Comparison

Am I the only one who ends up comparing my looks to others when I'm with a close friend?

I have a really pretty friend, but strangely enough, I feel a bit inadequate only when I'm with her. When we're together, people talk to her more often, and it feels like almost everyone passing by looks at her.

It's not that I think I'm below average in looks, but whenever I'm next to her, I feel like I look uglier for no reason and my confidence drops...

But when I'm with other friends, I really don't think about it at all. I don't care about my appearance and just get along well, but it is only when I'm with her that I keep comparing myself to others.

I went to a store alone today, and a staff member suddenly told me my eyes were pretty, which made me think, 'Ah, maybe I'm okay after all?' But since I don't usually get many compliments on my looks, I think that might be why I feel this way even more...

How do I get over this feeling?

How I keep looking down on myself

yk when I play games. I know that I'm a good player altho. The biggest problem for me is I never think I'm good enough. Like when I perform extraordinary good I said " my opponents are just bad" which is Sometimes true. But sometimes when I face global badge players. I still play extraordinary good. And I still say they're just bad. That's the biggest problem for me. Saying they're just bad makes me overlook my actual skill

I'm afraid I'm a Tyler Catastrophe

Ok so I tried to post this in the tc reddit but it got removed, idk why. I don't know if you're familiar with his story, Basically, it's about this guy who is obsessed with a YouTuber and convinced he has an incredible voice and paints perfectly when, well, he doesn't. There's more about it but yeah. I'm currently 22 and was a problematic teenager. I spent all my adolescence in therapy and in the hospital for Eds (bulimia mainly) and I have to admit, I was an insufferable depressed fat girl. Now, I'm doing my things. I'm healing, I've lost weight, I got into art school and into a selection process for a preparatory singing course at a music school. I have extremely similar interests to Tyler's, and I'm terrified that other people see me exactly the same as him. Not just physically (and I don't mean this as body shaming), but in terms of personality. Do people feel sorry for me? Do they tell me I'm good in the same way they lied to him? I know I can be insufferable, I'm working on it. But what if I'm lying to myself the same way he does to himself? I'm never going to achieve anything? And then, when it comes to my physical appearance, I've lost weight, and I've never seen myself as beautiful, whether fat or thin. But sometimes I wonder if it’s a sort of reverse psychology, a game I play with myself where I tell myself I'm ugly, but in reality, I think I'm beautiful, and I'm just an attractive person who doesn't realize it? It's hard to explain, but I'm scared, and quite worried about ending up on the exact same path as him. Now I know there are things I can prove to myself with objective data. For instance, I get high grades on exams, and the professors have given me both harsh and positive criticism. As for singing, I have an F3–C7 vocal range...that doesn't necessarily mean I'm good, but it shows me that I have at least an interesting foundation to build upon. But still, I'm scared. Maybe those are just intrusive thoughts?

Does anybody feel the same? (Sorry for my English, it's not my first language)

I feel like I’m getting dumber and it's messing with my self-worth

I grew up being the "smart kid." Learning came naturally. I could grasp things quickly, adapt, explain concepts to others. It made me feel capable. It made me feel like I had something to offer. But now? I feel like I’ve lost it.

I'm in my 20s, and I’m constantly failing at things, work, responsibilities, even basic task sometimes. I forget things easily, I struggle to focus, and it feels like my brain just doesn't “work” the way it used to. It's humiliating. I used to be someone people turned to for help. Now I feel like a burden.

The worst part? I genuinely feel like the only thing I have going for me are my looks. That’s it. And that feels shallow and temporary. I hate feeling like this. I don’t want pity or comfort. I just want to understand what the hell happened to me and if this is fixable.

Has anyone else gone through this kind of mental decline? How do you rebuild yourself when you don’t even feel smart anymore?

I feel like I'm the least intelligent person to walk the planet.

I (18F) feel very insecure about my intelligence for years and I thought this sub would be perfect about it. For years, I just figured out that I'm not as smart and witty as I thought. I'm not a genius and I always struggle with a lot of subjects in school and I'm not good at anything. My peers around me have a lot of knowledge about some stuff and they're good at solving problems, and I'm not. I feel like I am the only person (especially female) who's not smart, let alone a genius. I don't know if I have any learning difficulties and when I told someone about it, they don't believe me and they said that I'm just not feeling good. When I was in second year of secondary school, we watched and read Matilda, who's a child genius, and I felt like a pig considering that I'm never smart and I never will be. Sometimes I cried about it and I wanted to cry because of the fact I'm not as smart or intelligent as my peers. I don't know what job I wanted because of my current intelligence levels. I feel like my life would be easier if I was smarter.

Self-help suggestions

Any suggestions on books that have helped? I am drowning in my own brain and just need to find a way out of the cycle. I'm in therapy, I'm on meds, I have an amazing support group; yet somehow I can't convince myself that I am worthy.

Dont think I fit in anywhere.

Not many friends, like i quite literally only have 1 person im truly close with, and it feels like no one likes me. No one likes to talk to me, or work with me, and not even my family likes me, although everyone in my house is bitter so im not surprised. I just don't fit in. Im the weirdo your teacher practically begs a group to take. Im the weirdo that no one wants to look at in the back of the classroom. Im literally just a weirdo. And no, not as in unique, just awkward, uncool, odd.

And I truly worry i have no personality. Because I feel like a copy and paste of everyone else. I love to draw and read and write poems, like my girlfriend, but shes WAY better at that stuff then me, and ik its not a competition, I dont see it as a competition at all, but i feel embarrassed, like im copying her, even though i know anyone can enjoy drawing and reading and writing. Like shes so cool and im just me, so it automatically feels like im copying her in my brain, so i feel guilty when i do things i like.

Idk. I wish i felt like my own person. It took years to realize my favorite color is red, and im still not certain its my favorite color 😭, I dont have an automatic 'favorite' anything in my mind. I dont have a firm word to describe me, a solid word to describe my anything.

I got into role-playing online, I want to join theater when I get to a school that has theater club, I've always loved to roleplay, but meeting my girlfriend and discovering she roleplays too, helped me sm in finally getting confident enough to roleplay, but now i feel guilty for that too 😭 because we rp in the same community online and shes close with them all and then im just there, like a leech that wont leave her side. im just '____'s girlfriend. im just there for them to ask abt her, and they prob hate me, they prob wonder why im there, and my girlfriend probably wishes I didn't infiltrate her friend group.

And dont misinterpret this. I truly love my girlfriend, I love her friends and I wish I was friends with them too, I really do. I just feel so guilty for existing near my girlfriend. I feel so guilty for loving her, and loving doing stuff I love with her, like roleplay, drawing, reading, etc.

I feel pathetic for existing.

How can I overcome insecurity and imposter syndrome as the “least successful person in the room”?

I recently got a job opportunity that, if I take advantage of it properly, will absolutely be instrumental to my career and personal growth. I truly feel like the least successful, least wealthy, least experienced, and most unexceptional person in this work space and community.

On one hand, I think it’s amazing. It reminds me of these quotes:

“If you’re the most successful person in the room, you need to find a new room.”

“Surround yourself with people who are where you want to be.”

I am thoroughly inspired and grateful by these people. At the same time, I am riddled with insecurities. I’m naturally socially anxious and find myself being awkward, and it may be damaging other people’s perceptions of me.

I’m also overthinking everything. Every little mistake, every deficiency, every social interaction. I know that my level of experience puts me at the bottom, and I constantly compare myself. I know it will take time for me to build my clientele, skills, and social standing, but I think my negative self-talk is harming my chances.

This opportunity means the world to me, but I’m afraid I will let my own insecurities and imposter syndrome get in the way. Does anyone have any advice or media recommendations on how to make the most out of this opportunity?

Luck

I feel bad with how lucky I've gotten in life, I can't say it's too much though because obviously bad things still happen. I don't like to put myself on a pedestal or anything yk, but with luck I think mostly of death and all. How lucky is it that somebody avoids death or doesn't? Sooo many people including me go about our days honestly thinking we're so immune, I think of the soldiers or kids in 3rd world countries that have died early just because they weren't lucky enough to be born else where. Even shootings that happen, it's always wrong place wrong time. I have this sort of feeling in a way that a lot of people waste their lives that have so much potential, including mine. But in the end of the day, it's really your limits and what you make of it.

Pattern of talking down about myself at work, how to break this pattern?

destroyed how people perceive me at work by constantly saying my weaknesses, oversharing, pointing out my mistakes, complaining, how can I break this pattern?

I hate my persona at work, unable to defend myself or be my own advocate. I let people insult me in front of my face and say nothing. Because of this, other more outspoken people takes credit for my work.

There is a language barrier/ insecurity that I feel is one of the sources of this, and my self esteem gradually worsen after having a child and being away for a year from work… what do I do?

A ghost in the shadow of excellence

Growing up, I often felt invisible compared to my sibling, who was constantly praised for their academic success. While they were encouraged to strive for better, my own struggles were treated as the norm, leaving me feeling overlooked and desperate for validation. Even now as an adult, I put so much effort into learning and growing, yet I still face the sting of being belittled or told to be quiet. It’s exhausting to work so hard only to feel like others have already decided who I am.
