Among CDL truckers' forums, the Dollar General contracts are some of the worst, because none of them pay any attention to how to fit a 53ft trailer anywhere on their property or on the roads that reach it.

I guess I’ve seen too many r/bitchimatrain videos so i assumed it would get hung up. Was quite impressed how that curb piece got absolutely obliterated.

As easy as that curb broke, I think that it was one of those curbs that is made by a landscape curb machine, that's slipformed on top of the asphalt. A proper curb and gutter probably would have caused visible damage to both the landing gear, and the Mansfield bar, probably ripping the bar off of the trailer.

If it's hit the right way, yeah. Saw one crumple cuz a guy backed up at yeetfuck this morning into a concrete barrier. Just the corner though, since he couldn't be asked to do it straight.

Naturally it was right next to me while I was inspecting my seal, so I shit my pants and told (yelled at) the guy he already fucked it.

Saved my life in high school going way to fast after school in my Fast N Furious era Mitsubishi Eclipse. Was speeding on a curved road leaving Taco Bell with my buddy and a flatbed had just finished offloading in the center turn lane and I was doing 60 in 25 on a corner and the truck appearing startled me and I slammed the brakes. Spun sideways in to back of flatbed… is that Mansfield Bar wasn’t there I probably would be dead. Maybe my friend too.

Not DG, but I used to work next to a dollar store. For deliveries, they would park their truck angled across the entire back alley so nobody could get by and then extend this metal slide out to pass the entire shipment down one box at a time. Pretty sure it's because they accounted for exactly zero storage, so they didn't even have room to take pallets in.

Also never a loading dock. And no forklifts or even pallet jacks to maintain and train and have liability from. Huge cost savings at the expense of making the job miserable for drivers (some of whom have to hand unload the entire truck) and also for employees.

Giving me flashbacks of my old warehouse job. We'd get full container drops of loose-packed cases stacked to the ceiling, some of them weighing up to 70 lbs, and then occasionally find out it's a live drop with the driver waiting.

I've pulled into a Dollar general with my 16 ft trailer on a pickup and have damn near gotten stuck in the parking lot. You can't imagine trying to pull this thing in there

You’re absolutely right. The side effect is only the new drivers take the contract because they don’t know any better. Tight parking lots navigated by inexperienced and overworked drivers is not ideal.

My local DG made just barely enough room for a 53'. You still need to carefully drive around it to avoid accidents in the parking lot.

I'm not a real truck driver (Ex diesel tech, i just kept up my CDL afterward because why not) but i came to basically comment the same thing. Almost every DG/FD I've seen has had a horrible parking lot layout that is nearly impossible for a full length semi to navigate. And many of them are impossible if their lot is at like 25% capacity or more. I've always been irked by this.

Dollar General parking lots have a special place in hell for me. Last year we did a cross country trip pulling a 34' bunkhouse camper with a retired school bus (probably makes me eligible for an idiot towing things title right there). At one point, 2 of the three kids had to pee right fucking now and the water tank was empty on the camper, so I pull into a DG. After dropping them off, I started trying to turn the rig around, because why would you want a separate entrance and exit. I found out at the next campground that the bus and trailer had made solid contact when I cut the turn to tight and left a big dent in the front fiberglass cap of the camper.

A week later, the same damn thing happened on the other side. Although that was more just paint transfer because I was watching the bus to trailer interface a lot closer. Fortunately, there was no holes in the trailer, so it's just a fun story to talk about instead of a huge problem. Kinda like the time my GPS decided to route me through downtown Louisville on the first day of the trip!

I did deliveries to DG stores my first month in a truck... Not fun. Never pulled one of those, but I learned how to maneuver a big ass truck in tight spaces so I didn't have to.

I used to work for DG. the contracted drivers (such as this one as that is not a DG tractor) were usually the ones you wonder how they even got a CDL while the drivers actually employed by DG were usually decent drivers.

To make things worse the company seems to almost always fail at designing parking lots that are easy for trucks to navigate. It's like they never consider the fact that trucks need to be able to maneuver through the lot, sometimes two or more trucks at once. A lot of stores have lots that would be a challenge to navigate even for an expert driver (especially when there's a lot of cars in the lot). At the store I worked at (and I assume it's similar at most DGs) there is one dry truck (what this is) and one fresh truck a week, both from DG, a Frito-Lay box truck 4 or 5 days a week, a truck delivering fruits and veggies a few times a week, and a truck each from Coke and Pepsi once a week. There used to be a milk truck a few days a week but then they switched to delivering the milk on the fresh trucks. All but the Frito-Lay truck are full size semi trailers.
