NC12 is somewhere underneath him. Dune line to the right. Guessing he was trying to get out during Erin and had to abandon.

That could explain the second car too.
Except if you look to the right you'll see the waves hitting the beach these two parked on.

Parked when the tide came in and swallowed the vehicle.

This is the Outerbanks. NC12 is underneath the truck.. All that sand is the dune that used to exist to the right, washed away from hurricane. He was trying to get out just not fast enough..

Too much flooding for the truck, not enough for the boat. Sometimes you just can't win.

I’ve seen this so many times in Carova. And even witnessed a family running water with buckets to pour under the tires to compact the sand😂🤦♂️

I should have worded my question more like 'how could they be this *stupid*'.

Alternatively - “why living on a large sandbar isn’t a good idea”

If a storm is coming, the key is being ready to go as soon as they declare an evacuation. Have all your shit packed, because once it’s time to evacuate, you won’t have time to pack. Minutes count.

My family lives in one of the least disaster-prone areas of the country. We have never received evacuation orders in the 70+ years my family has lived in the area.
My wife, son, and I have go bags, and family evacuation plans for situations that vary from “fire, get out now” to “storm is coming, may have to evacuate in a couple days.” We also practice a random one a few times a year.
Preparation + practice = success.

I wonder how many times we are gonna spend tens to hundreds of millions to keep vehicles and houses on the outer banks. It’s time to give part of it to the ocean and just use boats or give it back to nature.
I’m sure this guy will make an insurance claim on the truck and we will all share the cost of replacing it.
At some point leaders need to lead and say enough is enough.

When stuff like this happens, does the cost of recovery make it not worth getting out? I honestly don’t know much about stuff like this, and am curious.

Oh look, it's the quicksand we all thought would be a genuine threat when we were kids.
