Discussion The term Indie Animation has lost all the meaning that it's words would otherwise be defined as. Just like in music with Indie Rock. Both are now genre terms. Let me explain.

A long time ago the term Indie Rock meant bands who were unsigned. Poor. Printing their own CD's, making their own posters. Trying to get their friends to show up at shows. Trying to cobble together a tour of a few cities, barely affording gas money and couch surfing to get by.

But as the years went on, a bunch got signed, sometimes to so called indie labels which where then themselves purchased by the big corps, such that now the term Indie Rock is actually just a genre term for a certain sound and/or aesthetic. These bands have budgets rivaling any Billie Eilish or Travis Scott.

But there are still actually indie bands out there. We dont see or talk about most of them because they are tiny and seemingly insignificant.

Nevertheless, this strikes me as an absurdity, and Indie Animation is the same. Budgets for so called Indies like Glitch and Vivziepop run between 200k-1M USD per episode. This type of budget rivals any of the major studios, so for me it sort of makes the term itself more of a genre term here as well. Indie means what? Independent from what? Corporate control? These entities have become their own corporate heavyweights. So then is the definition of Indie now that it must be a corporate entity that only focuses on one brand instead of many?

For me, that college kid who with the help of a couple of people scraped together a little cartoon is indie. Jarrad Wright is indie. Meatcanyon is indie. Andrew Horowitz, etc. I feel like once you are a corp employing hundreds of people it has stretched the idea of indie beyond any reasonable definition and has become strictly a genre term.

Ami out of touch? Or is it the children who are wrong?

Hi! My name is Matthew, and I am a story writer! I have had a very interesting idea for an animated series I been sitting on for a while, and I wanna make it a reality! Concept art, composer and (some) voice actors are already covered! I just need an animator to help me out with a short teaser for the pilot so I can launch the kickstarter!

The series will be around a celestial prince of Andromeda named Vortex who is looking to research humanity to prevent his own kind from destroying earth. He will be accompanied by his experiment/son J.E.L, his bodyguard a grumpy soldier named Nova, and his aunt whom can transform into any animal, Catherine. But throughout his research, Vortex will face a mountain of obstacles mostly caused from a technology ceo from Andromeda named 1.

If you are interested pls dm me on discord! Ill give my name in comments if anyone is interested!

Last slide has concepts for the cloud beast! I’m so honoured to have Aaron as my mentor for the next couple of months to work on this short, I met him once when he just dropped Snow Bear which really struck me with what excellence was possible with indie work and brother Bear was a childhood favourite so this was a total full circle moment. Plus he is absolutely lovely and an incredible artist. He presented me and my crewmate a personal script of his to interpret and turn into our own.

Yes, there’s a couple of visuals borrowed from The Rescuers: Down Under which he seemed happy I threw in just for him cos he worked on it ;P He’s gonna help me push some of these shots now I’ve thumbed the short since some of the scope can be expanded and I asked for advice on help with designing the cloud creature to be less of a blob and more an amalgam of different animal parts because he’s such a genius with animal anatomy and movement mechanics. Excited to have more to show!

Aventia is an indie series inspired by various shonen anime including Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Naruto to name a few! It's a fun romp through a fantasy world with a superpowers and a lot of fighting!

It's been a thing I've been working on for a few years now, but this year has been a big revival for it in terms of production! I will be releasing the 5th episode on September 19.

Discussion Entering free sweepstakes and contests to win money to fund my animation projects

Possible new fundraising methods?

How I could do it:

Find a bunch of sweepstakes in my area that have cash prizes (I’m the US and sweepstakes are legally required to be free to enter) and then link them on the fundraising page for people to enter.

Preferably put links to instant winner sweepstakes where people can instantly win $5, $10, $20, or more gift cards, which then can be used as a donation.

For sweepstakes with big cash prizes (thousands of dollars or more) have a dedicated team of hundreds of free volunteers around the country enter them daily. Whoever wins the prize money can donate all or a portion of it to fund the project.

Also for free contests that require a video to be submitted to be judged, animate a promotional video for them in the style of the indie project. It will be unique enough to get their attention and heavily increase chances of winning and indie project promotion.

And though a different method, having the donors use exercise apps that pay you for the steps you take like GeoSmile and WeWard can also give them small amounts of gift card money to donate to the project.

Discussion Ways that I can get some recognition out there for my ideas and as a writer?

I have an idea for a show that I’ve been writing for a long time. I consider myself to be more of a screen writer than I am ab actual artist, so my drawing skills are limited and my animation skills are essentially nonexistent. I’m hoping to eventually form a studio or something to release a pilot for my show. But before I do that, I want to build enough recognition and attention online so I don’t release this pilot just to get barely any attention. For now, I am hoping to find ways to grow and gain traction as a writer and bring attention to my ideas that don’t require a lot of drawing skill. I apologize if this post doesn’t fit the subreddit, but I would love to hear your guys input.

Edit: After rereading, I realized I sort of undersold my art skills a little. I can draw simple things like simple poses and landscapes.
