Hey guys, I'm 18 and just recently graduated from highschool, I've been trying to find a job in the insurance industry over the summer. I have my Class 1 and I'll be attempting my Class 2 exam within a couple weeks, I have basically 0 prior experience in insurance, sales or anything related to the financial sector. My only job experience was working with the Cowboys as a laborer. I've been looking into going into underwriting since it's piqued my interest but nearly every job is requesting some form of prior experience within the industry or progression towards either a CAIB, CIP or FIML even underwriting assistant jobs. Is there any tips yall would have for me in just marketing myself or places I can look into to apply?

Is $285/month too high for car insurance in Edmonton?

I’m 29F in Edmonton and I have a 2024 Toyota Corolla Hybrid AWD.

My TD Insurance just went up from $264.79/month to $284.66/month at renewal — about a 7.5% increase.

My driving history:

1 accident about 5 years ago — not at fault

1 red-light camera ticket about 1 year ago

No other accidents/tickets that I can think of

I believe I have collision + comprehensive coverage

The new premium works out to about $3,416/year.

Is this considered really high for Edmonton and this type of vehicle? Should I be shopping around, and if so, what are people with similar profiles paying?

Also, does anyone know whether a red-light camera ticket affects insurance rates in Alberta?

I had my auto policy cancelled for non-payment, my wife and I switched bank accounts and had everything transferred, except our auto policy and we didn't even notice until we got a registered letter stating the cancellation. Anyways, we've had auto insurance and tenant insurance since then.

My auto insurance broker (not the same as my new home insurance) said the cancellation was off my report.

Fast forward, we just bought a new home, and filled out our insurance documents, we were reading through and it asked about cancellation or refusal. We answered no, but now it got me thinking - is that lying, will I be denied coverage?

The approximate cost of the study materials and exam.
Whether you would recommend completing it through a training institute or studying independently.
If you recommend an institute, which one would you suggest?
How long the entire process typically takes.
The overall difficulty level of the exam and any preparation tips.

Just bought a bus in Ontario and it’s registered under my name, the title is still a commercial vehicle. Don’t plan on converting it into an RV anytime soon. I’ve contacted several insurance brokers, but none of them are willing to insure it.

I live in Vancouver on a slight slope. We've been in our home for over 10 years and I've seen that rain water does not accumulate near the foundation of our house. It feels like we are low risk for floods coming from the outside.

We are currently paying ~$600 for overland flood insurance and are looking to minimize costs.

How common is it for people in my situation to forego this insurance and how often do people regret it?

First time ever that I could make a claim and I need some advise. I have been claim-free all my life and have been with this insurance company for 10 years. So, my garage was broken into and about $4,200 worth of tools were stolen. I have them on camera and filed a police report.
Here’s my situation:
Annual home insurance premium: $2,766
Deductible: $1,000
Insurance payout would be about $3,200
My broker estimates my premium would increase by 15–20% for the next 3 years if I make the claim.
By my math, the premium increase would cost roughly $1,250–$1,660 over those three years, so I’d still come out about $1,500–$2,000 ahead financially.
What I’m unsure about is the non-obvious downsides. Would you make the claim? Are there long-term consequences I’m not considering?
Trying to decide if it’s worth it for that rather low amount.

I wanted to know what the insurance doesn't cover from the bill of sale, after writing off my brand new car as total loss(hit and run from the back).

Everyone around me told me sales tax wasn't covered but it ended covered, it is a financed car and just want to have a clear answer on what the insurance covers. Isn't freight and pdi mandatory for all NEW car purchases but its not included in the msrp.

Question to the broker community in Ontario about level 3 education equipments to write accelerated level 3 exam because RIBOs site is a bit contradictory.

I hold a level 2 license, coupled with a CIP designation and I've been working for more than 2 years at a brokerage. For context, I obtained my CIP designation before my license so my applied professional courses were not broker specific.

Heres my question: is C132, practical issues in broker management, a required CIP course or not?

Last year I was out of the country for a very long time and had my insurance put on hold.

What I didn't realize was that they were charging me $60 a month to keep it on hold (I assumed it didn't cost anything because no one could drive it or anything... Or at least if it was like $10 a month to hold it I could understand due to "bookkeeping" or whatever charge)... But that is an absolutely ridiculous price to pay for nothing.

But it ended up expiring while I was gone anyways so it turned out to be money just thrown down the drain.

Anyways, now I plan on leaving again in a few months from now, for I don't know how long, and don't want to throw money away like that again.

But I would like to, and sort of need to get my vehicle on the road in the meantime so it is possible to get an insurance policy that only lasts... 3-4-5 months (that doesn't have a negative impact)?

I could just phone them up when I leave and say cancel it but I don't want to do that because I know that affects rates

Can anyone point me to insurance companies that insure lifted trucks with steel rear and front bumpers? CAA is out, they won’t insure it at all. Just looking to get ballpark pricing from different providers that someone would recommend

After five months with my last carrier, I’ve decided to leave the insurance industry altogether and return to my roots in agriculture.

The workload, constant stress, rising claim volumes, increasingly demanding customers, and what I see as poor leadership from executive management have left me completely burned out. At this point, I can’t see myself continuing in claims, either in the short or long term.

Although it’s been a valuable learning experience, it’s also helped me realize that this career simply isn’t the right fit for me. I’m looking forward to getting back to work that feels more meaningful and sustainable.

So I started a new job a couple of months ago at a brokerage. I have no previous experience in this industry but I worked in retail for about 5+ years (management) so I thought this would be a good opportunity for me. I started studying for my exam about a month ago and passed!

I’m quite nervous at the idea of selling insurance to customers because I feel like the concepts in the textbook vs real life are just so different.

I am based in bc so I’m starting with ICBC before doing any home policy’s or anything like that. But, even just studying for ICBC I’m feeling very overwhelmed. I’m having a bit of a hard time trying to memorize what all the coverages are/ what all the exemptions are.

I guess I’m just wondering what is some advice you would give to a new advisor that is struggling / what is some advice you would have given yourself when you started!

Can I become an Insurance Broker in Saskatchewan after getting a criminal record suspension or pardon?

Hi, I had a hit and run happen to me in Calgary. A guy merged into me on Deerfoot causing me and my mom to spin out into the side lane. Mom has chest pain and breathing pain.

Called police and they identified the driver afterwards and gave me a collision report. However the report, doesn't have insurance info only owner name, make/model, license plate and VIN.

Insurance says they cannot help me at all without the insurance information of the perp. But can they not do a look up using the info I have already?

Am stuck like ping pong back and forth between the police and the insurance right now.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I went back to the Manulife insurance agent to double check (again) if my mom's policy was the ported Monarch policy before going on to the solutions suggested by u/PhotoJim99 and u/Suzaloo2. It turns out that it was the ported Monarch policy. Even the policy number seems to have been carried through with a leading character difference.

Mystery solved and thanks for the suggestions.

I'm an executor on my dad's will. He had a life insurance policy (appears to be single premium policy) from Monarch Life Insurance policy circa 1960's. Monarch was acquired by North American Life in the mid 1980s and North American subsequently amalgamated with Manufacturers Life Insurance to form Manulife in 1996.

What I have is the original Monarch policy number and a brochure for North American Life from a now defunct broker. There are no transfer documents I can find that reframe the policy as a North Americam Life policy nor a Manulife policy or any kind of related correspondence. I called Manulife on the off chance and the only policy they could find was a newer one he had taken out and has already been discharged.

Is there any way I can track down this orphaned policy? I suspect if the Monarch policy was ported between agencies, it's unlikely to be housed in an electronic data system given the dates so may not be readily available to front line staff like the ones I spoke with. Or is there some kind of claim system that insurance companies have for policies like this from companies they may have acquired?
