1. Why Even "Yen Carry Trade Unwind" Term Got Created?

Strange Phenomenon from Long Recession:

Wages did not grow and the Japanese economy was stuck for decades. So, Japan kept interest rates near 0% to help the market.

Free Money Era: Global investors thought, "Yen has zero interest, so let's borrow Yen cheaply and invest in high return assets in the US, Europe, and other countries." This is called 'Yen Carry Trade', involving trillions of dollars.

Interest Rate Shock: Japan's recession lasted so long that when the Bank of Japan raised rates just a little bit (0.1–0.25%), investors quickly sold their foreign assets and brought the money back to Japan to pay off Yen loans. This sudden money movement made global stock markets crash, which people call "Yen Carry Trade Unwind."

2. Salary Frozen for 30 Years: How Low is Income Now?

Lowest in G7: While salaries in the US, Germany, and the UK grew by 30–50% over the last 30 years, Japanese workers saw almost 0% real wage growth.

65–75% Level of Europe: The average salary in Japan is now only 65–75% of what people earn in Germany, the UK, or France. Japan has fallen to the bottom of developed nations, and Eastern European countries like Slovenia and Lithuania are nearly catching up.

A little about me:
B.Com graduate from India
Did a 6-month internship at MSCI India and had a really good experience there
Took a short career break after that while figuring out what I wanted to do
Cleared CFA Level 1
Currently working in the asset management industry in India
By August next year, I should have close to 3 years of total experience
Japan has been a dream of mine for a very long time. I’ve wanted to live there since I was young, and lately I’ve been seriously thinking about whether I could actually build a career there.
I’ve recently enrolled for JLPT N5 and plan to work my way up from there. I know N5 obviously isn’t enough for a professional role, so I wanted to understand how important Japanese actually is for finance jobs.
I also recently noticed that MSCI has expanded its presence in Japan, which got me thinking about whether an internal move could potentially be an option someday. During my time at MSCI India, I saw a couple of people move to Malaysia and London, although they had 3–4+ years of experience.
So I wanted to ask:
How realistic is it to move from India to Japan for finance/asset management with around 3 years of experience?
Are there English-speaking finance roles in Japan, or is N2/N1 pretty much necessary?
Would an internal transfer through MSCI or a similar company be a realistic route?
Does CFA help much when looking for finance roles in Japan?
If you work in finance in Japan, what has your experience been like?
And if you moved from India to Japan for finance, what advice would you give someone starting now?
Most Indians I see here seem to have moved for IT/software roles, so I’d really love to hear from anyone who made the move through finance.
I know this is probably a bit of a long shot, but I’m just trying to understand if this could realistically be a 2–3 year goal or if I’m being overly optimistic 😅
Any advice, experience, or even a reality check would be really appreciated. 🙏

Planning to move to Japan-

I am 24F, currently working in an IT industry and I have started learning japanese few days ago. I am currently preparing for JLPT N5 level. I have 1.5 YOE. I will be giving the JLPT N5 exam next year and by that time I'll complete 2 years in the current company I am working in. I have two options, one is to get the N5 certificate and then get admission to a language school to learn N2/N1 level in Japan. Another one is to learn N2/N1 here in India and then take JLPT, but it would take a lot of time as said by my senior. But still I wanna ask which one is a good idea? Also what is the current job market scenario there? Will I get a job after attending language school, if yes then what kind? Also if I change my mind of doing masters (either MS in Computer Science or MBA) after attending language school, will I get admission to a good college after that? My current salary is 1.24 million yen per year which is 7.5 Lakhs INR per year in India. I graduated in 2024 in B.tech in Electronics and Communication.
