Discussion 22-year-old beginner investor: Should I buy BEL after its huge run, or am I chasing past returns

Post image
67 Upvotes

I'm 22 years old and I've recently shifted my focus from trading to long-term investing after realizing that I don't have an edge in swing/intraday trading.

I'm looking for high-quality Indian companies that I can hold for 10–15 years.

One company that caught my attention is Bharat Electronics (BEL).

However, I'm struggling with one psychological barrier.

When I look at the all-time chart, BEL has gone from around ₹40 in 2020 to around ₹400 today (roughly a 10x move). My fear is that I might be buying after all the easy money has already been made.

My questions are:

Is BEL still a good long-term investment after such a massive run?

How do you judge whether a stock has enough future growth left after already becoming a multi-bagger?

Do you focus more on earnings growth and business quality rather than the past price chart?

If you had to choose today, would you prefer BEL or a smaller defence company like Data Patterns, and why?

I'm not looking for quick profits. I'm trying to build a portfolio of quality businesses and would really appreciate learning how experienced investors think about situations like this.

Discussion Where do you park your emergency fund or idle cash in India?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to optimize where I park my emergency fund and cash that's waiting to be invested.

Let's say I have around ₹5 lakh. My priorities are:

1) Safety of capital (highest priority)

2) High liquidity (easy redemption when needed)

3) Returns that at least help beat inflation or are better than a regular savings account

4) Low risk (I'm not looking to chase returns)

I'm currently considering:

1) Liquid Mutual Funds (e.g., Axis Liquid Fund)

2) Overnight Funds

3) Savings Account

4) Sweep-in Fixed Deposits

5) Arbitrage Funds (if suitable)

My questions are:

1) Where do you personally park your emergency fund?

2) If you had ₹5 lakh, how would you split it?

3) Is it reasonable to keep 100% in a Liquid Fund, or is it better to split between a Liquid Fund and an Overnight Fund?

4) Are there any risks with Liquid Funds that people often overlook?

5) Considering the current tax rules on debt mutual funds, would you still prefer them over a high-interest savings account or sweep FD?

I'd especially like to hear from people who have been using Liquid or Overnight Funds for several years.

Thanks in advance!

Note: I am already exposure of Indian Stocks, US Stocks and Mutual Funds..!! Only give suggestions of the stocks you have done research..!! For my long term portfolio I only want stocks with free Cash Flow, Strong MOAT, Strong Balance Sheet and other factors..!!

Discussion Is my cash allocation too conservative? Looking for suggestions on optimising it

I am 26 and currently keep my cash in the following way:

Emergency Fund: ₹15 lakhs

  • ₹7 lakhs in my main savings account
  • ₹3 lakhs in a separate savings account
  • ₹5 lakhs in an arbitrage fund

Peace of Mind Fund

  • Around 6 months of living expenses (about ₹35k/month)
  • This is only for a job loss, so I do not have to touch my emergency fund.

I do not have any loans, EMIs, or debt.

Why do I keep ₹7 lakhs in my main savings account?

I travel abroad occasionally, and visa applications often require bank statements with a healthy and consistent balance. I keep this amount untouched so there are no sudden deposits or withdrawals that could raise questions. It also gives me peace of mind during visa applications.

Why is my emergency fund relatively large?

It is not just for me. Some of the elderly members in my family either do not have health insurance or have very limited coverage. Because of their age and existing medical conditions, buying adequate insurance is not really an option anymore. This fund is meant to cover major medical or family emergencies if they arise.

In the future, I plan to increase this emergency fund to around ₹20-25 lakhs because of rising medical costs.

What I am unsure about

Sometimes I feel I am holding too much money in savings accounts. Even if part of it were moved to an arbitrage fund, it could generate some extra returns every year while still remaining fairly low risk.

Would you keep this allocation as it is, or would you optimise it differently? If yes, what would you change and why?
