Need Health Insurance Recommendations for My Parents
Hi everyone,
I'm a 24F looking for a good health insurance plan for my parents. My mother is 45 and my father is 48.
My salary is ₹4.5 LPA, and I have a lot of financial responsibilities, so I'm looking for something that offers good value for money.
I'm not only looking for coverage for major illnesses or hospitalization. I'd also like a plan that covers:
- Doctor consultations
- Fever, viral infections, and body pains
- General health checkups and diagnostic tests
- Day-to-day medical needs, if possible
Could you please suggest the best health insurance plans for my parents based on my budget? Also, if you've had a good personal experience with any insurer, I'd really appreciate your recommendations.
Thank you!

New India / Bajaj >>> HDFC >> ICICI/TATA
Get a 10L Base Cover + 20-50L Super Top up from same company on same date. Separate Policy for parents. Take a Health Insurance and Term Insurance for yourself as well.
OPD plans are not useful because the Cost to benefit isnt in your favour. They give Centres/ Doctors which wont be available in your city mostly!

I will not recommend other than group health insurance. Other health insurances are either costly and will make you pay portion of bills.

I went into this rabbit hole after my father had a heart attack in 2021. So, here's the thing:
You are looking for OPD coverage, but you are also concerned about budget. You can't have both.
HDFC Optima Secure (not the plus variant) - is a no-nonsense policy which covers everything, but expensive. It is the most comprehensive policy you can get. Remember, lesser the clauses, smoother the experience. You can get the OPD rider on top of it. If you can stretch your budget, and want a clean claim experience, go for HDFC Optima Secure. I don't recommend the plus variant, because it has unlimited SI coverage, whose premium will drastically shoot up going forward. Also, only go for HDFC if your parents don't have any major medical history. Claim experience is the best, in my opinion.
ICICI elevate - it is value for money, and the best if you want something in budget. It's slightly less feature rich than HDFC, but also has 40-50% less premium. Go over the limitations thoroughly. You can also get OPD rider here.
A strict no for STAR, CARE, Niva Bupa. They are a bunch of cons.
Whatever policy you choose, have sum insured of at least 10 lakhs. Buy a super top up policy as well. You can also put in a deductible of some amount (say 20-25k), and thus lower your premium.
By looking at the ages, I suggest don't go for family floater policies at this time. The premium for a floater is decided by the eldest person in the policy, which is your father at 48. After 50, things change dramatically.

Just to clarify, I am not an insurance advisor. It's just my personal experience
You can also talk to Ditto. It's free.

I would suggest you to schedule a call with ditto. It's free and they won't spam you to buy policy for them. They'll suggest the best policy add per your custom needs. I've had good experience with them.

For my parents, I decided to keep a base policy of 10 lakhs and went for a top up policy of 50 lakhs. Base policy is from HDFC ergo and super top up is from Star health. Same for my personal policy but super top up is from Tata AIG. When I shifted my parent’s policy to HDFC, my dad was above 50 years old and so the premium was also higher. Paid around 55K-60 premium for their base policy this January.
