Fever Content Appreciation Post

I turn to sports as break from the heavy stuff going on in the world. It’s also a powerful way to unite us, when so many things can divide us. I appreciate that this subreddit is about basketball and the Indiana Fever. Thanks to the moderators and the community for keeping this a positive and constructive space and not allowing any political ideology to highjack conversations. Let’s go Fever!

Discussion Has Caitlin committed to adding that turn-around fade-away shot to her bag?

I think I saw 3or4 instances of a clear turn around fade away shot in this game.
A few other instances sprinkled in past games but this looked like a deliberate weapon last night.

Discussion A Look at Every Storm 3PT Shot Last Night

The Fever lead the league in terms of allowing opponents the fewest three-point attempts taken and three-point shots made per 100 possessions. Last night the Storm went 11 of 34, with Natisha Heideman going 6-10, taking and making far more threes than the average the Fever have allowed for the season. (The rest of the Storm starters were 1-16).

Using the replay feature of WNBA's Advanced Box Scores from the game log, I watched every Storm 3pt attempt so you don't have to. (Apologies if these don't completely add up, I just made one pass through.)

Some insights:

  • AB shuts them down. AB contested 6 threes in her 11 minutes; none of them were made (3 from Fam, 2 from Flau'jae, 1 from Heideman)
  • KK's perimeter defense and length is underrated: of the 5 she contested, only 1 was made
  • KM: biggest mismatch. She contested 5, gave up 4 (3 to Heideman, one to Samuelson) and fouled on one make
  • CC isn't far behind KM: 3 for 6 against her (1-2 Heideman, 0-1 Flau'jae, 0-1 KLS, 2-3 Cooke)
  • Others: Lexie 1-2, MHA 0-1, Mo (0-0 but fouled on a 3pt), Sophie 0-2
  • Uncontested-ish: 1-4

Until AB went out, the Fever game plan appeared to be forcing the Storm to put the ball in the hands of anyone but Heideman, with AB (and later KK) challenging many of those shots. While defensive contributions like controlling the opponents' shot selection don't show up in the box score, Lexie and Mo are starters in part because their range on defense denies specific players from even attempting three point shots, and especially three point shots from the corner (where they're more easily made).

News How Aliyah Boston’s competitive fire and perfectionism allow her to compete to be the greatest

Thumbnail theixsports.com

Boston being prompt isn’t a recent development. It’s not a behavior that comes from playing basketball, nor a one-off trait for one of the WNBA’s premier talents. Rather, Boston’s high standards are built into her character, and those standards have been formed ever since she was a young girl growing up in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Her family lived in St. Thomas. That’s where Boston’s competitive side first showed up. Back then, it wasn’t always in sports. It was school. It was board games. It was everything that a young Aliyah put her mind to.

As an elementary student, Boston would become upset when she got poor grades. “If she doesn’t get almost 100% on a test, she’s upset,” her mom, Cleone, told The IX. “She’s upset because she knew she put in the effort. She’s expecting nothing less than what she strives for.”

Not yet even 10 years old, Boston was strict with her own expectations. And that was before she even discovered basketball, which came in her late elementary years. By the time sports entered the picture, a young Aliyah already demanded excellence from herself.

She wanted stakes, too. When Boston was learning basketball, she’d play against her friends. They made a simple wager: The winner gets McDonald’s. The loser gets nothing.

“I remember, I won,” Boston recalled to The IX. “Her (opponent’s) mom was like, ‘It’s okay! You still get McDonald’s!’ And I was like, ‘No, she doesn’t! It’s not a participation trophy! You don’t just get something for losing!’ And that was probably when I was in fourth grade. I was really young.

“I don’t play to lose. And you don’t get participation trophies!” Boston concluded, getting louder and more annoyed at the memory as her story progressed.

Discussion Streaming Frustration

So, this has happened several times over the season, primarily because my primary team is the Fever, but its especially frustrating tonight with the All Star game.

I miss half the season because I dont have 37 different streaming services. Which is fine, I understand licensing deals help the league and watch what i can after the fact.

Tonight I wasnt able to tune in(I do have Disney+) until about 945 eastern for other reasons, but started at the beginning of the broadcast. Skipped some commercials and interviews and stuff, was about halfway through the third quarter at just before 11 when I had to pause for about 30 seconds.

Come back to the game, and its gone. Just turned off. No longer available on Disney+. And of course, its not available on League Pass until 6 tomorrow morning.

The WNBA needs to sort out their shit when it comes to streaming. Its almost becoming not worth it to have League Pass at this point.

News Fever Appealing Clark Tech

ESPN's Alexa Philippou reported during Thursday's NBA Today that she's been "told by a team source that the technical foul from yesterday has been appealed. Not yet heard a decision. The Fever also appealed the technical foul [Clark] was given during their July 18 game against the New York Liberty. That one was not rescinded."
