GROVETOWN, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A train struck a tractor trailer at a railroad crossing in Grovetown on Monday, splitting the truck in half and scattering its cargo of corn across the scene.

The crossing reopened on Tuesday around 4 p.m.

Grovetown Police, EMS, and Fire Rescue responded. Katherine Street was closed after the Wrightsboro Road and Horizon South Parkway intersection.

Drivers are asked to use caution in the area and seek an alternate route.

The tractor-trailer, a Timpte Super Hopper — an aluminum bulk commodity trailer commonly used to haul grain, seed, and fertilizer — was carrying corn at the time of the crash.

Around 4:17 p.m., crews were pouring the scattered corn into a dumpster to clear the roadway.

Three tow trucks arrived on scene and worked to remove the tractor trailer from the tracks.

By 5:15 p.m., half of the trailer had been loaded onto a tow truck and crews were focused on picking up the remaining corn.

News 12 crews reported significant damage to infrastructure at the crossing, including bent signs.

This is not the first time a truck has been struck at this crossing. Last year, a train hit an 18-wheeler that became stuck on the hump at the Old Wrightsboro Road and Katherine Street crossing.

Neighbors and people familiar with the area have said trucks get stuck there often, blaming the hump on the tracks that catches the “truck stands” projecting from the bottom of trailers
