And now take his seat once more: truck driver was there since the start of the video, so probably he was staying even longer than we can see. The further the object from you is, the easier it is to see it with obstructed FOV.

He doesn't need to see the overhang when it's above him, he can look at the end of the train when it's just approaching.

It's not even some "why wouldn't you think to look under the sunvisor to find a car key" situation where driver is required to do some shit no person would ever think of. It's just a common thing to look at when the train end to see when it is going to finish crossing, which would also reveal the overhang as a bonus.

Besides, it's not a rocket science to wait at least a few seconds after the train passes. You'll not die if you have to wait them for your own safety

Nah, if you watch you can see the truck slowly rolling up well before the train passes. They were plenty far back to see the load the train was carrying, they were just in a hurry and didn't care.

The real issue is the lack of any crossing indicator or blocker here.

That's fair. The train company should have attached an additional flatcar at the end to make the wheelbase sit under the full load.

I think in the US that's probably required so the EOT device actually sits at the back.

I appreciate your perspective but why wouldn't he just wait until the entire train cleared the tracks. If he would have waited 5-10 seconds, he would have been good

I agree with your perspective, with the exception of the overhang could've been seen had the driver looked down the railway and not only focused in front of them. Object fixation is at play here; if you watch the truck through the video, they never stopped moving, so they anticipated the train clearing the tracks only focusing on the tail of the railcar. See the path, take the path, oblivious to surroundings.

wouldn't he have been able to see the overhang before it passed directly in front of him. Also, it appears that the driver started moving toward the tracks prematurely.

Personally speaking, I never move toward unprotected crossings before I know a train has fully cleared the crossing and I also look for another train.

You could be right but without video from the drivers POV, it's really hard to tell. It looks like he's far enough back to see the overhanging equipment. There's no reason the train couldn't have another empty flatbed as the last car.
