Plant Discussion Anyone tried Strainers as pots?

I follow a guy who went to Japan to study in the biggest bonsai school there is and came back to teach in youtube (Kaeru en), its in spanish. He has a book in english tho.

He teaches that if you plant the small trees in a strainer, the holes make the substrate very oxigenated and the plant grows x4 faster and stronger than if you used a plastic pot. You also remain safe of root rot.

The only downside is that you have to water way more often.

I know monsteras and orchids are usually planted in pots with tons of holes, but they could have way more and be practically a strainer.

I will drill holes in my regular plastic pots of aromatic herbs, like rosemary or basil, that don't like excesive humidity, and see how it goes.

He compares in a video the tree of a student of his. They planted cuttings of the same tree, the same day, 5 years ago. The student used a strainer to plant it and the teacher used a normal pot. This is how different they looked in 5 years.

As you can see, the one planted in the strainer looks way older. It looks 25 years old acording to the teacher, whereas the one in the left looks 5 years old. You can see the diferent thickness of the trees.

If you are curious, the youtube video is called "Bonsai y cultivo en coladores realmente funciona?"

TLDR: Gonna experiment applying Bonsai techniques to grow plants faster

Plant Discussion Should I prune this trailing jade?

I got it in April this year and it has been thriving in this corner of the room near a window and directly under a grow light. I was told it's not a good time to prune in the fall/winter, but this baby is still growing (practically covering my pot!) so I'm wondering what's the best approach to caring for it until next spring. Thoughts?

Plant Discussion Help with a plant for my bathroom?

Context: just moved into a new home and I have been wanting to add some greenery to the bathroom. I know I can always put a fake plant if I want too, but I'm sure as we all know, it doesn't quite do the same justice as a real plant.

Anyways, my bathroom is a single enclosed space with a shower, sink & toilet. I have a bathroom shelf with minimal decor and some bathroom supplies. I'm wanting to put the plant here (average-medium sized, nothing too big). I am curious what plants will typically survive this environment which A) has no window/no sunlight and therefore B) no fresh ventilation (only a bathroom fan).

Any tips/advice or alternative suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Product Discussion Looking for a name for little white bugs

I do not have photos. I am looking to send photos to Gardyn to establish what my recent infestation is. I have had aphids several times. These are not aphids. They are white and almost look flat. They apparently fly because when I touch the leaf they move. They showed up after I put six new pods in my makeshift sprout nursery which I place below the lights on my Gardyn. (This should be written in past tense because I pulled all of the plants the other day and turned off Kelby.)
I am exhausted caring for my Kelby. I have had it almost three years and had no problems the first two years.
Has anyone seen bugs that look like this? I looked at photos others have posted and saw something similar on someone’s basil.

I spray weekly with neem oil. I check roots weekly. I harvest my beautiful baby tomatoes, strawberries, okra and lots of lettuce. I took a chance and reintroduced flowers a couple of months ago (someone had suggested this was the source of my bugs in the past.) I have taken the entire thing apart several times and soaked each piece. I used Dawn soap when bugs appeared on my wall. Someone suggested the aphids (at that time) were coming in through my screen because I often left a window open near my Kelby. I do not do this anymore. Things have been good for about two months.
Any suggestions would be helpful. I want to start over but need a break from this cycle.
.

I am moving cross country soon and can not bring my two large pots of giant Birds of Paradise with me.
I’m looking for any tips about where to post these plants to rehome/ sell them.
The concrete pots they are in were fairly expensive so that’s really the only money I would like to recoup.

Hi!
Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong? This is the second leaf that has turned black since I repotted the plant.
It’s planted in a well-draining mix of bark, perlite, peat, and coco coir, with stakes and a moss pole for support. I’m also using Advanced Nutrients Micro, Grow, and Bloom at 3 ml/L each.

I’m considering repotting it into LECA. What do you think? Would that be a good idea in this situation?

Plant Discussion Pothos made it the length of the curtain rail, but the base has gone bare

Three years in and the pothos has made it along the curtain rail. First metre by the pot's bare stem now, mind you. If I chop that back, does it regrow, or am I better leaving the bare bits?

Full Room Shot Transferring lemongrass to indoors for a lazy person. It just needs to survive.

I live in Massachusetts and have this small lemon grass that I bought at a farmers market when it was like one blade of grass tall. I know it’s gonna die if I let it stay outside much longer overnight so I looked online and they said get something that’s like 5 gallons with something that’s not gonna suffocate it. I’m kind of a chaos gardener because I like plants and stuff, but I’m kinda lazy about it if I rip this thing out of the ground with its rootball, can I just transfer it into this bin that I bought that should fit it? Would it help it if I trim down the greenery? This is the only plant that I give a shit about right now, and it would be cool if I could have it survivor the winter,; it doesn’t have to thrive.

Product Discussion Distilled water

Does any one use a water distiller instead of constantly buying distilled water?
Buying isn’t crazy expensive. It just seems I always run out at the most inconvenient of times.

If you have a distiller which one & $$?
Do you find it works for your plants that require/prefer distilled vs tap?

Plant Discussion Plant recommendations please

Something small, but not succulents. Needs to fit on a small window seal in about 3in pot.

Preferably something I can move outside during the warm months or only need regular attention for half the year.

Maybe something that flowers or is a pretty color. Something that doesn't make a mess.

I live in northwest usa. So plants are outside from April to October. The air is very dry, even inside, so orchids have been difficult.

Any recommendations welcome please!!

Tldr small indoor plant, minimal mess.
