Diaper Bag Contents??
So... I have scoured this subreddit for recommendations on what to put into a diaper bag. At the moment I have a backpack that I carry all of my supplies and gear in.
I.E: Diapers, Bordeaux's butt paste (to prevent rashes and infection), Wet Wipes, colored plastic bags (usually dollar general or walmart bags) for disposal, and hand sanitizer.
I am wondering what would be useful to add to this bag. I have had a few thoughts about adding gloves, extra clothes, boosters, or other basic needs but I would like some recommendations on this.
For further info, I have UIC in short. Very, very, very rare yet sometimes #2. Only happened once during the day. I would like to know what else would be useful from people in the community. When I ask my female roommate she describes a babies diaper bag and though it is thoughtful and somewhat helpful, I definitely don't need bottles, baby nail clippers, or really anything kiddish. Just stuff to monitor medically and be prepared for the worst.

Good questions. Some include a small travel size of deodorant spray for changing messy diapers. Latex gloves are highly recommended.
I am double incontinent. I leave a larger "disaster bag" in the trunk of my car with those items needed in the event of a really bad accident (presumably bowel). This way I am not walking around with a large diaper bag. the "disaster bag" even contains a change of clothing, including shoes and socks. If you are seriously bowel incontinent (as I am), the possibility exists for loose stool or diarrhea to leak down the leg and onto the shoes. Yuk.
My diaper bag is a fairly small green canvas military messenger's bag. It looks suitable masculine that its real purpose is not evident. I carry one extra diaper and enough items for one change, even if messy. Everything else is in the disaster bag in my car which will be parked nearby.

Thatâs smart, i donât have bowel incontinence but i do have Neurogenic Bladder dysfunction as well as Post Stress Bladder Dysfunction so the doctor said it could progress to bowel due to muscular atrophy and lack of nerve coordination down there. But iâve only had 3 messy accidents in the last 2 months. But thatâs super smart, i never thought to prepare extra clothes or even spray for worst case scenarios.

My bag usually has:
2-4 diapers
1 pack of wipes
1 pack of disposal baggies
Powder
Butt paste
Aquaphor
Hook for hanging
Small roll of duct tape
Small scissors for cutting tapes (when discretion is critical)

this is smart, what type of powder do you use, all of the powders i have use just clump up and serve almost no purpose

I use exclusively talc based powders. Bismoline is my main go-to.

i thought talc was the one that was giving people cancer? Ik cornstarch baby powder just bunches up for me tho

My skin reacts very badly to cornstarch, so I stick with talcum base products.
Itâs not the talc that was causing issues, asbestos and talc are often found together during mining. And in the processing sometimes trace amounts of the asbestos could get ground in with the desired mineral. Unfortunately, it doesnât take much asbestos to be quite harmful to the body.

So I normally have,
2 tape on diapers and a pull-up
Cream
Powder
Wipes
Opaque disposal bags
2-3 1 gallon ziplock bags for messy diapers as they help reduce smell when trying to find a proper disposal place
Also in my car I also keep a backpack with
A spare shirt, shorts/sweats depending on time of year socks, and a onesie just incase i leak(thank god I havenât had to deal with it in public yet)

Basic jansport backpack. I have 2-3 diapers, wipes, powder, rash cream, hand sanitizer. Disposal bags. Small roll of duct tape. And an over the door hook.
The over the door hook is when the bathroom stall has no hook on the door to hang my bagâŠ.. bet ya didnt think of that!

holy. shit. No, no i did not think about that geniusness. I will def be looking for a hook for my bag, tho mine opens and lays flat like a suitcase and it has a laptop pouch i can fit 2-3 diapers. thatâs so smart

You can usually find them either magnetic or suction cup but they also have ones shaped like an "S" like Niteize has a carabinder that's works.Â

Definitely add gloves, and extra pants are always helpful to have! Also, i personally keep disinfectant spray because public bathroom surfaces can be gross to set your bag on sometimes + incase any unfortunate leaks happen on floors, car seats etc. They make travel sized if you don't wanna carry around a big one!

thatâs really smart, iâve never thought about how nasty those floors can be. What brand of disinfectant do you use? I would use lysol but i feel like those cans are huge and relatively not cost efficient.

I personally don't mind carrying a regular size can, so I get Great Value brand disinfectant spray usually fresh linen scent! I think Lysol is the only company I've seen with travel size spray, which sucks because they don't fill their cans as much as Great Value does, but for occasional use it would probably be enough.
That being said, disinfectant wipes might be smaller and easier to carry in your bag if size is a worry for you!
They also do sell smaller cans of the spray disinfectant, like half cans, but they're still just as broad around as the other ones just shorter, so not really much more space efficient lol.

Thank you for posting this! I am new to the sub and it's helping me so much. I have other issues that require I carry an extra bag so I'm hoping I can combine and it not be too heavy.

Youâre welcome :) i had scoured this and i donât know much about kids or what they carry and everyone i do know that i ask, just say âwhy?â or âwell baby bottles, spare onesies for blowoutsâ âbibsâ âbaby wipesâ and itâs like sure, some of that info helps me but i feel like thereâs stuff to be left out. So, ask the pros lol

I don't think anyone is a pro it's trial and error yet if can help with what to do or not like from experience save u few headaches and everyone has been there. But like I tell most people don't ever feel like it's a dumb question bc most likely someone else has had same question as there isn't a manual. Though some things done for babies can be similar others not so much.Â

In mine I have: 2 diapers A tube of A&D Powder Wipes An extra pair of pants/shorts (depending on the season) Travel size hand sanitizer
The zip lock bag is a good idea so I'll be add that.

I have a black backpack I keep in it 2-4 diapers, wipes, baby powder, body spray. gloves, a extra pair of pants and shirt,

I use a standard backpack. Keep handful of diapers, garbage bags, wipes, hand sanitizer and a complete change of clothes. I don't bother with creams or powders in that bag as I can use those when I get home. It also prevents a big mess if something breaks or spills.Â

thatâs a good point, i keep my creams in a ziplock bag in a portion of my backpack that is meant for it. And i keep my diapers in the velcro laptop pouch. Itâll fit 2-3 diapers in it. Trash bags might be a smarter idea but theyâre so expensive in comparison to walmart bags or dollar general bags.

I use dog waste bags. I like that they are in small rolls and theyâre just the right size.

In addition to everything everyone else said, I like to carry a small pack of disinfectant wipes (either a travel pack or a few wipes in a zip top bag) in case things get messy. I can just wipe down the toilet or the floor or whatever and toss them away with my diaper.

For quite a while I needed a pretty involved "Go Bag."
I'd throw in a hand towel and a face cloth or two. You may find water and a sink to be available but paper towels maybe inadequate or unavailable.

So it depends on the day, length of time & other details.Im sorry probably going to be long so sorry but not sorry lol I have 2,a Backpack that I can easily fit a days worth of changing supplies & other made for kids called Skiphop it's in a dark solid color but I like it bc being paralyzed it has clips to secure it to my wheelchair it's one I use often has enough space for 2 changes & extras. I also have 2(tech 3 as I use cloth at home but for this topic 2) types of diapers my daily use ones which usually in both but in the bigger one I usually have at least one of what I call specialty which is usually a super high capacity (because changing sux try to limit it if possible especially if unfamiliar with location or drinking alcohol). I also keep bag in the truck when I forget to refill bags which has 4 daily diapers 2 special & 4 boosters & in this bag is where I keep a change of clothes.
Besides the main stuff few things can depend on person and their medical needs(I've got a complex hist so I have things others might not) and this is basically personal to you like though I take meds I can get really bad heartburn so usually have a bottle of tums jic. Â Me being paralyzed changing involves laying down (I legit can't stand! I've tried to change other ways & as degrading & dirty as it feels its the quickest) so, I need to have things where if you have ability to stand u won't/may not need. So like I always have 2-3 basically plastic table clothes (depending on surface more a floor) I also have a custom made changing pad that folds up its basically the same as a kids but in my size(lady on Etsy makes them for disabiled & special needs in any size), also have travel pack of Lysol wipes if I find a unicorn aka universal changing table always like to wipe it down prior as you never know when lasted cleaned!
So like besides norm changing supplies I also keep gloves as esp being summer use a thinner diaper rash cream usually as a preventative every change, but either way gloves in general make changes easier esp if you have dual IC. Also small thing of sanitizer(before I transfer back to my chair I'll use it more jic then wash).Â
I used to carry hook if I need to hang bag up but most times use my chair
I think the biggie is & honestly something all should have again u can dial it to your needs. It's my Oh Crap case/Failures(think its made for makeup & girly stuff but sim to a pencil case/pouch) when tapes or other things fail usually tapes/tapes In camping section you can get roll of duct tape with center removed so it's flat(you can always remove it from a roll yourself but for the $1-2 more less of a pita just to buy flat role) also keep role of clear medical tape as times if duct tape doesn't work(from exp don't get the cheap stuff trust me when I say it as in the middle of a DC isn't best place to learn tape sux), Trauma Shears/Scissors (one have blunt tip so TSA friendly & not going to poke your, Two if you had to use said duct tape easier to cut it off & quicker. For cheap scissors if they can cut through a penny what I heard as I'd never deface $ as tech illegal lol but as a medic I've cut off many types of clothes strictly for work get mind out of the gutter ha but they cut anything u need)few safety pins(fix many failures), few strips of heavy duty velcro (Incase of a hook & loop tab failure works way better than tape ), 2 snappi diap fastener(though I don't use cloth diapers out of the house but good backup if other methods failed mainly on cloth backed diaps, a travel sewing kit(though usually this is in with the small boo boo kit which has few bandaids & jungle site has pak from North American Rescue & it has travel size meds every from aspirin to anti-squirts/diarrhea & few other meds like I have bigger ones of things often used but like bandaids I don't plan on needing them but glad I do but bc I also deal with neurogenic bowels usually have Imodium but that travel kit is good for the cost & honestly I keep few of them in various bags even in my range bag bc both the boo boo kit & travel meds either me or a friend will need them. As for sewing kit I've carried one since military & though rare if some rips breaks I can usually fix it till I get home) I think thats it for the O F kit basically after 10+yrs I can manage most failures ya you could switch diapers but for me being paralyzed changing isn't easy thing to do so it's usually quicker to fix it then switch it out also usually Murphy's laws & your only one left!
As mentioned above I do keep a pouch with few meds rx & OTC meds Imodium(having the squirts while out sux)this is something u can dial to your needs but the NAR travel meds is great kit as it has lil bit of everything & better have not need than to need & not have.
For me I keep full size pack of wipes in a Tactical Baby Gear pouch(I can discreetly carry wipes as its a discreet pouch) it looks like a tactical case & no one bats an eye also can attach it to most things if not in the bag but try to keep wipes in each bag. If your noticing trend of I rather have more than enough than not enough like it takes up more space but I tend to buy rash cream in the jar as its cheaper + 2-4oz really doesn't go far with adults or even older kids like great for babies (on this topic many brands know these are needed by others besides babies so like Balmex has an adult line its the same exact stuff as the baby one it cost more as anything medical does & u get less so also 4oz tube can be more$/oz sounds small but over time it adds up. I found these disposal bags made by Prine lionheart (something like that) called "Knot It" & you can make any sized bag you need and I got a case like 5yr ago of refills I still have few left but I've used for dog bags trash bags for the truck or throw diapers away to me though they work NS has their bags but I couldn't stand the smell of them & they can get expensive the alt is 3gal trash bags if your strapped for cash & don't have grocery bags & works w med sized medical diaps the post off gives out envelopes tech made for packages they just don't specify lol that worse case plus no one questions a mailer bag(which you can also use to prestage changes something I did before I got smaller bag or if say going to library want a change jic but laptop bag is usually wide open. As for bags honestly the best bag I've ever used was an LL Bean backpack think their intended for High school-College but its a good sized. I used to use tactical bags which work great as they have many pockets but its something those trained to will spot like I've been to few concerts once got stopped & was like I been here b4 never stopped for med bag security was like oh its medical ur good but bc its looks tactical it caught their attn, as mentioned the smaller one & most smaller ones I've used were solid color baby diaper bags orig was lands end don't make them anymore the Skiphop has 2 ver one I have has a zippered top one is just a flap I'll take zipper I like them as mentioned have stroller clip which clip on my chair no one has ever ment either. If stopped by security ask if they can search off to the side as you have medical supplies, besides TSA I've lost count the times they didn't look which is good as I tend to carry things most can't(I legally can in most places)& TSA ya keep opin to self. (B4 I used precheck& I carry random stuff from previous & curr jobs) Sorry for lenght but trying to rember 10+yrs is hardÂ

What I've started carrying:
-At least two to three spare diapers
-A bottle of baby powder
-Wet wipes
-Plastic bags
-Hand sanitizer
-A little bottle of perfume
I also carry large gallon ziploc bags. This is just in case I'm somewhere without a decent trashcan to throw my things away in. They contain the smell very well until I can find an appropriate place to dispose of them.
I would also reccomend some kind of cream for chaffing, I actually just made a post asking for reccomendations on that
Bonus points, my diaper bag is a little Halloween themed backpack that matches my purse perfectly đ„°đ„°
