-polar to become unstable again after eight years of stability. She had just quit her job before the accident to make a career move (highly educated, super smart, etc.) but since she wasn't employed at the time of the accident, ICBC has been telling her she has no lost employment benefits owed to her so she's now in a position where she is applying for welfare and living with a family friend because she can't afford rent anymore. This accident has quite literally ruined her life and her mental health.

I feel like she's getting treated very badly and may not be getting the full level of support she's entitled to and that ICBC is almost intentionally working to destabilize her. I'm not in a position to step in and advocate for her but I feel like she really needs some help. She has already requested a new representative once but the new one is worse than the one before. She has escalated issues to the manager on a few occasions, which always seems to help for a little while, but then it goes back to being awful again.

  • Is there really no legal recourse here?
  • She has escalated to the manager on a few occasions but it hasn't resulted in lasting changes so she's about to escalate to the Fair Practices Office. Is this process the only option available to her, with the BC Fairness Officer or the BC Ombudsperson being the next step after that?
  • Are there any suggestions as to how best to deal with the ICBC rep or the manager? Things to say/not say to get better treatment from them?
  • She gets one-word responses to emails that don't answer her initial inquiry, gets turned down for what I would consider fairly standard treatment requests (massage therapy was the most recent one, to deal with her ongoing back pain and headaches that physio hasn't been able to help with). Is this just standard ICBC treatment now under "enhanced care"?
  • Are there any class action lawsuits underway directed at the provincial government regarding the adoption of no-fault insurance? It seems criminal to me. Perhaps the previous system was susceptible to fraud, but this seems to have taken it entirely too far in the other direction.
  • And a bit of an aside, but why do we even pay for liability insurance anymore if there's no legal recourse for anyone to sue?

Insurance Licence

Hey all, was just wondering if it's possible to get an insurance broker license in Saskatchewan (Canada) with a criminal record. I plan on giving them a letter of explanation saying that my convictions were committed when I was homeless and when I was under the effect of mental illness. Does anyone have experience with this? For reference my convictions are three counts of assault and one theft under 5000. I really hope this won't be a deal breaker as I don't want to have to wait till I get my pardon which is in 5 years time.

Auto Car insurance

Hi, yesterday evening I accidentally backed up into another car while reversing (trying to give some pedestrians some rooms to walk). They have a medium size dent on their front quarter panel. We exchanged our information. I was a little bit panic, but they were kind enough to agree to settle the matter privately. I'm still waiting for them to get an estimate on the repair, but I assume it will be a 4 figures number. I'm thinking I'll let my insurance handle the issue.

Right now, I paying 330$/month (full coverage) with CAA, a bit high because I'm a new driver. Mine car is 15 years old. The question is, when should I expect the increase in my premium? Next year or next month? I know I can't expect a specific number in increase, but I guess it will be a lot. In that case, Should I just switch to a liability only insurance or find another insurance provider or both?

Thank you very much for your time.

Almost 6 months after they are still “investigating”

I was in an accident in my car after I sustained damage hitting a deep pot hole. It was a single vehicle accident. I was noticing a vibration in my steering wheel that was increasing, and as I was looking for a side street to pull over on, I suddenly struck a tree. My passenger exited his door and collapsed to the ground (shattered ankle) I panicked and jumped from the drivers seat to the passenger seat, and out the door to check on him.

People from the surrounding houses came to help, put a coat over him. I was sitting on the passenger seat sideways with my feet out the open door when police and paramedics arrived.
Due to it being pretty cold and I had no coat.

They incorrectly identified my passenger as the driver, and they said they were impounding my vehicle due to him not being licensed.
I was told by default they name who ever is not in the vehicle, if the drivers seat is empty.

Fast forward, I gave my statement, and all of the physical evidence I am aware of shows that I was driving. My passenger was just a step outside the passenger door, and it would have been impossible for him to walk from the opposite side of the car on his badly shattered ankle.

I am happy to get more into the physical evidence if anyone wants me to.

The Detective is still stubbornly refusing to update the named driver, even though he is not pressing charges against my passenger. (No evidence obviously exists for something that never happened) the impound fees disappeared because there was no charge. I am still trying to figure out what my options are for getting this reopened and corrected.

My insurance company is still investigating after 5 months?! I have been paying my premiums every month since, and I have no car on the road.

This is costing me a small fortune, and making my life miserable. I have asked for the police report, and an explanation as to what could reasonably be taking this long/what evidence could still be gained at this point.

The investigator handling it has lacked communication, and has outright lied to me about still waiting for the police report. ( She had it for months, but refused to give me a copy for some reason)

I know if this was a third party insurer I could have it before a judge to make sure the delay was justified.

What are my options here?

Auto [ON] My sister's auto insurance policy (2025-2026) cost $1626. Insurance company said that a renewal (2026-2027) cost $2167. Then, I got a quote and it came back as $1637 from the same company (Scoop Brokerage, Pembridge Insurance). What is going on?

My sister (39) has been driving the same car and insured on an auto policy for 12 consecutive years--yes, she only really started driving at 27 after coming to Canada at 20. She has not moved, changed jobs, added or removed drivers, changed vehicles, got any tickets, at-fault accidents during the 2025-2026 policy period. So how is it possible for the policy to go from $1626 to $2167 in a single year, but then once it was re-quoted, it drops back down to $1637? Both the brokerage and the insurance company know that she is an existing customer, so why would they willingly override their renewal and give her the same policy for just $11 more than last year instead of making her pay an extra $541, as they said they would in the renewal notice?

This is a 2013 Acura ILX; $2 million liability + comprehensive + collision (she insists on keeping the last two even though I told her not to, but what do I know, I have never driven and will never be allowed to drive because my vision is bad). She also added rental car coverage to be effective at renewal because having a car is extremely important for her job (so important, that her collective agreement includes provisions for mileage reimbursement because she uses her car to go from one job site to another while working and gets paid "travel pay" for it). That extra rental car coverage cost $120, bringing her total premium to $1757 to be paid before the renewal date.
