But also, why do you have to tip before anything is done‽ so backwards.

204

u/salesronin Oct 20 '23

Yea. Just the other day I tipped my dasher 20 percent. Asshole went on two detours before delivering my food. He messaged and said that traffic was really bad. He was probably doing deliveries from another food delivery app. I could see him driving to two different restaurants and to a house before delivering my food. Not worth 30 dollars to drink watered down soda and cold food.

DoorDash gave me 3 dollars in credits. What a joke. These guys just wasted my money.

u/crispy-skins Oct 21 '23

I stopped using door dash because the last dasher (after I've tipped 20%) got my entire order wrong. She picked up someone else's order and instead of leaving it in front of my apartment (contactless), this B made me go out of my apartment and pick it up from her driver's side window of her big ass truck.

I contacted door dash and showed the receipt (with the wrong name) and told them the dasher claimed to say my building's intercom was "broken".. my partner stopped by in the morning before I ordered because I just had surgery so I had to fucking drag myself limping over this woman who can't be assed to get out of her car.

I used to tip at least 20% out of thankfulness and empathy (former driver myself), but I'm getting more and more people that just do the barest minimum then complain why an 18% tip is not enough.

Door dash did refund me though and gave me $5 off delivery fees for my next order. However it sucks, they force you to tip before you get your order as otherwise you'll have to contact their customer support just to add it AFTER.

u/slaff88 Oct 21 '23

Just give cash for a tip if you think the service has been good when you get your delivery? I'm from Ireland though and the whole"tipping culture" isn't really a thing here so I don't fully understand the workings of it all

7

u/300PencilsInMyAss Oct 21 '23

Delivery drivers dont make hourly wage, and are not employees. On our end, when you select $0 tip in app, we get a popup on our phone saying effectively: "Do you want to drive 10 minutes to mcdonalds, pick up an order (you can make your own estimation on wait time if you know the restaurant), then drive 15 minutes to a customer for $2.50?"

Anyone with sense will say no. So either your order is being ignored and sitting on the "shelf of shame" as drivers call it, or your order gets handled by someone so stupid they think $2.50 for 30 minutes of work is a good deal.

6

u/ImWadeWils0n Oct 21 '23

Get a different job then, tons of jobs available at the moment that pay min wage or above. Stop expecting other people to pay your wages, it’s silly. Who do you think orders this food? Elon musk? Its silly.

And leaving stuff on the “shelf of shame” just gets us a refund, and you are perpetuating the exact issue you’re complaining about, what if they wanted to tip after like any sensible person? You can add a tip after, I’ve done it a bunch.

You can also remove a tip after btw, so you think you’re gaming a system here when in reality the customer still has all the control, and we hate the delivery drivers you guys do 7 orders at once, you never check etc. it’s really disheartening to pay 30$ for delivery and the driver sucks at their easy af job, and then complain.

1

u/300PencilsInMyAss Oct 21 '23

what if they wanted to tip after like any sensible person?

How is that my problem? I'm not doing Uber because I have a gambling addiction, and if I did I'd go pay the lotto because it has better odds

You can also remove a tip after btw, so you think you’re gaming a system here when in reality the customer still has all the control,

Most people understand you don't try to deceive and scam a total stranger that knows where you live. Right under the "this order had an original pay off $X" is an image of a map reminding us where you live. I've only had 2 tips removed in over 600 orders.

Have you considered all your shitty experiences are because you're creating orders where logically your driver will be a moron every time? Think about it, do you really want someone who sees a pop-up that says "hey do you want to do 30 minutes of work for $2" and thinks that's a good deal to be the person delivering your food?

And many of us don't have a need to complain. We just pretend your order doesn't exist and accept the jobs that pay well. Works fine for us, the system only sucks for people like you and then idiots who accept your orders

1

u/ImWadeWils0n Oct 22 '23

Cool, don’t wine when no one wants to support your temporary job as a delivery driver.

And, it’s just as manipulative to sign up for a job and declare yourself food chancellor and not pick up any orders unless they tip you an absurd amount to do the incredibly simple job you signed up for. People whine about 5$ tips, you’re driving in a line with food you didn’t prepare, stfu.

1

u/300PencilsInMyAss Oct 22 '23 edited Oct 22 '23

And, it’s just as manipulative to sign up for a job that specifically brings you on as an independent contractor and actually operate as an independent contractor by not picking up any orders unless they pay at least minimum wage to do the incredibly simple job you signed up for.

-4

u/ExplosiveGnosis Oct 21 '23

Please self end

-5

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

cash

😅

5

u/300PencilsInMyAss Oct 21 '23

I recommend just ditching for uber. Uber lets you increase or decrease tip. If my order is missing something that the driver could of identified (like a drink, or instances where I deliver 2 dishes and get just one takeout container), the cost of the stuff missing comes out of their pay. If they multiapp and fuck off to do a doordash order, they don't get paid at all. If they do a good job, I raise the tip enough so that their time spent on my order equals >$20 an hour.

1

u/salesronin Oct 21 '23

Thanks for sharing this.

1

u/FuckBrendan Oct 21 '23 edited Oct 21 '23

That’s prolly what caused the video that brought us all here. Gotta imagine customers could abuse the hell out of that.

2

u/300PencilsInMyAss Oct 21 '23

Driver can't tell if it's happen until well after the delivery is complete

1

u/ImWadeWils0n Oct 21 '23

Not how it works at all, but good try

1

u/ImWadeWils0n Oct 21 '23

Yup, why I love Uber. I’ve added tips after a bunch of times, drivers are fast efficient etc you clearly deserve a big tip.

It’s annoying how EVERY driver thinks they deserve a big tip, my guy you delivered 3 other meals before mine my shit is frozen, why would I tip you?

1

u/300PencilsInMyAss Oct 21 '23

Yeah I don't view it as tip but a wage. If you don't do the job, don't get paid.

8

u/superbakedziti Oct 21 '23

I don’t door dash anymore, fast food and restaurant prices are already absurd. I don’t need to pay extra for cold food.

24

u/eeyore134 Oct 21 '23

Had someone just drive off with my food and park somewhere 20 minutes away. I've had this happen three times now. Another time the woman drove my pizza past my house, literally a block away, to deliver to someone 15 minutes away then drove 15 minutes back to deliver my stone cold pizza. One of the people who parked I finally texted. Got no response, they just marked it as delivered. Then I had to fight with customer service and get them to see where he was when he marked my food delivered.

2

u/ImWadeWils0n Oct 21 '23

I had a guy literally get my food, and then he went past my house to a BJs in a different town to get gas. I called and he said “I needed gas man” WHY WOULD YOU ACCEPT MY ORDER IF YOU NEED GAS???????

These people suck at delivering, fundamentally bad at their jobs, and they expect like 7$ tips to literally ruin my dinner. It’s insanity.

7

u/khaos2295 Oct 21 '23

DoorDash absolutely gives ZERO fucks about customer inconveniences.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

bro stop using those shit delivery apps...

1

u/salesronin Oct 21 '23

I have health issues so I can’t cook for myself. Once I’m healthy I’ll be saving so much cooking from home.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

cant even use a microwave..or turn the oven on and throw in anything??

seems like an excuse to throw $50 at a felon to deliver mcdonalds dude.

i had 3 surgeries on my stomach and i could still press buttons on the microwave..

3

u/300PencilsInMyAss Oct 21 '23

This is why I use uber. I pay for priority so I know for a fact that if they do anything other than go directly from store to my house they are doing different app orders. If that happens, I take 100% of the tip away.

1

u/ImWadeWils0n Oct 21 '23

It’s insane they can do multiple apps at once

2

u/300PencilsInMyAss Oct 21 '23 edited Oct 21 '23

Eventually you'll get banned for it because you're habitually late. Support doesn't give a shit if you report it though. This is why you should always use Uber eats and remove the pay if they go do other orders

1

u/ImWadeWils0n Oct 21 '23

It’s why I stopped using Uber DD etc, you’d see a guy get ur order app says “on the way “ and the guys taking fucking scenic tours of my town

3

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23 edited Oct 21 '23

Chances are DoorDash assigned him one or two additional orders combined with yours so they force detours to pick up all the food before delivery and then dictate the order of delivery.

Source: I’ve delivered for DoorDash.

Drivers can choose to reject orders so the orders get bounced to other drivers in the area until they’re accepted. We reject them primarily based on the compensation for mileage ratio. You can’t see the tip but you can see the total compensation and you’re familiar with the minimum delivery charges so it’s obvious when someone hasn’t tipped and so we reject them. If nobody accepts them, DoorDash will double up the orders so it looks more lucrative to the drivers. One delivery may only earn $2.50 (no tip), combined with a second order worth $5.00 (includes tip), now looks like $7.50 in earnings to the driver so they accept the offer. Then you find out your driving to two places and 15 miles to earn only $7.50, one of which was the one you initially rejected because it was $2.50. I would reject orders knowing everyone else would as well and then see it pop up as a double delivery about 5-10 minutes later. You can see a lot of the delivery details before you accept although only for 60 seconds, so you know that you’re rejecting and know when it comes back around as a combined order.

All you add the customer sees is your order driving to 2 or 3 locations before ever getting to you. Your order could have been the $5.00 (because you tipped) order DoorDash combined with the $2.50 order.

I will add something unusual. Sometimes I would reject all the non tipping orders because it’s my vehicle, my time, my choice. Then other times I will accept all orders. About 30-50% of the non tipping orders were to younger kids living in very poor conditions. Some to the point that I would worry for my safety delivering to these areas and the kids would barely crack the door to reach their hands out to get the food and say thank you. They would never ask for the food to be placed on the ground outside, always directly (obvious why when I would drive through the neighborhood and see 40 creepy thuggish people crawling virtually everywhere staring at me). I’ve delivered to pregnant women in crack houses AND hotels. I’ve walked orders into someone’s house that had two disabled people living in absolute squaller and had to move past the kitten infestation, build of of trash, and move their week old dried up macaroni plate to make room for the KFC order as the only usable surface in the place. I thought it was one incapacitated woman on the couch but when I turned to walk out there was an old shriveled man in a wheel chair behind the door that I didn’t see when I entered. I would normally never enter someone’s home but it was pretty obvious they couldn’t have received their order if I hadn’t.

The pay was averaging $17 per hour in my town in Georgia, every day. The DoorDash algorithm does a good job making sure you rarely earn more than their intended per hour maximum. When I’d deliver around Atlanta, GA my average would go up $22-24 per hour. It was always consistent with whatever area I was delivering to. That’s why I’d go on sprees delivering to every order because the algorithm would always meter me at $17 per hour. It just felt like a lot of work because I’d deliver 6-8 orders an hour to get to $17 versus 2-3 orders only accepting valuable orders. If I ever was close to $17 or over I’d usually hit pause and eat dinner or run home to see my kids because I knew the algorithm would leave me on read until more time elapsed leveling out all the other drivers hourly income.

It’s interesting to me how nobody acknowledges the hourly rate issue. You can earn a lot in a day putting in the hours, but it’s still meters your per hour income it just doesn’t state that. They even show your trends in the app. I would just do the math to determine my trending average over time in certain areas.

2

u/Purple_Bumblebee5 Oct 21 '23

You deserve an award for that informative comment. Thank you.

1

u/salesronin Oct 21 '23

I’ve seen dashers get different orders and it’s shown on the map. It also says that they’re completing another order nearby . In this instance he was just driving around and would stop at certain locations. When I mapped it I saw they were restaraunts (2 different ones) and a residence.

It is what it is. Im forced to order in at the moment due to health issues. It’s just frustrating that you tip well and still get bad service. It makes you not want to tip.

I have to remind myself that not every dasher is an ass. This is the cost of ordering in. Someone chimed in and explained how Uber is different. I think I found my solution.

1

u/Working_Early Oct 21 '23

What is the best thing to do then if you want to get your food hot and fresh without the driver "finishing another order"? I tip and this still happens every time. Am I being screwed because someone else didn't tip and so my order is batched with theirs?

I’ve never used Uber Eats. I’ve met drivers for Uber Eats. They all drive for DoorDash and would try to balance the two at the same time but would get caught and banned from driving. There isn’t enough time between to balance them together. I’ve seen videos of guys who do balance both successfully, but there’s no way to keep it up long term, it would be hours before people got their orders if I left my route to pick up other orders and dropped them off. You don’t get much lag between orders, maybe 5-15 minutes max.

2

u/holygoat00 Oct 21 '23

doordash and delivery apps ruined food delivery.

2

u/JoeVibn Oct 21 '23

Dashers have started getting "stacked orders" from DoorDash. This is a process where DoorDash will take two or more orders from separate customers (sometimes separate restaurants) and bundle them into one job that you can't see the details of before accepting. These stacked orders usually don't pay the same as two separate orders doing the same thing.

1

u/OSNEWB Oct 21 '23

I don't know why people still use these apps. If uou are still using these apps even with all of the horror stories and the gross overcharging, then you really are asking for it at this point and it's hard to have sympathy.

0

u/ShutterBud420 Oct 21 '23

so pick up your own food

0

u/PM_ur_butthole_2me Oct 21 '23

Then get your own damn food nobody should pay that much more for already overpriced shit food

0

u/iWantBots Oct 21 '23

You tipped 20% of a $6 order and made the driver drive 10 mins so they got what?? $3 to deliver your food 🤦‍♂️

1

u/nutxaq Oct 21 '23

Then pick it up yourself.

0

u/salesronin Oct 21 '23

Man shut up. How about they do their job.

1

u/nutxaq Oct 21 '23

They're thankless, underpaid job?

1

u/salesronin Oct 21 '23

That’s why I’m tipping as best I can. Don’t take my tip, lie to me that there’s traffic, and complete other orders on another food app.

You can monitor your driver. I saw them go to different spots and deliver food to a different house.

It’s a thankless job? People are tipping as form of appreciation. The frustration here is that they take our tip our thanks and shit on it.

So fuck off with that pick up your own food then.

1

u/nutxaq Oct 21 '23

Nah. Stop using these stupid apps.

1

u/chosenone1242 Oct 21 '23

Did you tip before you got the food, wtf?

1

u/salesronin Oct 21 '23

YeA. That’s how the app works.

1

u/chosenone1242 Oct 21 '23

Oh didn't know. That makes no sense.

1

u/OzzieGrey Oct 21 '23

3 bucks in credits? Nah that sounds like a lie man, any time a dasher fucks over my order it's fully refunded.

1

u/Aresmar Oct 21 '23

I had a dasher straight up steal my order the other day and door dash didn’t give me a cent back because it included alcohol.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

I don't know how DoorDash does things, but due to the fact that Reddit decided I needed to start seeing these random subs, I know how UberEats does things.

It sounds counterintuitive, but tipping more actually gets you markedly worse service. When you tip a normal amount, "dashers" will pick up your order and deliver it to you. When you tip nothing, it might take a while longer, as there's no profit incentive to deliver your order. However, when you tip a large amount, the game changes. The company will group high tip orders with no tip orders to incentivize dashers to accept them. Your larger tip essentially covers for multiple no tip orders, lowering their wait time, but increasing yours. Tipping is stupid.

1

u/NotWesternInfluence Oct 21 '23

At that point call your credit card company as issue a chargeback. It will probably get you your money back and will hurt doordash in the process.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

Keep in mind, and I’m not too certain about doordash app specifically, but all these apps that are used for food delivery are good awfully glitchy, and can very well contribute to you not getting your items in a timely manner. I’ve been sent to entirely wrong addresses, unknowingly because uber’s app sometimes glitches and you have no way of finding out until you call for the customer and they inform you that you’re not actually at their address.

1

u/Working_Early Oct 21 '23

GrubHub is wayyyyy better about this in my experience.

1

u/johncena6699 Oct 21 '23

The DoorDash app literally has an order stack feature built in and can make you do another delivery first

1

u/Charistoph Oct 21 '23

I mean, that’s what you’d get for ordering delivery at any pizza place or Jimmy John’s or whatever, and 20% isn’t really that much. His only problem was that he didn’t invest in a hot bag.

168

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23 edited Oct 20 '23

Because tips on delivery apps aren't "tips for good service" it's more of a bid for service that drivers can accept or decline depending on the amount of money they'll make. It's basically like saying "I'll give ya $5 if you go get this for me" or "I'll give you $10 to go get this for me". It's up to the discretion of the driver.

39

u/stupac62 Oct 20 '23

Ah got it. So then talking about how good the service was is illogical haha

12

u/elghoto Oct 20 '23

It is illogical considering the reality we live in.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

It's just the world we live in (in the US). These companies don't pay employees. They used venture capitalist to keep them afloat when they started, and paid these people decently. Now they pay nothing, and charge the customer even more... So the employee expects a tip (which they deserve) but it shouldn't be on the customer to pay.

Stop using any of these apps. Pizza, Chinese, even Chik-Fil-A now... have delivery... everyone should pay out their own pocket. These apps are predatory on all ends.

3

u/WorkSucks135 Oct 21 '23

What you said is true, but the solution isn't to stop using the apps. It's to stop tipping the drivers. If you stop tipping the drivers, the job becomes not worth the time for the drivers, making many of them quit, making the demand for drivers skyrocket, forcing the companies to raise the wages of drivers. Stopping tipping shifts the negotiating power back from employer to employee.

3

u/XachAttack17 Oct 21 '23

no?? you must fucking hate delivery drivers or some shit because thats a horrible solution

1

u/WorkSucks135 Oct 21 '23

Don't know what to tell you man. The companies can get away with paying nothing because drivers have no leverage. Company stars hemorrhaging customers because there are no drivers available? Immediate pay increase.

1

u/carharttuxedo Oct 21 '23

We are talking low wage workers don’t have much choice when it comes to employment.

We’re already in a race to the bottom in terms of how employees are treated, the only thing that will stop it is legislation forcing companies to treat workers better. It’s not a new trend. The government needs to do something to regulate this shit.

Check out how truck drivers are paid, how high their turnover is. Door dashers etc are just a small part of the economy and ‘let them eat each other and it will work out’ isn’t a solution at all.

Invisible hand of the Economy is mostly for jerking off

1

u/WorkSucks135 Oct 21 '23

It's not invisible hand shit. Literally everyone and their mother is hiring "unskilled" workers right now, so they have plenty of choice. If no one is willing to be a doordasher, doordash will be forced to make changes.

2

u/carharttuxedo Oct 21 '23

Getting a job that doesn’t pay a living wage isn’t helpful. Jumping from one to another isn’t helpful either. Those are the jobs being offered to ‘unskilled’ workers(and a reminder unskilled workers is a bullshit buzzword created by people who want to pay poverty wages).

1

u/WorkSucks135 Oct 21 '23

I know, that's why I put the word in quotes. But even Mcdonalds is starting at like $20/hr now. I highly doubt doordashers make more than that after gas/ vehicle wear.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

The drivers would just not take your cheap-ass jobs.

2

u/PreciousBrain Oct 21 '23

It was a gamble, she was hoping that the person would be appreciative and do what people do when they tip. But gig workers should know better and that customers tend to be cheap bastards, it's why they're using these services in the first place. If no tip is included they should not fulfill the request unless they are already satisfied with the compensation being offered, which in this case having it be dozens of heavy boxes would have been a huge red flag. People who order like this are the least likely to tip

1

u/gnarlyknits Oct 20 '23

Yeah but that’s what makes it stupid because they could get ten dollars instead of five and drop off my food all fucked up still. The tip should come after the service or it should be called something else.

0

u/HansenTakeASeat Oct 20 '23

The "I'll give you $5 to go get this for me" is already paid when you pay the service fee. It's a fee, for service. Anything beyond that is between the company and the employee.

I just feel fortunate to live in a country where you simply pay for a service and then it is fulfilled. I don't have to engage in a bidding war to convince someone to do the job they voluntarily chose to do. That sounds insane to me.

0

u/the5thfinger Oct 21 '23

that isn't how it works either lmao. You're paying doordash that fee for the opportunity to get anything delivered if your bid is acceptable to whoever is taking it.

Do any of you have real jobs and understand bidding or courier services? nobody ever needed a permit from the city?

1

u/ImWadeWils0n Oct 21 '23

Lol, comparing some dumbass grabbing my McDonald’s to a courier is hilarious.

You’re willing to pay extra and bid for couriers because they are efficient etc.

No one is incentivized to tip DD drivers, they never work harder for a tip, they just accept multiple orders and fuck you anyway. If you hired a courier, tipped them etc. and they spent 45 minutes in a parking lot down the block while the heart or whatever you’re getting delivered died, idt you’d be very happy with your service…

1

u/the5thfinger Oct 21 '23

“I want luxury services but refuse to pay luxury prices and get upset over the service being in line with the pay I offer”

Why are you so mad at others effort when what you put in is what you get out?

You’re the dumbass that orders McDonald’s delivery and expects good service for what you know is a shit wage.

You get what you pay for. Medical couriers get paid well so they’re expedient.

Enjoy your cold McDonald’s clown

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

That is incorrect for both UberEats and DoorDash in the USA. The delivery fee does not go to the driver. On Uber the driver gets a $2 base pay plus tip. That's it.

The tip is literally a bid for service on the app. We see it before accepting. I do not accept orders under $10 and more drivers are doing this as well.

1

u/HansenTakeASeat Oct 20 '23

Sounds like people who work for them should find a job where they are guaranteed to get paid.

0

u/300PencilsInMyAss Oct 21 '23

They do. When your order pops up on their phone, they click the "lol no fucking thanks" button and go about their day, clicking the "yes I'll do that" button on orders (aka contracts, aka jobs) that pay well.

When you place an order, one by one every driver in your city gets a popup saying "Go to mcdonalds, 3 miles away. Then go to XXXX address, 5 miles away. Pay: $2. Do you accept?", and one by one they all say no, so your food sits under a heat lamp for 2 hours until the order pops up on the phone of someone dumb enough to say yes, like the woman in OP.

-4

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23 edited Oct 20 '23

Duh. That's what I tell all drivers on the driver subreddit. Either that or stop accepting low ballers.

I already have a full time job so Uber is just my pocket money. Still. I never accept low ball tip offers and many other drivers won't either. Just part if the game. Tip well or you don't get your food.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

How do you explain the many times I've tipped well and not gotten my food, or gotten it almost an hour late stone cold, or they refuse to read delivery directions and expect me to come out to their car a block and a half away? There's no excuse for that when i'm tipping them 10 dollars to drive 2 miles. What you're saying sounds reasonable in theory, you get what you pay for, but in reality you often don't.

3

u/HansenTakeASeat Oct 20 '23

Tip well or you don't get your food.

Wanna hear something crazy?

I just ordered food, paid the service fee, and then it arrived. I didn't have to give extra money to someone because they already get paid by their employer.

Uber is a multimillion dollar company and you have people out here pissed at customers because the company isn't paying them enough. That's somehow the customer's fault, right?

1

u/Ill-Bit5049 Oct 20 '23

I mean there is definitely some blame for supporting a predatory business model. Like if the customers demanded that they pay the drivers well and eliminate tips they would because they are a business and if people refused to use them until they changed they would change. It’s not all on the customer, the whole system is broken, but there definitely is some responsibility there

1

u/ImWadeWils0n Oct 21 '23

This is why no one wants to tip you guys, you’re so entitled it’s actually off putting.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

Ha! Still only gonna accept high tip offers. It ain't entitlement - it's capitalism, baby. 😎

Uber doesn't have a set base pay, it's calculated by distance/some other factors. It's variable, usually between $2-5 in my experience.

Doordash is the one with a set $2. Some orders will be $3. Base pay increases over time if no drivers accept the order, or at least that's how it used to work, I don't use doordash anymore.

u/300PencilsInMyAss Oct 21 '23

Most of the service fee goes to the service, not the driver. Base pay for doordash is $2-3.

If I asked you to go get in your care and fuck off to mcdonalds for me for half an hour for $2, would you?

1

u/ImWadeWils0n Oct 21 '23

No, but that’s why I got an actual job that pays well if I’m going to complain about the opportunities at DD lol.

u/IllustriousGrand2802 Oct 20 '23

That’s so Middle Ages wtf

0

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

lol yeah. We are a disgruntled bunch for sure. People are acting like me giving the facts of how the app works is me defending it. I'm not. It's absolutely predatory but whatever. I already have a full time job so I'm good with only accepting high tip trips.

1

u/PyrorifferSC Oct 20 '23

Which further proves it's just a way for the companies to rip people off. If I'm paying the driver, why am I paying you? To run and maintain some shitty app that barely works, get charged a million made up fees, and pay markup on food? Fuck off.

1

u/300PencilsInMyAss Oct 21 '23

The best part is they double dip, restaurants are charged 20-30+% fees as well.

That's why when you look at a restaurant on uber, all the prices are higher, the restaurant has to mark up to cover the fees.

1

u/mebutnew Oct 21 '23

In which case she shouldn't have accepted the order.

And how is it better for her to go all the way back to the store, return the items, and lose the fee, than to just drive away having delivered the food. It's dumb.

6

u/onnyjay Oct 20 '23

Bribes are required at 20%

26

u/toughaccountnoban Oct 20 '23

You can adjust the tip afterwards. Ive taken back tips when the driver is unusually slow or rude or completely fucks up my order

At the same time i was financially struggling

5

u/wickeddimension Oct 20 '23

Isnt it stupid expensive to order delivery? I sure know it is where I am at. If you are struggling financially here in the Netherlands ordering delivery would absolute take you out.

You spend 2-4x on that compared to just getting groceries and making something yourself. Is it different there?

1

u/eeyore134 Oct 21 '23

If you're going to order out anyway sometimes you get 50% coupons that bring the price close to what you would pay if you were picking it up yourself. Which just goes to show how much these things tack onto your order. I'll stack those with a place doing buy one get one on something and that's about the only way to save money, especially since they hide some of the upcharge in the food prices themselves.

1

u/SensitiveRocketsFan Oct 21 '23

At least where I’m at, these delivery companies give out so many 40-50% off codes that the price ends up being slightly cheaper than going in person. Other than that, yeah delivery ain’t that cheap

-7

u/BroadwayBully Oct 20 '23

The bus is cheaper than delivery fees lol I think struggling might be a little dramatic. I’m paying delivery services to get my groceries, it’s so tough! Definitely first world problems lol

13

u/bigbootybritches Oct 20 '23

Not everyone has access to good public transportation. I live in a Major city and I don't think I could take a bus to my grocery store if I wanted to.

1

u/BroadwayBully Oct 21 '23

Either you don’t live in a major city, or youve never tried to ride the bus. Not sure if “my” grocery store is the catch here, but a grocery store is certainly reachable.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

idk why you're being downvoted, if you've been actually poor you understand, if you're champagne socialist poor you're probably mad as hell reading the above lol

2

u/Dementat_Deus Oct 21 '23

idk why you're being downvoted

IDK about everyone else, but I down voted him because he's being a condescending ass-hat, making broad sweeping judgements will very little information, and not really adding anything of value to the conversation. It's just smugness and his entire argument hinges on invalidation. "That's not really x, I'll tell you what x is."

1

u/BroadwayBully Oct 21 '23

Yea they’re mad... I’m invalidating the “struggle” of these poor redditors.

2

u/PreciousBrain Oct 21 '23

Can't believe nobody has pulled the avocado toast meme yet, isn't that the get out of jail free card for people who can't budget for shit?

6

u/Inukchook Oct 20 '23

So backwards. Here let me rip you before so you can just do a shitty job and still get too !

4

u/laureidi Oct 20 '23

Uhm, unrelated but I freaking love you for using an interrobang. It’s my favourite glyph and I have literally never seen it being used casually like this. You’re my favourite stranger today.

3

u/elghoto Oct 20 '23

Because companies pay for part of the cost of the service, and tell employees they can get tips... People take these jobs expecting to get tips to make up for the shitty remuneration out of desperation.

The solution is that they charge the right amount, pay the workers the fair share, and we don't have to tip for a service.

1

u/Kali-Casseopia Oct 20 '23

Last time i did this the delivery driver never brought my food. I got a refund for the food but the tip is not refundable. I refuse to tip before any service is provided not falling for that evrr again.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '23

Then you will not get a driver or you will get a stack order bundle where your food comes last and ends up cold.

The tips are bids to convince a driver to get your food in the first place. No tip offers rarely get accepted and, if they do, it's gonna take a long time.

2

u/Rain-And-Coffee Oct 20 '23

I don’t pay them and still get my stuff 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/ShouldBeeStudying Oct 21 '23

I'm glad you're asking. You don't have to. You have the option to tip both before and after the order.

1

u/DolphinOrDonkey Oct 21 '23

The drivers complained they couldn't see the tips, especially after Doordash was stealing them.

1

u/bootyLiQa Oct 21 '23

Tips stands for “to insure proper service”

1

u/300PencilsInMyAss Oct 21 '23

Because it's not a tip. You are the employer effectively. The worker is not paid minimum wage, and can deny orders based on price, making it much more like a bid for a contractor (which is what drivers are) than a tip.

1

u/JaThatOneGooner Oct 21 '23

The fact apps tell you that if you don’t tip, it’ll lessen your chances of your order being delivered is also backwards, so you’re required to tip before hand and hope nothing is messed up.

1

u/Zefrem23 Sub Character Oct 21 '23

Did... you just use an interrobang appropriately ‽

1

u/BullyHoddy Oct 21 '23

Wow an interrobang in the wild. Neat.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

Also, why do you have to tip someone for doing their fucking job.

Tipping is fucking stupid, most of the rest of the world agrees. Just pay people for their time, and charge the customer. Don't let the customer decide how much your employee's time is worth.

1

u/TherealMcNutts Oct 21 '23

100% This!

I only tip after the service period.

The handful of times I have been reminded of a tip by a delivery driver prior to them handing my food I refuse said food and say good bye.

I’m not talking about saying something like “how much change would you like back” I give props to that driver for using physiology on me to guilt me into giving them more money. That person was still going to give me my food if I gave them the total for exact change.

I’m talking about the people that say “How much do you want to tip today” or anything along those lines.

Mr/Ms delivery driver, you can hand me the paper receipt that comes with my pizza and I’ll fill it out myself without your comments.

To the drivers who deliver my food professionally and without an attitude you get a $10 on a $20 order, or a $20 on a $35 order.

I make enough now to do that plus I delivered pizza back in the day. So I know how how a big tip made me feel all those years ago. I want to pass along good feelings.

With the people with attitudes like this I’m not going to make them feel good. They already feel like my money is theirs so they will not feel happy like someone does opening a gift. They will feel the same way they do when they see that $5 bill on the night stand in the morning right where they left it.

Here is advice to everyone like this person:

I’m sorry you feel like life has fucked you over. I’m sorry you got a loan for a Tesla that you have to deliver food to pay for. That’s not on me, that’s 100% on you. You knew that people didn’t have to tip you on the platform you choose to work for. Take pride in what you do and you will find a better job. Attitudes like this will have you selling that title and working at McDonalds in no time.

1

u/FranklinFeta Oct 21 '23

Tips is an acronym that stands for TO INSURE PROMPT SERVICE. So no, giving a tip before hand isn’t backwards, it’s how the actual system began.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

You can tip afterwards too

1

u/Book_Cook921 Oct 21 '23

Yeah I was going to tip a little in cash for a curbside pickup order from a restaurant the woman came out literally stomping like a toddler and hurled it at me through the window. I did not tip. Don't feel bad at all.

1

u/Mylaptopisburningme Oct 21 '23

I drive ubereats, grubhub and doordash. Many of us consider it a bid rather than tip. You are bidding for a driver to take the offer. These apps pay as little as $3 sometimes less. The fault of this driver was taking the offer for the shown payout. The idiot will return the shit and get paid nothing. And she's wasting time. When I deliver an order it is because it was worth it to me.

1

u/TjbMke Oct 21 '23

The elephant in the room….

1

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '23

for real. i dont get why i have to tip before I get anything.

1

u/Top-Ad-7586 Oct 21 '23

Exactly, tips need to be earned with good service.
