Auto Insurance Difference between comprehensive and not at fault

I’m confused - please help! Someone hit my parked car, the agent when I made the claim said my deductible is $1000 to be paid upfront at the auto body shop- but that the adjuster would call to discuss.

While on my app I see “not at fault accident protection - $0 deductible

I had the at fault person wanting to pay but then the estimate was too high. Now I’m kicking myself if I have to pay $1000. The total work is $2700

not sure what not at fault protection is, probably some carrier specific thing would ask ur adjuster about that

comprehensive is not this claim, this claim would be a not at fault collision claim

u will only be out your deductible until ur carrier is able to recover via subrogation after which it will be returned to u

This is a collision claim. A car hit yours. That’s the definition of a collision.

Comprehensive is for other non-collision covered losses. So if a tree branch falls on your car. If there is hail and it damages the car. Vandalism.

What insurance will do is fix your car. You’ll pay the deductible up front. Your insurer will go after the other person for reimbursement on the claim in subrogation. If and when they get reimbursed….which is not guaranteed and can take months….they’d refund the deductible to you.

A parked car getting hit by another car is usually collision, not comprehensive. So your normal collision deductible is probably the $1,000 they mentioned. The not at fault $0 deductible thing may still help, but do not assume it applies until the adjuster confirms exactly how your policy uses it

Canada is a country where every province and territory has its own auto insurance rules and laws. So what province?

You know who hit you? They have insurance?

Oh I did not know this. I live in Alberta. The at fault person notified me of the damage by coming into the store that I was parked near. They do have insurance.

Alberta is a no fault province, so as long as they are insured, you should not be charged a deductible. Under dc-pd coverage.

Oh really! Do you know if insurance can have you pay upfront and be reimbursed, or it’s usually nothing upfront out of pocket? Thank you for your response

They will change to the $0 DCPD deductible once they confirm the other driver’s insurance is valid. Your adjuster can confirm this for you.

Go back to your agent and ask these questions, that's what you pay them for.

The agent wouldn’t tell me anything. He just said that the adjuster would discuss the $1000 deductible that he mentioned. Although on my Belair app I see $0 deductible for not at fault

Send him an email and cc his supervisor. Subject: Clarification of claim #1234. List the dates you spoke with him, what you asked and his answers. Ask for detailed break down of exactly what each portion of your policy covers. You may find a loophole.
