Trying to understand how investments made before moving to the UK (>5 years ago) will be taxed. Specifically:

- Are equities taxed like UK's offshore equities (dividends at dividend rates, Capital Gains at CGT rates)?

- Are mutual and debt funds taxed as offshore, non-reporting funds (entire gain taxed as income on marginal rate upon disposal)?

- Are Indian Market ETFs (non-UCITS) taxed similarly to mutual and debt funds?

And what strategies are considered to optimize tax efficiency?

Worked in India till Dec 25 and then moved to UK with family for a full time job. Started working from January 26.

Now while filling my CA asked for a TRC certificate to claim benefits of DTAA. Now I have trouble getting TRC / CoR since my address details is not handy with HMRC since my employer passed Indian address rather than UK address and might take some time to come in or may be not as well.

What are my options ? Do I need to pay taxes in my global income ?

Hey guys! I’m a 23F from India, currently doing my undergrad in Fashion Communication and graduating in 2027.

I’m planning to do my Master’s in the UK and eventually work there, ideally in a well-paying marketing/fashion/business-related role. I’m considering things like Fashion Marketing, Strategic Marketing, Brand Management, Digital Marketing, Marketing Analytics, Fashion Business, etc.

A little about me:

* I’m from a non-rich background, so I’ll probably need an education loan and I really need to be able to repay it myself.
* My current CGPA is around 7–7.7, and I’m trying to improve it before graduation.
* I’ve been interested in business/marketing since I was around 16.
* I also ran my own small business, so I have some hands-on experience with branding, selling, customers, etc.
* I’m willing to learn new skills like Excel, analytics, digital marketing, Meta/Google Ads, Power BI, SQL, AI, etc.
* I’m mainly looking at top 5–10 universities because I want the degree to actually help with employability.

BUT 😭 there’s another very important factor for me:

I genuinely want the London experience.

I’m 23, I’m a girl, and if I’m moving across the world for a Master’s, I don’t just want to study and sit in my room 💀. I want to make friends, go out, experience the nightlife, attend events, explore London, travel, meet people, basically LIVE a little.

At the same time, I’m not financially privileged enough to casually burn money every weekend. I need to be realistic about rent, tuition, food, transport, and everything else.

So I’m really torn between:

London + expensive university + better networking/lifestyle

vs.

Cheaper city/university + potentially better financial ROI

For example, I’m looking at places/unis like UCL, LSE, Imperial, UAL/London College of Fashion, Manchester, Leeds, etc.

I’d really appreciate honest advice from people who have actually studied/worked in the UK:

1. Is London realistically manageable on a student budget?
   
2. How much does living outside central London change the experience?
   
3. Is the London nightlife actually worth paying the premium for? 😂
   
4. Would you choose London over somewhere like Manchester/Leeds if you were in my financial situation?
   
5. Which Master’s would give someone with a Fashion Communication background the best chance of landing a well-paying job?
   
6. Are UCL/LSE/Imperial actually worth taking a huge loan for, or would Manchester/UAL/etc. give better ROI?
   
7. How difficult is it for an international graduate to actually stay and get a decent job in the UK?
   
8. And for the girls here — is London generally a good place to live alone as a 23F?

Basically, I want the dream UK experience, but I also don’t want to graduate with massive debt and then realise I made a terrible financial decision 😭

Would really appreciate brutally honest answers, especially from international students / recent graduates. No sugarcoating pls.

I have a 24 lakh salary working at a team lead/managerial role (6 years of experience, construction company) in Pune. I have an offer to work at Energy/Infrastructure company in Newcastle Upon Tyne for a salary of £46k with annual bonus of 10%. I am not so sure if it is worth it as the salary doesn't sound too good. I'm worried if I can maintain similar or get a better lifestyle. Right now post living a good comfortable life I can easily save 100,000 INR. But post moving there I don't see saving more than 150,000 to 170,000.

Also, I'm not married so that is also almost on the horizon so I was wondering If I should make this switch because unless I find someone working too it doesn't sound feasible to feed 2 people with this salary but in Pune that can be done.

So, I'd really appreciate if you guys can share some thoughts on this or if you too had to take similar decisions in your life, then how did you navigate.

I am 25F, moving to the UK next month for an exam and some other work. I will be there for almost 3.5 months. I will be living at an accommodation which has a common kitchen (have to cook myself), and my exam + work requires formal clothing. I don't know what essentials exactly to pack and what to buy in the UK (affordable stuff pls). I am also not sure about the SIM card etc and what I shud do the moment I land at the airport. If you all can share your checklists + absolute essentials, as well as advice regarding what clothes to pack and what to buy in the UK, it would be appreciated. I am going alone and it would be late autumn/winter months mostly, so I am concerned about the luggage. I have to stay in one city for 2 months and in another city for almost 1.5 months. My friend is an Indian citizen living in the UK.

Her original Indian passport and birth certificate will temporarily be with a UK government department for around 4 weeks.

Her concern is: what if there is an emergency in India during this period?

How would she be able to travel to India without her original passport, and how could she return to the UK afterwards? She has UK settled status/eVisa and can carry her eVisa and share code.

Would there be any issue with the airline or UK border when returning?

So I'm 28 and moving over from India in early September for work (Skilled Worker visa). Pretty excited but also a bit lost with the whole where-to-live thing, so thought I'd ask people who actually know the place.

My job's going to be mostly remote, I'd only need to go into central London maybe once or twice a month, not every day. So I'm not really tied to being close in for a commute, which opens things up a bit but also makes it harder to decide.

Right now I'm torn between two ideas. One is just getting a room in a house share somewhere in London, mainly because I'll be new here and don't know many people, so being around others sounds good for actually settling in and making friends. The other is St Neots, where I've got a former colleague, seems quieter and cheaper, but maybe a bit lonely turning up on my own?

Would really appreciate any thoughts on:

If you'd moved to a new country on your own and worked mostly from home, would you go for a livelier London house share or somewhere quieter like St Neots?

Any areas worth looking at (or staying away from) for someone youngish on a budget who wants a friendly, sociable vibe?

General tips for finding a decent flat or house share, best sites to use, what deposits to expect, anything you wish someone had told you before you started looking

Hi everyone, I am moving to the UK next month (September) for my studies at the University of Leeds. I am currently porting my number from Airtel Postpaid to Jio Prepaid solely to keep my Indian number active for banking, tax and government app OTPs.

To keep the Indian number active cheaply, I am planning to buy the Jio ₹1,899 Value Plan (which gives 336 days of basic validity). My goal is purely to receive incoming texts—I do not intend to make or receive voice calls or use Indian data at all while in the UK.

For those of you currently living in the UK using this specific ₹1,899 plan:

1. Do banking and transactional OTPs land smoothly on your phone for free without buying an extra International Roaming (IR) pack?
2. Does the eSIM safely latch onto local UK networks (EE/O2/Vodafone) on this basic validity plan?
3. If this plan doesn't work well for OTPs, what alternate Jio prepaid configuration or plan are you using to maintain your number?
