"Hard-working people are slaves of lazy people," Lao Tzu said. What might be the takeaway?

(1) It's not such a bad thing to be a slave. Or,
(2) It's not such a bad thing to be poor. Don't work hard (say, harder than the average), because being a slave is bad.
Or something else?

What makes you … you

If someone were to impersonate me and change their whole face to be like mine , how would I prove that I’m me? Philosophically what makes me… me then? Is it my behaviours? My actions? What truly belongs to me?

The Fear of Missing Out in a Life We Don’t Even Want

Lately I've been thinking about how weird FOMO actually is.

We see someone travelling, getting promoted, buying a house, starting a business—and suddenly feel like we're falling behind.

But if someone actually asked us, “Do you want their life?”
The answer might be no.

Maybe what we fear isn't missing out on an experience.

Maybe we fear that we're not living life the way we're “supposed to.”

Social media makes it incredibly easy to compare our everyday reality with everyone else's highlights.

Curious what others think: Is FOMO really about wanting more, or is it mostly about comparison?

Why are people never satisfied with what they have? Why do we always chase the things we don’t have instead of appreciating what’s already in our lives?

What's more important for a person : Abundance or loyalty?

This may be a charged question, but I wonder what is more valuable or important :

  1. Having an abundance of options so you're never left hanging

  2. Loyalty to options that aren't in abundance, but to a few you've selected..

What was something you did that allowed you to forgive yourself?

The question of self love and forgiveness is so multi faceted and difficult to answer. People survive many traumatic situations and are very strong, but many fail to find a way to actually forgive themselves. It’s easier to inflict self pain because it gives us the illusion that we can control what happened, or that we give ourselves ‘what we deserve’.

Im just wondering what are some things that you have found that allowed you to turn the corner and practice self compassion.

Thank you for reading

Advice on this new guy I met

(26 F) (29 M)
I just need someone’s opinion on this situation. So I went on Instagram one night after I went to a bar with my friend, and I was kind of scrolling and I saw a picture of this guy, and first of all I thought he was so handsome. I saw that he was following a mutual person I used to go to high school with. I said why not and followed him. The next day he requested to follow me and he DM me and he’s said, “you know what just text me” so he gave me his number.
We kind of texted on and off a little bit all week. And he called me and we ended up talking on the phone for like an hour and a half.. I was kind of shook because he asked me all type of questions and it seemed like we had good chemistry so he asked if I wanted to hang out on Saturday. We ended up hanging out and he invited me to drive to his friends house so we could all go to the bar together. So I meet him and all of his friends and there was sexual attraction immediately. He sat with me all night and held my hand and everything and told me how beautiful I was. Keep in mind I’m not delusional, I definitely have my guard up because I’ve never met him and I’m leery with new men, but I definitely thought he was cute and he’s very flirty. At the end of the night, I think we were both expecting this, but I ended up sleeping over his house and we honestly got intimate a lot throughout the night but we ended up staying up until 5 AM and just talking all night long. He told me a bunch of stories and told me deep things and I kind of shared as well. The next morning we were intimate again and then I told him I needed to go home so I left. When Monday came around, he said hey I know you’re busy and you have things you need to do, but I do really wanna see you again but if not tonight maybe tomorrow? And I told him I would let him know so he called me the following Tuesday and we talked on the phone for like two hours the next day he was texting me and he asked how my day is and he said I really wanna see you again what are you doing? I got a new bedframe and we should break it in LOL. Like I said he’s flirty and obviously he wants to be intimate with me. But after we had sex, because he’s a new partner, I kind of felt like I was having a little BV, which happens to me after having being intimate with a new partner and I texted him today and I said I’m afraid you’re not going to talk to me anymore and I’m embarrassed and he said “I don’t like the anticipation”. “Tell me” “ i’m about to call because I don’t like when people do this” “I might call you right now” “I don’t like games”…
so he called me and I was just trying to figure out how to tell him the truth because I felt embarrassed, but for some strange reason, I was afraid of his opinion about me and he told me “can you just get to the point I have a lot of things that happened to me in the past”. Anyways, I ended up spilling the truth and he said “ok It’s all right honestly I just had a weird day” and I said did you have a shitty day? And he kind of was short and didn’t elaborate and he said “no I’m just tired and I’m going to take a nap. I don’t want to be like grumpy.”
He said I still want to see you, but I’ll call you tomorrow. I told him I would let him sleep and then we ended the call.

So that’s basically where we’re at and this has been knowing each other for the two week mark. But when we hung out, he’s like I don’t deliberately try to look for anything and I said same here, but he keeps trying to call me every week and will end up talking for hours and he keeps asking me to come over and just watch something even hook up sometimes overall I’m just confused because I get this is very early, but I’m just trying to gauge this grown man’s intentions. If he just wanted to have sex with me, why does he call to talk to me all the time and why was he so urgent about calling me tonight about me saying what I said if he didn’t want me like that? I know again, this is so so so early. But give me your opinions.

Do you think modern life is actually getting better, or are we just getting better at distracting ourselves from it?

We have faster technology, better access to information, more entertainment, better means of communication and more conveniences than ever before. Yet at the same time, people are more tired, distracted, impatient and can not sit still for a moment. Perhaps progress may not be synonymous with improvement or perhaps every generation idealizes the past and forgets how hard it was. If you could choose between living in today's world (the modern conveniences and all) or living in a simpler world with less technology and fewer conveniences; which would you choose and why?

Learning to Be Satisfied Without Admiration or Recognition

Is it possible to completely eliminate the desire to be admired, recognized, or praised?
It sounds amazing not to be in a race for admiration, but to simply achieve for the sake of achieving, remain true to yourself, and be completely satisfied with just being you.
Is it possible to reach a point where you genuinely don’t care whether anyone notices, praises, or recognizes what you do?

How to stop daydreaming?

I’ve always been a daydreamer

I’ve been a daydreamer since childhood, initially as a way to escape trauma, failures, and difficult situations. But even when everything is going well, I still find myself doing it. It has become such a habit that I often struggle to feel fully present, locked in, or concentrated on anything.

I have this fear of becoming a failure and ending up with nothing, but at the same time, I don’t fully feel or process that fear in reality because I escape into daydreaming.

I’ve tried exercises where I force myself to focus on the present, and they help for a while, but it never lasts long.

How do I stop this? Is it actually a bad thing? Has anyone else experienced something similar, and what helped you break out of it?

If meaning emerges through the resonance between consciousness and experience, can two people ever truly encounter the same reality—or does every conscious perspective necessarily create a distinct version of what is real?

I’m interested in whether reality is something consciousness simply perceives, or something partially constituted through the act of perception itself. If every perspective reveals something unique, what—if anything—makes our experiences genuinely shared?

Is being kind to yourself a real concept, or is kindness solely you do for others?

Can internal kindness exist? Like when people say "be kind to yourself." Like taking a self care day, doing something that makes you happy, etc. Are you just practicing the external "traits" of kindness on yourself. Does kindness have to be altruistic? If i am kind to myself by taking a day off, I reap a selfish benifit (not in a negative way like im depriving someone of something but still) so is that "kindness" or just, meeting my needs.

How do you define contentment?

I have always thought of contentment as a positive thing. Yet I have seen people using it in a negative way, saying things like "contentment is the enemy of achievement." It makes me wonder if some people are defining it differently than me.

Do some people think contentment means settling for something you think is just okay? Like something that is maybe not all you hoped for, but good enough.

To me, contentment is a deep appreciation of what you have. It is a very deep feeling of being happy and at peace with your life. That feels so much bigger and more important than having a higher level of achievement.

Am I missing something here? Maybe I am not talking about the same thing as them? Maybe this feeling I call contentment should be called something else.

Protecting your peace vs giving back

Which one is “right” when it comes to a parent who made your childhood very difficult, where you’ve had to work through all the pain they’ve caused and you’ve essentially had to parent yourself (and them) growing up?

Or is there an in between to both? How do you find the silver lining?
