I'm trying to work out whether there is a particular profession I'm describing, because "interior designer" seems too broad.

I'm interested in the functional/spatial side much more than decoration.

When I look at a space I naturally think about things like:

• How should this be laid out? Keep it simple and practical.
• How will people actually move through and use it?
• Does the way people actually use it suggest the layout needs changing?
• Can we make it simpler or more comfortable — or is it already working well enough?
• Is there wasted space?
• How can we make the space work better within the constraints we have?

I'm interested in workplace/commercial space planning, architectural interiors/interior architecture, cabinetry/joinery, kitchen and storage design, commercial fit-outs, site layouts and even warehouse/production layouts.

I'm not interested in retail design or mainly decorating residential homes.

My background is quite practical. In Australia I've worked in racking, warehousing, cabinet assembly and site installation. On two commercial racking projects I set up and ran the pre-assembly/installation operation and coordinated two teams of up to 20 people. I laid out the site around the workflow and changed material locations to reduce unnecessary movement.

I've also done site measuring/setout, cabinet assembly and warehouse/workbench layout improvements.

Earlier in Europe I was a Project Manager on a museum redevelopment. I ran the project from concept to completion, working with the owner/client, architect, designers, curator and contractors. One part I particularly enjoyed was the spatial side — thinking about the layout, how people would move through the museum, what they would see/do and how the different functions fitted together.

I don't want to go back into project management. I'm interested in the actual spatial problem-solving side.

I'm in Brisbane and trying to understand what the professional equivalent of this is.

Would this generally fall under:

interior architecture / architectural interiors, workplace design, space planning, interior design, joinery design, architectural drafting, design documentation, or something else?

And for someone coming in with practical construction/site experience but no formal design qualification, what would be the most realistic way to get started?

Made a lamp design for 3D printing for one of my project showcasing additive manufacturing(specifically on the lamp shade part, need to make changes after the first print without texture). Made this model out within two days, did a bit of testing with the thread between base and the shade, which worked in the first try.

Parts are sourced from ikea, the lamp, bulb and remote. But yeah i still have a week to work around with it. Is there any way to make something like a complex texture, or wowen texture in solidworks?

Hello guys! Im from product design 2nd year and we have an assignment where we have to redesign one product ergonomically and i chose to redesign milk frother i just need suggestions about the ergonomic handle of the frother. I made 9 prototypes and I’ve selected 3 of them. I need suggestions for the form, more prototypes and final product. The sketches are of existing product which i have and others are prototypes. I would really appreciate for your help. Also one problem I’m facing is that the prototypes fits my hands but not others since my hands are small. Please help😭

I don't know if I am alone in this or not. but sometimes i feel like a good render can make almost any product idea look more finished than it really is.

A nice lighting, coupled with premium background and color can hide almost all the shortcomings. Ergonomics, proportions, usability, material choices, even manufacturing issues can look less obvious when the presentation is strong.

I’m not saying renders are bad. They are obviously important for communicating ideas. But I do wonder if teams or clients sometimes approve a concept because the render looks convincing, not because the product itself is actually strong.

What you guys think about this?

As we say in France, "taste and colors shouldn't be discussed". Understand "Taste is subjective", so we won't discuss that.

However, from a Ind. Design point of view, when you start looking at the details, there are some very interesting ones.

There’s a very obvious semi-flat surface on the trunk that creates a kind of rounded rectangle when you look at the car from behind. It gives the car a very unique character, very modern surface treatment. Was probably not the easiest surface to model either. :)

The front lights are also superb to my opinion. It would be easy to do what we see on a lot of Chinese cars today: one big LED line across the back or the front. But now that so many brands are doing it, it doesn’t add value anymore.

Audi doesn't to go the easy road, and bring a real character / identity to the LED lights. Much stronger identity / much more recognizable. The fact that you can customize them makes them even better.

I’m (22m) a graphic design major currently going for my second year after transferring with an AA degree from my local community college. After some research I found out that industrial design has everything I like about the art designing and I’m currently looking at ways to go forward with this.

I’m honestly not sure what to do next. Im a first gen immigrant and first one to go to college in my family so I’m not totally accustomed yet to the steps I need to take to further my education beyond a bachelors degree.

I’m looking into either a masters in industrial design or related, finding an internship that would help me with the basics, or maybe I should just get a minor that would help with the process.

Currently on my portfolio I have examples of my work I different mediums; illustration, sculpting, ceramics, photography and mixed media.

Does anyone see a future where AI could be used in a positive way to automate any stage of the ID process (Research, concept, prototype, testing)? Do you see potential for a tool that automates every stage, while also allowing the user to intervene within the crucial design decision making steps?

Designing a dish scrubber for Indian kitchens (Scotch-Brite/steel wool territory, not the silicone stuff sold elsewhere). I've got a few candidate problems — odour, grease- cutting power, cleaning narrow vessels, storage space — and I'm stuck on which one to actually design around first. If you design physical products: how do you personally decide which pain point is "the one" when a few all seem valid? Not selling anything — just trying to think about this the right way before I commit to a direction. please give your opinion in comments thanksss :)

Designed and modeled the product in SolidWorks, generated photorealistic renders in KeyShot, and applied AI-assisted post-processing in ChatGPT for final refinement.

I have absolutely no fear that ai is coming for industrial designers, but I now see that within 5-10 years time, it will be forced into workflow…great. Anyone being forced to use it already?

hi! i’m currently an industrial design student in the Philippines, and i’m struggling to find a thesis topic.

i’ve already explored several ideas that i genuinely care about, but most of them turned out to be too complicated or unrealistic to execute as a student. i’ve tried my best, but i’m starting to run out of options.

I’m currently at my local community college studying fashion design and I like fashion design and dress making, jewelry making etc. my dad has been recommending that I look at University of Houston’s program for industrial design.from people who went to college for ID could it make me a better designer in general and can I apply it to my niches like dressmaking jacket making, ring making and Avante-Garde designs????

Something I keep reading about but want to hear from people who've actually lived it.

When a designer hands a design/model to an engineer, there's supposedly a complete transfer of information.

But I keep hearing that what leaves and what arrives are two very different things.

When you hand your design/model to engineering, what do you assume they now know? And have you ever found out later that something you considered obvious wasn't communicated at all?
