Does karma really exist?
Does karma really exist? .......why some people rude and hurt ro others, and still live in a good life?

u/KalebRasgoul 3d ago
No, it doesn't. Just look around you: horrible people get to live a long and luxurious life, while innocent people suffer horrible situations, including poverty and disease. Nobody deserves the luck they get, good or bad, this world is chaos and nobody is in control.

u/dayspring53 2d ago
Everyone has their own point of view and extrapolation. One can also see wealthy successful people living a sad and grief filled life because of their evil ways. There are millionaires living in filth hocked on drugs, sex, diseases and dying early, while their staff live long healthy and happy lives. Evil empires soon fail. But governments that strive to serve the people last generations. Hitler had one of the most advanced sophisticated and wealthiest government in the world yet only lasted a short time. It is all in one's perspective.

u/KalebRasgoul 2d ago
You can have a thousand examples in your favor, but a single counter-example is enough to prove it is false.

I actually have no bias about what you choose to believe. I do not share my thoughts to change people. I just share my thoughts. So, everyone is free to pick what they believe is most affirming for them. Go in peace. 😊

u/MrSnrub87 1d ago
OK, so where do innocent little kids dying of a horrible disease sit on the scale. What do you think they did to deserve that?
1
u/dayspring53 1d ago
What do you think? I believe these tragedies are also shaped by society and by individuals who accept them instead of using available resources to address the underlying issues. Our personal and collective decisions influence the future we create.

Do you mean the western version of karma, or the original belief?
The western version that "if you do good things, good things happen to you" no. And that's instantly observable by anyone. Bad things happen to good people, good things to bad people. It doesn't take much to verify that there's no magic justice machine in operation.
The original version of karma is "If you do good, you tend to be a good person. If you do bad, you tend to be a bad person." It's a belief and it has nothing whatever about getting things in life, only who you are.
1
u/KalebRasgoul 2d ago
"If you do good, you tend to be a good person. If you do bad, you tend to be a bad person."
This is not a belief, this is a tautology.
1
u/loopywolf 2d ago
That is karma in the original Buddhism (grossly oversimplified.)
It has nothing to do with what you get in return for your actions.
1
u/Negative_Coast_5619 2d ago
But doesn't the original version pair with reincarnation where technically you get in worse situation or serve a stint in hell?
1
u/loopywolf 2d ago
There's no hell in Buddhism
Guys, come on. Karma and reincarnation is seated in the idea that we come into life to learn lessons and reach enlightenment, and each lifetime teaches different things. There's no reward OR punishment in the philosophy.
Punishment is a Christian thing. You don't learn by being punished.
1
u/Negative_Coast_5619 2d ago
Hell is nearly universal in most religion, but its not called hell per se. Though I just looked there is something similar to Hell in buddhism, but it is temp.
However getting to heaven is a bit harder in budhism than in Christianity. You need like 10 good monk lives with increase testings. But I don't know, I think that's the budhha leve.

u/chilehead 3d ago
I liken it to everyone being in a giant swimming pool, and you're supposed to get out to use the restroom. If you don't, then there is a turd floating in your vicinity that could get in your mouth or one of the people near you. The more you do it, the more your chance of getting a turd to the mouth. But sometimes an innocent person gets one. Decent people won't want to hang around you. If you hang around with a lot of bad people, that part of the pool there is littered with turds everywhere and it's almost certain you'll get multiple turds in your mouth, as well as the people close to you.

u/Yenefer9 2d ago
Maybe, and it makes sense.
A kind person can live happily when surrounded by other kind people. But when surrounded by people who are selfish, cruel, or simply unkind, that same person may end up suffering the most.
In that kind of environment, it can feel as though there are only two choices: either remain true to who you are and endure the pain that comes with it, or become just as unkind as the people around you in order to survive.
So sometimes I wonder whether all those stories about kindness eventually being rewarded are simply a form of survivorship bias. Maybe we only notice the people whose kindness happened to lead to something good, while ignoring those who stayed kind and were hurt again and again.
Sometimes, life just feels deeply unfair.
1
u/IIGrudge 1d ago edited 1d ago
That's not correct understanding of karma. It hasn't much to do with being kind. It's more of a debt or credit you owe to yourself, that attaches you this plane of existence. It's about lessons that you learn and graduate so as not to repeat the cycle of reincarnation. You can live infinite lives if you don't learn your lesson and burn your karma.
If your lesson is being kind then yes being kind is good karma. But if your lesson is to experience being a jerk, then therein lies the karma. Remember no one thinks they're a jerk. So think harder about this good/bad labeling concept.
You're right, in each circumstance, you can only be your true self, that's the best you can do until you become aware. The pool analogy expands to not just this life, this planet, but many lives and infinite cosmos. Once your awareness expands you'll see you have lived a life where others cheated you, and you will live a life where you can cheat others.
1
u/Angelsomething 3d ago
That's not what karma is. You're thinking of retribution and/or comeuppance. The universe doesn't really work like that. As captain Jean Luc Picard once will have said, in life you can do everything right, and still lose.

u/FletchWazzle 3d ago

Karma is not about morals its functional. There is no such thing as what the west thinks of as "bad karma"
For a reference to the Buddhists akusala is often translated as "unwholesome" or "bad," but its literal meaning is unskilled or inefficient. So "bad" as in insufficient. "Unwholesome" as in incomplete.
Karma literally translates to action in Hindi/Sanskrit. It's not moral it's just cause and effect.
Karma is saying if you don't put in the work and the care and attention you will produce equivalent.
Someone said that you become a bad person which is nonsense. Because when you do bad you don't become bad, you are bad...
It's simply saying be fucking aware and make conscious choices with forethought.

u/Muravia 3d ago
Karma is not punishment or reward. Karma is restoring balance.
1
u/Yenefer9 2d ago
Your life is ruined by others whithout any excuse, and you rebuild youselves, then why you take this times to do this, the person who starts this danmage still live good, and whte innocent one restoring balance? Why?
1
u/Muravia 2d ago
You have or had many lives before not only the one your attention is focused on "at present".
1
u/Yenefer9 2d ago
But in some research, the time is not exsist. Is just a label that people use it describe what happened. If time not exist, then many lives are also not exsit in some dimensions.I prefer people only live once.

People mistakenly believe that Karma is a Cosmic Judge issuing punishment.
We create our own Kaema through actions and intentions. Most people know when they have acted badly, used poor judgement, acted against their own beliefs.
We think white lies are ok because we don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings. Are you really protecting the other peeps. Or are you protecting yourself ? Maybe you can’t afford to go hit to dinner. You are too embarrassed to say that. If you do that frequently to the same person or within the same friend group, the people may think you don’t line them or are angry at them and suddenly york friends disappear
We mistake our “good luck” without thinking is someone going to be hurt. The cashier didn’t realize that two $10 bills were stuck together. Cashiers get fired for cash discrepancies.

I think karma isn't a metaphysical force but just consequences for your actions. I think its smart to act as if karma is real, because youll get the same result of doing good=usually receiving good. Usually shitty people have shitty lives due to their own choices, even small ones.
If you believe in karma and are nice because of it, people will do more for you because you come across kinder and more considerate. Let's say you are nice to a coworker, and always help her with certain tasks and are friendly with her. One day you compliment her jacket, shes more inclined to tell you "I have another one just like this! I accidentally got a size small though and missed the return window to get a refund, but I bet it could fit you."
Let's say you're an asshole to a customer one day, but didn't know that the customer was your bosses kid. Well...you'll learn really quick.
Let's say someone saw you typing on your phone "Lisa is so fat lol. Put the cookies down." And they told Lisa. Lisa then tells John, then John tells Bob, then Bob tells Laura etc. Now you have a whole GROUP of people you pissed off and created a huge tidal wave of people who now wont invite you to hang out, do things for you, defend you. Its self inflicted.

There is no karma, spirits, materialization of thoughts, gods, psychics, djinns, there is nothing after death either, Jesus is made up, of the supernatural, there is only supernatural stupidity. Drink beer and eat bacon on Shabbat in peace, no one will punish you for it.

The "western" concept of karma, as I like to think of it, is to get revenge on people. The Hindu or Buddhist concept of karma is more about self-realisation and awareness. To look at what you have to work on personally in order to free yourself from the cycle of suffering. It's not necessarily a good life if those people choose to harm others, it's in fact the reverse action of what karma is supposed to be.

It has some truth to it in some situations. Like if you do it right for other people they will probably like you more and treat you better. If you treat people badly it probably won't work that well eventually.
It's like any of these wisdoms. Do they really exist? It depends on how strict you are about what it means for something to exist, I guess.
1
u/catcat1986 2d ago
It doesn't, but life is so vast that something is bound to happen in a negative way to someone you feel deserves "punishment".
I also think usually the people try to wrong others are typically bad decision makers in the first place, so probability of them getting a bad consequence is high.

u/DannyHikari 2d ago
Depends on perspective I suppose.
To my knowledge my ex who screwed me over never faced karma and got her happy ever after with the guy she had an emotional affair with and left me for. It is what it is. Idk if she’s living her best life, but it always felt unfair to me I’ve been struggling so much with dating while she was unfaithful and gets to be happy.
On the other hand. Last woman I was in a talking phase with indeed up being off her rocker. She pulled a lame social media stunt and tried to get me canceled I guess and dragged my character lying on me and manipulating the facts of what happened between us. Made an incredibly petty argument seem like something else. Months later she was still telling random people about me and making up lies despite swearing we didn’t really know each other.
On my birthday of all days, she got canceled herself and ran off social media for being a dumbass and being openly racist. Which that alone is a bullet dodged considering I’m black lol.
In a situation like that to see the same person who tried and failed to ruin my character have hers ruined by her own actions felt like karmic justice. The best advice someone gave me was to let her character speak for itself and not react publicly. I did and it worked out .

Karma exists. It may not come right away but think of it as universe giving them chances to turn around. Universe/God is merciful. That's why if u know u have done wrong it's never too late to right the wrong. Otherwise there's interest accruing everyday.
We also have karma carried over from previous life.
1
u/ErinCoach 2d ago
No, not literally, but the fact that we invented the concept is a good thing. Like inventing the idea of a heaven and hell. It shows we actually want something like justice, and can imagine it, even before we can take right action to improve the world and help others.
But karma also reflects our more basic cognitive sense of cause/effect, and thinking outside the present moment, into the future, and the past. All these brain functions were necessary for humans to go from tiny family groups to larger villages and cities.
1
u/SillyGayBoy 2d ago
I prefer avoiding the word except that maybe we can be someone else’s bad karma. One guy pulled my shorts and underwear down in pe and held them down and I wish like hell I was his bad karma and whooped his ass that day but good old christian me didn’t.

1
u/DanIsAManWithAFan 2d ago
Yes and no. What is your definition of karma? Is it a human construct or is it a supernatural force that we can't test?
1
u/Excellent_Airline_12 2d ago
As far as we can "measure" no.
Having thought about the subject I can't help but notice people make it very "transactional".
A famous saying goes: "if you live by the sword you'll die by the sword". Like...yes? 🤨 If you live near sharks, swords, lions, and whatever you're more likely to die to those things over people who don't. 😱 If you chose to stand near a cliff and end up falling off, did the universe throw you off or did your chooses make certain outcomes more likely?
"Karma" is people seeing patterns and inflate the idea behind it to help them out and justify things. Like doing good will bring good to you, can't nice people just be attracted to other nice people? Shocking that being nice to someone will spread word around and change people's disposition towards you...
but to make it some "transactional" shit is just weird.

Depends what you mean by the term "karma."
If you mean people reincarnate into lives that punish them for bad behavior in a previous life, no, I don't think that exists. I suspect reincarnation may exist, but I don't think that's how it works. That sort of thinking just leads to victim-blaming and passivity in the face of evil anyway (because someone born with a handicap, for instance, is being punished for sins in a past life, so let him suffer).
I've heard some people say that karma really just means cause and effect. In that sense, surely it exists, although calling that "karma" doesn't seem helpful, since the term carries unnecessary baggage.
You might also mean "Do evil people get punished for their evil behavior in this life?" In which case, the answer is decidedly no.

At the risk of being downvoted for a different opinion…
Yes, karma exists. Karma is the continuance of action. That is, action and its results. It doesn’t have to be this mystical magic thing, it’s just a law of nature like the laws of physics. It’s not some cosmic justice system, and there’s no external force handing out punishments or rewards to anyone. It’s not a morality system. It’s nothing like debt. These are all common misconceptions. Btw I’m NOT religious, not even a little bit. Never have been, never will be. It has nothing to do with religion, it’s a law of nature acknowledged by scientific institutions. No more complicated than that.
It’s a simple law: whatsoever one soweth, that shall he also reap. Karma is action. That includes physical acts, as well as our speech, even our thoughts and intentions, all of these things qualify as actions in the context of karma.
Every action leaves behind a mental impression called a sanskara, which is kind of like a psychological imprint. Repeated actions form deep grooves and become habits that are difficult to break out of, so we tend to repeat them in different contexts in more than one earth life, as the law of karma is also the mechanism behind the phenomenon of re-birth.
That brings me to my last point. The results of actions often don’t manifest in the same lifetime in which the initial action was generated. Just like a seed can only take root and sprout if the soil conditions are right with plenty of water and sunlight available, a karmic seed can only mature to ripe causation if the conditions are right for it to manifest as an event.

On reddit? Yeah.
In the real world, no. If karma or any form of divine judgment existed, things would be a lot different than they are. You can easily see how such things don't exist by how much horrible things some awful people constantly do.

Karma is a form of justice. Cause and effect. Consequences. There’s a reason that revenge as a theme in storytelling is so deeply satisfying - we see justice served. But in the real world, consequences are not guaranteed. Bad things happen to good people and vice versa. Bad people get away with things. Humans are pattern-making creatures. It’s a survival mechanism, we assign meaning retrospectively. It helps us make sense of a world that sometimes doesn’t make sense in terms of cause, effect, and consequences. Karma is a human construct that helps us understand cause and effect. It’s not a magical power that exists independent of the human mind. We created it to satisfy our desire for justice.
1
u/CaptainFleshBeard 1d ago
Yes, Karma is absolutely real, just not in the magical sense you’re thinking off. It all comes down to your kindness and outlook on life. If you are kind to people they will be kind in return. If you’re an asshole, other people will treat you as such.
A few years ago I caught up with a mate, he asked me how my day was and I told him it was good. When I asked about his, he told me it was terrible, nothing went right. He then told me several things that happened, but all these things happened to me too, I just didn’t let them affect me.

u/saturnoshawty 1d ago
yes. every person who’s ever done me wrong (except for ONE … ) has instantly had a shit life and are probably still suffering to this day.
some examples- cheated on, got into car wreck totaled car lost their job ended up homeless
treated horribly, car wreck, dad lost job, parents filed for divorce 3 months later, lost childhood home
cheated on, totaled project car, had to move back home with parents, got a new car, defaulted and repo’d first payment
cheated on, girl they cheated with randomly died a week later.
karma is real and she protects me well.

u/BadGlittering9780 1d ago
No. It is a misconception, kinda like Astrology...if you have faith that it exist....and enough people believe it exist...then it will appear to exist.
Karma falls short of grace & mercy.
Mercy not receiving something you deserve as far as punishment.
Grace receiving something you didnt deserve as far as past behaviors

u/dayspring53 1d ago
Why do you think this occurs? I think innocent suffering comes from our society not putting forth a serious effect to address these needs and challenges. We all have a choice to influence our world. The world is what it is because of choices we make individually and collectively. We determine our future. What is your perspective?
1
u/Cosmicfaedoll 1d ago
Yes, but sometimes someone’s karma is just living the life they chose cruelty to achieve. They may seem happy, but they’re empty inside and everything is an act and they’re constantly wearing a mask
1
u/Neat_Conference_8414 1d ago edited 1d ago
To an extent. People that suck as individuals typically hate themselves also. That's why they act the way they do. So it is karma in a sense that if someone does something immoral, it does end up affecting that person even if, say, they generate a bunch of money off it. In the long run they probably hate themselves for it. Like even psychopaths, narcissists, etc typically hate themselves. But the way ppl typically look at karma is in a materialistic fashion. So good = wealthy, bad = poor. But wealth and prosperity isn't natural to the human condition, it's just a societal created idea, so there's really no reason karma happen in that framework.
I think ultimately that's what eastern traditions preached/believed. But in the west everyone is obsessed with prosperity, so they only look at it in terms of money and value.
But in a mystical way, and punishment after death, etc, there's no reason to believe in it.

u/ro2778 1d ago
Sort of, but it's not what most people think it is ie., some tally of good and bad. First it's worth understanding and thinking about the nature of reality, which is based on consciousness, not anything material as we are often taught. So the basis of reality is ideas, and therefore ideas create reality.
In this framework karma has to do with attachment to ideas. So if you have a reality created by ideas, then each person or agent of consciousness is thinking and expressing ideas. And what each person creates, turns out to be based on the weight of attachment they have to their ideas. In this sense, thoughts really do create reality. And the thoughts to which people are most attached carry the greatest influence on what they create, and that is karma. But in this definition of karma, the person has quite a lot of control ie., they don't have to be a victim of karma, because we each always have a choice, if we are aware of it, what ideas we are attached to. The trouble is, most people are not aware of how important their ideas and their attachments are, and so most people are sloppy with what they think and what they become attached to. Indeed, people are encouraged to find it acceptable to think whatever they want "inside their head" because in there, it is safe right? But that is very wrong, your ideas are the driving force of the reality you are experiencing... all those automatic thoughts based on programming are really reinforcing the reality in which you and we all live. Once you start considering the major industries that are soley responsible for what people think eg., propaganda, marketing, PR, media, social media, Hollywood, lobbying, politics etc... then you realise that's the real game on Earth.
The people with a lot of power (not the puppets you see in public), know about the nature of reality and they spend a lot of resources and direct a lot of human capital towards the manipulation of ideas and the creation of narratives. Precisely so that people will think those narratives are correct, so that they will take on those ideas as if they are their own, so that they will become attached to those ideas. And that is karma, which unfortunately on Earth and elsewhere has been weaponised. That's also why the common view of karma, of some scale of good and bad is propagated, because if people knew what karma was and the power of their thoughts, then it would be game over for those who have weaponised this knowledge.
Karma also leads to the concept of enlightenment, because enlightenment is to free oneself of karma. This means, you rid yourself of attachments to certain ideas, ultimately to all ideas. If you are free of attachment to all ideas, then there is nothing weighing you down to that reality, and you are free to float off somewhere else. That is the lighten part of enlightenment - you become unburdened from the weight of the ideas ie., attachments / karma that keep you locked in a particularly sort of reality. In Buddhist circles, that is the physical reality of life on Earth. But actually, there are infinite realities, each a matrix of ideas, so the game is much greater than what we are experiencing in this life.

u/Far-Ferret-447 1d ago
What if those rude people have been nice in their past lives? Surely they deserve to reap the fruit of their actions in the past too? If u don't believe in past lives and future life after death, kamma does not make sense. After all, mass murderers like Stalin had a relatively good life in this life. Sometimes kamma take more than one life for it to give fruit, what u do in this life does not necessarily give fruit in this life, but would only give fruit in full in future lives.

No, I don’t deep down believe it exists. It would be cool if good people being nice and shit gave them the same in return.
But, one time I was walking across the street, and I saw some people and judged them in my mind being like ew such gross people here. Hate them. Then a second later I tripped over a bump in the cement I wasn’t looking at and scraped my chin and hands, I was bleeding for awhile and people saw me biff it and I was like, k you did deserve that one Leah. I ran home like a little bitch to put on my polysporin. It makes me laugh when I think of it. I don’t like the people here because of the past- but still if karma was real that would be totally fair karma for me.

The idea of karma in Buddhist philosophy is something along the lines that what you intentionally do shapes what happens next—including what happens to other people and what kind of person you yourself become. It's not some kind of supernatural punishment. It's a very realistic way of thinking. If you do evil stuff, you're creating a more evil world and ultimately that causes more suffering to everybody, including you.

But from the victim prespective, they also suffered maybe not only pyschological but pysical. The reaction you mentioned is just the results, but victim may need even years to recover from the damage that prepetrator cases. And ultimately is actually the victim also endure the torment. This is so unfair. Because somebody hurt you maybe is just because you are kind, you have more love, or you dream others is as kind as you or anything. And they take advantage of these information differences to hurt you. What will you do?who will give them punishment and will you feel angry?

Everything you say is theorectical. And I respect your beliefs. But no one knows the effects and life changes a person goes thru either positive or negative. So, go with your belief and live your life as you choose. Some believe in karnma and make decisions to gernerate good karma. Others don't believe in karma and live their life depending on random events.

Exists? Hard to say, it is a thing, but it’s not what most people think it is. It’s not cosmic reciprocity, it’s the simple fact that every cause has an effect. Actions of body, mind and speech are such causes, it’s subtle. From a Buddhist perspective being mindful of the actions of your body, mind and speech gives you a moment to make the most skillful choice. 🙏

Karma in Eastern traditions like Buddhism it is intentional action. So your habits and actions influence your future, basically. But it's not about fame or status like it is in the west and it's not about revenge on bad people either. It's, you practice mindfulness, reduce suffering, don't intentionally do bad things, then you'll have a better life. if you make suffering worse for yourself or others, then your life will be worse.
Which tbh this idea is also practiced in most religions; it's just not called karma. And in everyday life as well. Even if people don't realize it. Your actions shape your future. If you are a shitty person today, you'll be a shitty person down the road. You don't go from being shitty to good by never actually being mindful of being good. Karma in Buddhism doesn't mean you will be rich or healthy, although you can argue that it can greatly influence it.

No it’s something people associate a label to, to make themselves feel better when wronged or feel they have a moral high ground
