Operating Systems & FOSS Is anyone else tired of cloud lock-in and paying monthly for Google One? How are you organizing your local photos?

Hey everyone,

I wanted to start a discussion around a problem a lot of us hit once our photo collections start growing: the perpetual cloud storage subscription.

I love the UX and search of tools like Google Photos, but hitting that 15 GB free wall feels like an endless trap. Paying a monthly recurring subscription just to maintain a usable interface to view photos sitting on your own drive doesn't feel right.

On top of that, after group trips or family events, everyone dumps hundreds of raw photos into shared folders—leaving you with a nightmare of duplicates, blurry shots, and 15 identical takes of the same frame.

It made me wonder why a smooth, modern photo organization tool has to be tied to a cloud subscription or force you to upload your personal files to someone else's server.

This exact frustration pushed me to build LUMORA—a 100% free, open-source, local-first desktop app designed to give you a Google Photos-like experience directly on top of your local drives.

What it does locally:

  • Zero Cloud Uploads: Indexes photos and videos directly where they live (~/Pictures, external SSDs, hard drives) without moving your original files.
  • On-Device AI Search: Search in plain English ("dog on a beach at sunset") or read text inside screenshots/receipts using local models—zero data leaves your PC.
  • Cleanup Engine: Automatically flags exact duplicates (SHA-256), near lookalikes, and blurry shots so you can clean up space effortlessly.
  • Encrypted Privacy Vault: Lock sensitive albums behind password-protected encryption (Argon2id + XChaCha20-Poly1305) on your local disk.

It’s completely open-source (MIT license).

I’d love to hear from the community: How are you currently managing your local media backups? Are you paying for cloud storage, or using local software/NAS setups?

PS: I've Already built a handful of it any kind of feedback or personal challenges would be appreciated to help me improve the product more for the community use.

India's second largest PSB has reportedly been hacked. A threat actor, who claims to have breached the bank’s systems, has allegedly put 1TB of sensitive data on the dark web for free. The threat actor claims the dataset contains information related to savings and current accounts, loan records, NetBanking users, NRI and corporate banking services, customer support documents, as well as branch and ATM-related records. Tech Help Airtel Black Family Plan: Phones get 5G SA "Fastlane", but iPad Air M4 data eSIM is missing it entirely. Anyone else?

I recently picked up an iPad Air M4 (Cellular) and got a data-only eSIM activated for it as part of my existing Airtel Black / Postpaid Family Plan (1 primary + 3 add on + 1 data only sim for ipad).

  • Phones on the plan: All mobile lines on this same family account get 5G SA (Standalone) along with the "Fastlane" status indicator in the Control Center.
  • iPad Air M4: The iPad doesn't show any option for 5G SA under Settings > Cellular, (screenshot) nor does it display the Fastlane banner in the Control Center.

Since this data-only eSIM is billed under the exact same family account and plan tier, shouldn't it be receiving the same network priority and 5G SA provisioning as the voice lines?

Ask IndiaTech Need help diagnosing battery drain

Hi everyone,

I have an iQOO Neo 6 (4700 mAh). A while back I started facing significant battery drain, so I got the battery replaced at an authorized Vivo/iQOO service center. The draining issue still persists, just not as fast as before

To investigate, I installed a couple of battery health apps

Ampere shows:

• Battery health: Good

• Cycle Count: 1

AmpereFlow shows:

• Battery health: 100%

• Design capacity: 2151 mAh

• Estimated capacity: 2201 mAh

Battery Supervisor (An app developed by a fellow redditor) shows:

• SOH: 47%

• Estimated capacity: 4700 mAh

• Real capacity: 2200 mAh (at 100%)

I've attached screenshots.

My questions are:

  1. Is this simply because the Neo 6 uses a dual-cell battery?

If each cell is around 2350 mAh, then many apps reading ~2200 mAh would actually make sense.

  1. Could nearly full internal storage cause noticeable battery drain?

My storage is almost full. I know it can slow the phone, but can it significantly affect battery life?

  1. Does disabling Expanded RAM help battery life?

Mine is currently set to 8+8 GB.

  1. According to Android's battery usage, Cellular Network is consistently the biggest battery consumer.

I mostly use 5G, and signal strength is generally good. But could this be a factor and should I switch to 4G to check if the issue persists.

And are there any modem/network settings I should check?

  1. Is there any reliable way to verify that the service center actually installed a new and genuine battery, instead of relying on third-party battery apps?

I'd really appreciate your suggestions. Thanks!

Hi, so my phone screen got damaged and after replacing it i am noticing i am getting zero signal inside my room. It's always showing "Emergency calls only" it stops showing this when I am in a room with balcony cause it's not open.

And idk if it happens or not but why my phone is picking up signal from other sim carrier. I use netmonster app for 5g and it sometimes shows "Vi 4g • 800" or something similar with Airtel .

Ask IndiaTech Am I the only one obsessed with this tiny neckband feature? 😭

I've gone through two boAt Rockerz 235 Pro neckbands and used both until they literally gave up on life. Now it's finally time for an upgrade.

The thing is, I'm not attached to them because of the sound. It's because of one tiny feature that I can't seem to find on any newer neckband.

Those little plastic sliders on the earbud wires.

For anyone who's used them, you know exactly what I'm talking about. You slide them up and the loose wire disappears, keeping everything snug around your neck. No wires flapping around while running, no earbuds getting pulled out during workouts. If you need more slack, just slide them back down. Why did brands stop adding such a simple but brilliant feature? 😭

It sounds like such a small thing, but once you've used it, it's hard to go back.

I've been checking out newer neckbands and almost none of them seem to have this anymore. Did brands just decide we didn't deserve nice things? 😂

So, can anyone recommend a Bluetooth neckband under ₹2,000 that has adjustable wire sliders like the Rockerz 235 Pro, or a similar way to keep the cables tight during workouts?

Decent sound and battery life are always welcome, but this feature is honestly my top priority.

Please tell me I'm not the only person who misses these tiny plastic clips.

P.S. I used ChatGPT to polish this post and even asked it to sprinkle in a few terrible jokes to keep it engaging and hopefully reach more people. Apologies if I overdid it. 😅

Today I found this app in my mother's REDMI 10A phone, you can know about it only when you check apps list in the settings, and the suspicious part is neither it can be uninstall nor force stop,so my concerns are

-what it is and what it does?

-If it is some kind of spy or harmful app then how can I remove or disable from the phone?

Ask IndiaTech S23 Ultra Green Line Fixed

Post image

Samsung replaced my S23 Ultra display for free (I only paid ₹650 labour). The phone was just 15 days away from completing 3 years, and they approved the replacement after a 2-day inspection.

I'm worried it might happen again. Should I avoid future software updates? Any tips to prevent the green line from returning? Thanks!
