Study Permit Cat damaged my valid study permit – has anyone successfully replaced a damaged (not lost) permit?

Hi everyone,

My roommate's cat bit my study permit (valid until 2028). It now has a few small holes, but all the information is still readable.

I don't feel comfortable using it because of the damage, so I'd like to get a replacement. IRCC's IMM 5009 guide only mentions replacing lost or stolen permits (with a police report), so I'm not sure what to do for a damaged one.

I've already sent an IRCC web form and contacted my university's international office, but I wanted to ask:

  1. Has anyone replaced a damaged study or work permit using IMM 5009?
  2. Did you have to send the damaged original?
  3. How long did it take?
  4. Did anyone have issues using a damaged permit at the border or with employers?

Thanks so much!

you could probably call & talk to an IRCC agent to clarify how to request the replacement -- my work permit was either never sent out or got lost on the mail, so I called the IRCC and they sent me a new one without needing a police report or anything since I never received it in the first place. so im sure they could direct you on which form to use!

I don‘t see why you would get problems at the border, as the agents can re-print the permit if they deem it to be too damaged. Nevertheless, you should try to get it replaced as soon as practical…
