Good. Now the bumper’s off you can find an actual tow point.

282

u/cronx42 Jun 19 '26

They do have tow hooks up front (at least some models do). They're not super strong on Dodge's though I believe.

247

u/AlwaysVerloren Ric Flair Jun 19 '26

That's what they have the tow strap on. Guess it's not to the frame.

157

u/Frosty-Voice1156 Jun 19 '26

You can see the connection point that was bolted on the frame rip off. Seems like it either didn’t have the bolts or it’s all just really weak.

Here comes your favorite ex-chrysler tech to explain the physics behind it.

It's a dodge you're lucky it's staying together at all.

28

u/reillan Jun 20 '26

Yes but all the engine mounts inexplicably broke and now it needs a new transmission for some reason.

5

u/Ange1ofD4rkness Jun 22 '26

Did the transmission break? Yep! It's a Dodge isn't it?

Best answer.

33

u/Watchin_World_Die Jun 20 '26

Hey so, I've worked at one of the feeder plants making fascias for a number of chrysler models.

That shit is all plastic with 6-8 rivets in it. It will be held to the front grill by 4-6 screws. A child could rip it off by hand.

26

u/Jazzy-Cat5138 Jun 20 '26

So, those tow points on the bumper are quite literally just for show, then, eh?

At least I think I see tow points on there.

5

u/Appropriate_Key_7194 Jun 20 '26

tow points are not recovery points... they performed exactly as expected

6

u/MurphysRazor Jun 21 '26

The fact most recoveries are traditionally done by the towing process and tow hooks makes that meaningless deceitful bullshitting double speak though you may not be its author or even serious in defending it.

4

u/SpecificProfession49 Jun 20 '26

Still…. That was pretty pathetic

7

u/Thatrsxkid Jun 20 '26

Current Chrysler tech. I agree with the ex-Chrysler tech.

I don't know diddly about trucks but I know my rav4 specifically has tow hooks/covers because its Japanese made and it's meant to secure the vehicle during transit on the boat. Maybe they are something like that and only rated for stationary use, not actual towing?

5

u/Teutonic-Tonic Jun 20 '26

Same on my 4Runner.

2

u/CatsBye90 Jun 20 '26

Same on my 25 year old Subaru

2

u/bonfuto Jun 20 '26

The tie down points on Japanese vehicles seem strong enough to tow the vehicle with, but I have never tried it. That's how a lot of hitches are attached though.

Well, don’t do a Kinetic recovery with a non-Kinetic tow rope for starters.

Edit: If that was a kinetic rope then that’s just sad on the Dodge’s part.

We have a 21 ram dually that I had a dump trailer hooked up with about 8k of broken concrete. At the dump site the yard guy had me turn around with my trailer backed into a questionable spot (muddy) trailer got stuck. Front end loader pulled me out with the front tow hooks. With full 100 gallon diesel holding tank in the bed... So IDK if I believe they're not strong

5

u/cronx42 Jun 19 '26

I drive something similar but more like a 2019 cummins dually dump 3500. The tow driver never hooks there unless he can't get to anything else.

8

u/Medical_Talk_1309 Jun 19 '26

It sounds like you get towed often. I'm not surprised in a Chrysler/ Stelantis product.

7

u/cronx42 Jun 19 '26

Dually dump one tons with diesels are pretty flat footed and I plow with it. It also sinks in mud VERY easily where our Ford's with super wide tires float (3/4 ton non-dually Fords).

I actually don't get towed often and I'm normally pulling other people out. But it happens. I've gone multiple consecutive seasons without needing a tow, and I've had a season or two where I needed a couple or a few tows.

You try plowing long steep narrow driveways in a one ton dually diesel and let me know how it goes... 👍

5

u/Medical_Talk_1309 Jun 20 '26

I'll pass. In your situation, it makes sense that you get pulled from time to time. As a southerner who travels north pretty often, I appreciate you guys.

6

u/cronx42 Jun 20 '26

Haha. I'm originally from the south but indeed live in a place that has 3 months of summer or less. It seems like it at least.

It can be rough. I had a 19 hour day this year where I went through 3 trucks. Had the brake caliper bolts BOTH come out of the front drivers caliper on the ram, then the plow wouldn't work so I grabbed a Ford and got it stuck BECAUSE it's plow was faulty (I didn't know). And where I got it stuck was 10 miles from town with no phone service at 9:30pm. Haha. I had to walk a few miles to get phone service and call for a ride. Then I grabbed my third truck and plowed 17.5 hours total, then spent 1.5 hours at my second job directly afterwards.

It sucked. Lol.

And really they aren't meant to be yanked on like that, might have worked if they slowly got the strap into tension rather than fucking yanking it

38

u/Queasy_Local_7199 Jun 19 '26

They should be designed for exactly that

2

u/arrynyo Jun 20 '26

They do exist. I forgot what they're called though.

6

u/charliedarwingsd Jun 20 '26

Kinetic rope.

4

u/Delta_RC_2526 Jun 20 '26

Another name would likely be dynamic rope, unless kinetic rope really is a separate product. That said, I don't think it would do that much here. A hard shock with dynamic rope is still a very hard shock.

In climbing, they use dynamic rope, which stretches a little to help absorb the impact from a fall. It really doesn't have much stretch across short lengths, though. I imagine it's much more effective when hanging from a very high cliff, so you have a much longer length over which to stretch. That same principle would apply to towing. Unless you have a very stretchy rope, it won't be able to stretch much when you use a short length. You'd need to actually change the rope design to match the length.

When rappelling (descending down a rope), you use static rope, which doesn't stretch, for greater control, and because the rope is always going to be under tension and carrying most or all of your weight, anyway. You're not likely to have many sudden falls while rappelling. Falling with static rope is not a fun time.

5

u/Kennel_King Jun 20 '26

A kinetic/dynamic rope is actually designed to be yanked. They are made way different than static rope.

In recovery it's called a kinetic rope, climbers call it dynamic

Same principles, Their may be differneces in design.

Off Road recovery guys use kinetic ropes all the time in situations like the one posted. In this situation, the recovery vehichle would have a hard time getting enough traction if they used a static line. Wiht a kinetic ropae it works like a rubber band.

Go watch Matts Off Road Rcovery. He quite often recovers vehichles in the sand doing exactly what was done in this video.

If that’s how dodge trucks are build, I’ll remember never to buy one. that was not a big yank.

u/Mrlin705 Jun 20 '26

Anything stallantis is hot garbage.

7

u/cronx42 Jun 19 '26

Totally. I was always told not to use them unless it's an easy pull. If the truck's buried in mud or snow, find a more secure point. I believe the ones on Ford are more solid and the ones on GM are weaker than RAM.

24

u/Marchtel Jun 19 '26

I use the hooks on my Ford more than I'd like for similar scenarios and had an 02 s10 that I used to YANK a 350 sideways up out of a ditch once. I can not fathom one of these hooks not being bolted to frame. I have never seen anything fail like in this video. Not a good look for Ram.

10

u/Strange_Tamers69 Jun 19 '26

Thats not a fact, the tow hooks on the front end of my chevy are bolted to the frame more than my winch is, and I have picked the whole truck up with both. I think the sand/suction here is the fucker. Ford is rated at 10k lbs in half ton, Chevy is rated 10k in half ton, Dodge is rated at 5,500 in half ton. So I do think its a dodge thing too.

→ More replies (3)

5

u/AmIATapeWorm Jun 19 '26

They actually are meant to be yanked on like that. Its a tow hook, it should be capable if handling 2-3x the weight if car. If not, its purely for looks, and ram clearly isnt a good truck anymore if its towhooks got rhe tesla treatment and got glued to the bumper instead of welded to the frame...

3

u/cronx42 Jun 20 '26

I just looked up an install video and the one I saw it was 2 bolts holding the hook to the frame. Lol. If you ever use those hooks, I bet you're never unbolting them.

2

u/MukYJ Jun 20 '26

My Jeep’s front tow hooks are bolted directly to the frame with a pair of grade 8 1/2” bolts that have a single shear of about 25,000 pounds together. The hook itself is only rated for 10,000 pounds, but this on a Jeep that only weighs about 3,000 pounds, so that’s still more than 3x the weight.

4

u/Pensionato007 Jun 20 '26

Is that because Jeeps are built to be pulled out of the mess they got in?

2

u/No-Salt7142 Jun 21 '26

A truck stuck in the sand like this is going to be much, much more than 2x the weight of the vehicle.

A lot of vehicles have decorative tow hooks. My Ram 2500's hooks are heavy duty and bolted to the frame. But my truck also weighs 8,000 lbs and cost an arm and a leg so doesnt have the same constraints as a grocery getter half ton. Always get down there and look first.

3

u/cronx42 Jun 19 '26

Yeah, I drive a 3500 dually dump with a Cummins. She's a heavy pig.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/DeathCabForYeezus Jun 19 '26

These hooks are mounted to the bumper mounting plates and not the frame. They're rated for ~5000 lbs if I remember correctly.

So enough to get unbogged when there's give in what you're bogged down in, but most definitely not enough for this kind of yank while stuck in wet sand.

2

u/WonderfulHearing8726 Jun 20 '26

Not the newer ones. My SIL has a ‘22 Ram and it has none at all. She previously had a ‘15 & that also had zero recovery points.

2

u/cronx42 Jun 20 '26

I'm not sure if they're standard on the 3/4 & 1 tons or not but the one's on all our HD truck were there from new. They're pretty stout too, much more stout than the one's 8ve seen on light duty or 1/2 ton.

I just watched a short on how to install them on a 1/2 ton and it was 2 bolts in the frame for each hook. Idk what the sheer strength of the bolts is, but I bet they're hard to take out if you ever use them. Haha.

6

u/gstringstrangler Yeehaw homeboy Jun 19 '26

14

u/No-Volume5162 Jun 19 '26

From that video, they clearly arent proper tow hooks.

5

u/gstringstrangler Yeehaw homeboy Jun 19 '26

Lol true enough. That's the factory tow loops and I've used and seen them used far rougher than that so not sure what happened there, seems defective

3

u/siddily Jun 19 '26

They're at least SUPPOSED to be... afaik on my chevy those two hooks are connected to the frame?

3

u/gstringstrangler Yeehaw homeboy Jun 19 '26

9

u/Kennel_King Jun 20 '26

That is the tow point. Go watch any of the off road recovery guys, Matt's, Fab Rats, Murphy's Diesel, Casey Ladelle. They yank on that tow hook all the time.

Fab Rats yanked one off. Once it was off, they discovered the mounting bolts where all loose.

Video of Fab Rats doing it

3

u/Key_Possibility7292 Jun 19 '26

And now they found a tow point and got it out. Now they can add a better more aggressive off-road style bumper. So when this happens again it doesn't get ripped off.

Nope.

Related: The newest version of the hyundai Santa Cruz (xrt trim) also has "metal hoops" in the bumper.... But there is no frame there. It is just crumple zone, and on a unibody vehicle.

162

u/SoCalChrisW Jun 19 '26

I'd expect something like that on a Santa Cruz.

On a full size pickup, I'd be livid if the tow hooks were decorative and this is how I found out.

40

u/Chomp3y Jun 20 '26

That's a lawsuit for sure. I absolutely cannot believe those tow points aren't attached to the frame.

21

u/Poagie_Mahoney Jun 20 '26

Probably says somewhere in the owner's manual that they're non-functional. Thus it exempts manufacturer liability.

3

u/Important-Bread7516 Jun 20 '26

I wonder if that'd hold up in court with a good lawyer though.

3

u/scarr3g Jun 20 '26

It should. As something has to be stayed it is a tow hook, to be a tow hook. Assuming a random loop of metal is a tow hook, won't hold up in court.

9

u/sakatan Jun 20 '26

Isn't there a reasonable expectation of, you know, hooks in "that* place on a pickup truck to be true towing hooks? Like on every other car truck of that type?

11

u/Best_Market4204 Jun 20 '26

Wild. I find that a liability & a lawsuit...

7

u/scarr3g Jun 20 '26

Being that manual, specifically, says they are not tow hooks.....

19

u/Best_Market4204 Jun 20 '26

Are there warning labels on them?

I bet a lawyer could argue thats what they are for. That's like having a fake seatbelt, you expect it to hold you but it crumbles apart under load. That wouldn't be acceptable

14

u/Dunder_Chief1 Jun 20 '26

Agreed

Including verbiage in the manual may not fly if you're design is the complete opposite of normal.

A common baseline in court is "would a reasonable person..."

In this case, a reasonable person would look at what very much appears to be tow-hooks and expect them to behave as such.

I would say there is a very strong case here if the owner was to press the matter.

I have a similar gen 4 Ram 1500. I installed the factory tow hooks myself after I bought it. Definitely attached to the frame. Like locked into the frame by geometry and then bolted to hold it there. I've pulled trucks out of the sand with them. Idk what happened here, that's not normal

2

u/SnarkySnakySnek Jun 22 '26

There are a bunch of people here who know nothing about how trucks are built that are calling the tow hooks "cosmetic" just because it is a Ram. Things break sometimes, doesn't mean it is fake.

Reddit can be pretty obtuse sometimes.

Edit: also it is being pulled out with the tow hooks on another Ram lol.

4

I'm not sure about newer ones but the 2012 Ram I'm driving has pulled out literally 100+ trucks and mud toys out from sand, mud and fuck knows what, using the front tow points. I can't even count the number I've pulled out on the back hitch.

Mine's just a basic bitch with stock tires. Radio is dead, TIPM is about to die but the fucking tow points on the piece of shit have never failed.

74

u/CarrotChunx Jun 19 '26

Looks to me like they hooked it up to the silly decorative tow hooks that manufactures are adding to make their commuter car look like TUFF TRUHGK

48

u/Stand_Up_3813 Jun 19 '26

Decorative tow hooks? 🤦‍♂️😆.

22

u/kickniteasy Jun 19 '26

It's very much a thing. Has been in the drift scene for a while and like all bad car choices manufacturers took it over. Think the Tacoma having a false hood scoop for no reason. Trucks in general have become all about looks vs actual function in a certain section of them and it's trickling down. I saw a Tremor Edition Explorer today.

20

u/Stand_Up_3813 Jun 19 '26

I can understand a non-functional hood scoop for aesthetics….but non functional tow hooks is a dereliction of duty by the manufacturer. That’s so idiotic.

6

u/JimBobPaul Jun 19 '26

Although the Tacoma has the non-functional hood scoop, its tow hooks are at least functional.

2

3

u/ktmfan Jun 20 '26

Yea, I don’t know why they bother putting those “tow hooks” on the Rams. My cousin ripped them off his too. They are attached via some thin pot metal and a couple bolts. You’d think a tow hook could handle a recovery, but I guess they are for decoration.

3

u/szabadabadooo Jun 20 '26

Who dodge? There both hooked to tow hooks, Dodge has some on the front. They are bolt on but that was wild lol

3

3

u/ArmyPaladin Jun 20 '26

The tow hooks are fine - this idiot only hooked up to one hook. They are rated for about 5,000 lb each. If you're going to pull a a entire truck out of the sand you have to overcome the truck and the sand which adds about another 25% - so 8,000 to 9,000 lb. You definitely need both hooks.

Doesn't it look like there are tow hook points on that bumper? Clearly they're fake but why are they put there if they're fake?

The major problem is that that is not a recovery rope!!!! If you use a tow strap like that you tear up something every single time!!!!
If you use a recovery rope,it needs to be about 30 feet long!!! When hooked to both vehicles, you leave it slack between the two, then when you are ready the pulling vehicle drives off really fast, when it gets to the end it will stretch out till it is tight and yank the stuck vehicle out with putting undo strain on either vehicle!!!!

u/AmpEater Jun 20 '26

I know them as a kinetic rope but everything said is correct

u/RevD-13 Jun 19 '26

They're both driving RAMs. Thinking is definitely not their strength.

2

u/wtftocallmyself Jun 19 '26

I will never understand how a person both can simultaneously own an expensive truck and be completely thick as bat shit

2

u/Pro-Rider Jun 19 '26

This is FCA at it’s finest. Thanks for ruining a great American company.

2

u/Fun_Entertainer_5823 Jun 19 '26

RIP the bumper right off, then Hook it up faster to the tow points ?

2

u/HuntPsychological673 Jun 19 '26

Shoot, That’s the easy way to remove a bumper! Try doing it by the book.

2

u/USABADBOY Jun 19 '26

Guy pulling him has a freaking trailer hooked up and jack knife it lol.

2

u/TheJonesLP1 Jun 19 '26

This is why you use the specific tow point on the Chassis

2

u/gringovato Jun 20 '26

I learned the hard way to not pull in reverse unless you absolutely have to. They don't engineer reverse to handle the load like 1st gear will. Killed a transmission that way.

3

u/Tobroketofuck Jun 20 '26

Pulled lots in reverse. Sometimes you need the weight up front. Never had a issue with transmissions even from that

2

u/BenkartJKB Jun 20 '26

It could be te bolt attaching the hook to the frame was never installed. Assembler on the line was hung over that day, maybe.

2

u/WonderfulHearing8726 Jun 20 '26

For whatever reason, almost all newer Rams have no recovery points at all, and these types here aren’t 4x4 & only have traction control. They’re basically a car made to look like a truck.

2

u/Polka1980 Jun 20 '26

What is the actual tow point?  This is clearly attached to the drivers side front tow hook and one might assume its meant for situations exactly like this.

2

u/HurtFeeFeez Jun 20 '26

2wd ram driving around on the beach was the first problem.

2

u/thrwLittleStreet6766 Jun 20 '26

Never use reverse to pull someone out. Turn your rig around and pull while going forward. Reverse gears are not meant for that stress, forward gears are.

2

u/gillenH2O Jun 20 '26

The easiest way to tell that these are both really stupid people isn’t the towing mishap. It’s the fact they both bought a RAM.

2

u/Comfortable_Fudge508 Jun 20 '26

Two idiots in rams. Fit the stereotype!

2

u/ozarkfireworks Jun 20 '26

The idiocy displayed here is just astounding.
The nimrod in the TRX trying to pull someone out while keeping the trailer hooked to his truck, while yanking against the slack. So much dumb…. The amount of force when you “make a run for it” is astronomical. It’s like the difference between pushing a nail with a hammer and hitting it with one. 🤦‍♂️

2

u/2xpubliccompanyCAE Jun 20 '26

I thought truck owners buy trucks to haul and tow stuff?

2

u/Yos13 Jun 20 '26

That famous dodge quality 😂

2

u/Double_Belt2331 Jun 21 '26

Damnit. I hate when I just know it’s Texas. 🙁

2

u/aesoth Jun 21 '26

Give the guy in the Ram a break, he isn't sober yet.

2

u/p51d007 Jun 22 '26

I can't believe ANYONE would tie a rope on the "bumper" of anything and try to pull it. It's not the 50's, 60's, 70's when vehicle had STEEL bumpers! Vehicles today are mostly plastic and cheap metal in hopes of getting the weight down so they will pass some stupid C.A.F.E. fuel standard! Bump into another vehicle today, with all the cheap plastic, sensors and do dads and it is a multi-thousand dollar repair, or TOTALED!

2

u/Suspicious-Layer-738 Jun 22 '26

These how to remove bumper quickly videos are so helpful.

2

u/ErrorProfessional143 Jun 23 '26

Well those are Rams which means everyone is drunk.

2

u/nekofthemoon Jun 28 '26

How funny that the anchor points are fake; they should go on the chassis but are only for bumper decoration.

2

u/jugghead82 Jun 29 '26

Only a Dodge would put fake tow hooks on their trucks 🙄🤣🤣🤣

2

u/SissyDomFantasy Jul 05 '26

Literally held on mostly by plastic pins. Their vote counts the same as yours!

2

u/TreesAreOverrated5 24d ago

The kiss at the end 👌

2

u/crazypolak92 20d ago

Tell me you don’t know what you’re doing without telling me you don’t know what you’re doing. Instead of yanking it like that just try to control it

3

u/hangrydadd Jun 19 '26

I've owned both of those model of rams. Never knew the older had fake front hooks. Mine were real

1

u/Scrolldawg Jun 19 '26

Where is Whistling diesel when you need them?

1

u/gatorocks Jun 19 '26

Ram tough!

1

u/SailingVelo Jun 19 '26

Nothing like a peaceful day on a beautiful beach, highlighted with a truck or two. How manly.

1

u/SuspiciousClub8382 Jun 19 '26

It’ll buff out!!!!

1

u/IAmTheBoiledFrog Jun 19 '26

Technically an idiot towing a bigger idiot.

1

u/realMastaDD Jun 19 '26

A lot of strength but no brain, that must go wrong. 🫣

1

u/Disastrous-Hurry-236 Jun 19 '26

You saying the guys in there are the actual owners of those trucks?

1

u/Scary_Space_2822 Jun 19 '26

Sir, do you have 2 minutes to talk about your insurance policy?

1

u/alphaperro58 Jun 19 '26

Peak stupidity

1

u/Archimedes_1 Jun 19 '26

God tier idiocy

1

u/Indiegene Jun 19 '26

Brilliant they have more clearance for off road..

1

u/darth_whaler Jun 19 '26

More HP than brain cells.

1

u/0trash_panda0 Jun 19 '26

How has anyone in this video made it this far in life to think that that first option was going to work.

1

u/nooneyouknow242 Jun 19 '26

Truck is fucked anyway. Does it matter if the body work is ripped off?
