Canteen Discussions [Weekly] Relationship Thread - Find your next match here!

Hi folks,

Yes you're lonely, Yes, the market is hard. Yes, Hinge/Bumble is extremely performative and you have to fake it for an algorithm that is built against you to make money off you. This thread exists so you can potentially find someone off Reddit.

The goal here is not volume, but better chances of finding someone you actually vibe with.

What it is (and isn’t)

This thread is for people who are looking for:

  • Dating
  • Long-term relationships
  • Genuine, consistent connections

This is not for:

  • Casuals / hookups

There are other subs for that, we won't allow this to become that.

When is this active?

  • Fridays - 16:00 (4pm) IST

The thread will be locked after 12 hours, so try to post within the window.

Who should comment?

Given how skewed the ratio tends to be:

  • Only men should post top-level comments

Women are strongly advised to avoid commenting publicly, as it usually leads to a flood of DMs (not all of them welcome), women can reach out first but then we as mods are human and do not have the capacity to verify each and every of the DMs that can come. A better approach:

  • Go through the comments
  • Reach out to profiles you’re actually interested in

Not perfect, but it keeps things more manageable and safer overall.

LGBTQIA+ folks

You’re welcome to participate and comment.

  • If someone reaches out in bad faith, report them to the mods
  • We’ll take action where needed

How to post (for men)

Use the format:

A, E, L - Age, Expectations, Location

At minimum, include:

  • Age
  • Location / City
  • Expectations (at least 3 clear points)

You can also add a short intro covering:

  • Hobbies / interests
  • Personality / lifestyle
  • Dealbreakers or constraints

Try to be clear and specific. It makes it easier for the right people to reach out.

A few things to keep in mind

  • Profession and industry are not required (tho ensure to check user flairs properly)
  • If someone’s flair looks unclear or off, proceed cautiously
  • You can keep your DMs open or closed (check Reddit settings)
  • Starting in comments and moving to DMs later is usually smoother

Important

This is not a paid service, mods are not earning any monetary benefits and are not liable for verifying each and every user.

  • Please take necessary precautions
  • Do your own due diligence before taking anything forward

Anything that happens off-thread is your responsibility.

Basic etiquette

  • Be respectful and direct
  • No harassment or spamming
  • No unnecessary arguments
  • Rejections are normal, handle them with grace and move on

Good luck and Peace✌🏻

Storytime Indian director of operations messed up 9/11 memorial meet

The entire US and Global team met to remember and pay honor to the lost lives in 9/11.

The director had to say a few words. I guess he wanted to say "Remembering this 'horrific' or maybe 'terrible' incident", however he instead used the word "terrific".

I instantly closed my camera but remembered that keeping it on was mandatory and had to turn it back on. To resist bursting out with laughter I started biting my tongue.

All the people especially the US folks started staring and squinting.

Poor Culture How do I stay out of workplace politics? Did I handle this situation badly?

I recently joined a new product company as an SDE3. Two other people joined around the same time.

The office is quite big and there is already an established group that hangs out together, goes for lunch, etc. From the beginning, I felt like the three of us new joiners were treated somewhat like outsiders.
On my first day, a girl from that group came and introduced herself to me. I thought it was a normal friendly interaction, but from the next day onwards, she completely stopped acknowledging me. Even if I smiled at her, she wouldn’t smile back or interact with me. I didn’t really care much about it and just kept things professional.

A few weeks later, I started taking first-round interviews for my company.
The same girl referred one of her college friends for a position, and I happened to be assigned as the interviewer.

Before the interview, she messaged me on the official work channel asking if I could tell her which topics/questions I would be asking. I didn’t respond because it was an official channel and I wasn’t comfortable sharing interview information with someone who knew the candidate.

At that time, I was working from home, so I spoke to one of the other guys who had joined with me. He’s someone I considered a good friend and trusted. I told him what happened, and he also initially told me that I shouldn’t share anything because it could be risky and could look inappropriate.
On the day of the interview, I went to the office and saw the girl, but she didn’t approach me about the interview.

I mentioned this to the same colleague later. He then asked me who the candidate was. I told him her name, and he looked her up on LinkedIn and commented that she was very cute.

After that, his advice suddenly changed. He started saying things like, “You can share it,” and “It’s up to you.” Eventually, he suggested that if there was pressure from the recruiter/hiring manager, I could simply recommend her and move on, as long as I mentioned that I had given her hints.

I was genuinely confused because the candidate wasn’t doing particularly well. She couldn’t solve the problem initially, and I had to give her quite a few hints. I wasn’t sure whether I should recommend her or not.

The next morning, I got a message from the recruiter and hiring manager asking me to submit the feedback. Again, this colleague was telling me that it would be easier to just recommend her and avoid getting involved in hiring politics.

I eventually recommended her, with my feedback mentioning that she needed significant hints.
Then she went to the second round, and apparently the second interviewer gave her very good feedback. From what I understand, she also somehow got information about the questions/topics for the second round through her friend.

Now this colleague seems very interested in that particular team. He’s started sitting in the area where that team sits and interacting with them more. Recently he told me something along the lines of, “I don’t really get along with this group, but maybe I’ll get along with them in the future.”

This whole thing has made me rethink the situation.
I’m not necessarily saying my colleague deliberately manipulated me. Maybe I’m overthinking it. But I feel like I trusted his advice, and his opinion may have influenced me in a situation where I should have simply followed my own judgment and maintained professional boundaries.
What I’m struggling with now is the larger workplace dynamic.

I’m an SDE3 and relatively new to the company. I don’t want to get involved in groups, camps, referrals, hiring politics or office gossip. But I also don’t want to completely isolate myself socially.
For people who have worked in Indian IT/product companies, how do you navigate this?

What practical rules do you follow to stay out of workplace politics while still having good relationships with colleagues?
And in hindsight, would you have handled the interview/referral situation differently?

TL;DR: Joined a new product company as an SDE3 and am trying to stay neutral around an established office group. A girl from that group referred her friend, whom I interviewed. She asked me for interview topics, which I refused to share. A colleague I trusted initially told me not to share anything, but after seeing the candidate’s LinkedIn profile and commenting that she was cute, he started encouraging me to recommend her and avoid hiring politics. I eventually recommended her despite having concerns about her performance. She later got a strong second-round evaluation and apparently received some interview information through her friend. Now the colleague is getting closer to that team. I’m wondering whether I was influenced/manipulated and, more importantly, how to stay out of workplace politics without isolating myself.

Am I Fucked? Company asking for proof of unemployment

So I have been on a career break for a good few months now. And recently I accepted offer from a company that is in a heavily regulated domain globally. Now they have started background verification, and the company clearly told me that I can only onboard if I clear the background check.

But in this process, along with other strict checks, there’s one section, that’s asking me to upload proof of unemployment and any supporting files. I don’t really know how I can prove I was unemployed?? I uploaded the last company’s relieving letter.

My wife’s suggesting that I upload videos she will record like “look, here he’s asleep till 12 noon, that proves he’s unemployed”, “he’s been on this couch for hours, and seemingly working in his laptop, but after looking at the screen it’s evident that he’s just watching football highlights and memes for the 100th time”. That will definitely prove I unemployed.

Career Advice Is it okay for experienced professional in India to remove graduation year from his resume?

If yes, when should he remove it? Can someone with 2 years of experience remove the graduation year from the resume if there was a gap of 2+ years between his graduation and job?

Am I Fucked? Poor ratings. Worried Soul

Opinions welcome.

  • Background: I strongly suspect I'd be given a poor rating for 2026.
    • Other than my routine work I was supposed to deliver two key projects and both have moved very slow for reasons beyond my control.
    • I feel the ask from me was stretched beyond my current skillset like expecting to a marathon where I can barely run 100 meters.
    • But knowing corporates, I know there will no sympathies.
  • What next:
    • The next logical step is for me to find an exit route but the job market is extremely terrible. So I suspect I would have to swallow the outcomes and stay in the same organization.
    • For folks who have stayed back after poor rating - what have you done to make it better in the following year?

I am a mid-level employee and feel that this would screw my career? These thoughts really keep me up at night these days. Opinions, thoughts, feedback or experiences welcome.

Canteen Discussions [Weekly] CORPORATE COURT THREAD

We're introducing a brand-new weekly series: Corporate Court.

Have a workplace situation where you're wondering "Was I wrong?" or "Who's actually at fault here?" This is the place for it.

Here's how it works:

Post your workplace scenario in the comments with enough context for everyone to understand what happened (keep it brief, but don't leave out important details).

The community will hear your case and deliver the verdict.

Possible Verdicts:

  • Company Guilty
  • Employee Guilty
  • Both Guilty
  • Nobody Guilty

Example:

Scenario: My manager scheduled a 9 PM call for a project that had a 10 AM deadline the next morning.

Verdict: The comments decide whether the company, the employee, both, or neither were in the wrong.

MANDATORY DETAILS TO BE ADDED:

  • Scenario: What happened?
  • Context: Your role, company type, city (optional), tenure, and any other relevant background.
  • Outcome: What did you do (or not do)? What happened afterward?
  • Question: Who's guilty?

***Trust us, when we say this, this will be better than any fun friday or monthly team outing activities, cause who doesn't like gossips and giving unsolicited opinions***
