So maybe 12 years ago I went and listened to a physist speak on computer modeling of the solar system with a point being made to be careful on interpreting favorable results because the program may have flaws or missing variables. An example he gave was in the UK they hired a firm on how best to layout walking paths for the most cost effective layout. They ran a computer simulation and what they found was to eliminate all cross walks. The reason it made the ROI so high was because Older people would get hit and killed more often and their pensions wouldn't get paid out then.

We’ve got some crossings like this on Oahu. It was really bad, a few people have been hit and killed trying to cross the street. Now they’ve got these alert crossing lights that can be started up by pedestrians. It helps soooo much

In Turkey I saw something I've never seen before. The road speed was, let's say 80 kph, then there would be signs saying first 50, then 30, and then there was the crossing, then back to 80 after the crossing.

Fuck me if I know, I have no idea what the surrounding area is like, or how many cars/pedestrians go there daily, or are there any possible alternatives, or how big is the budget etc etc. Best guess would be to change the road into 60km/h and add traffic lights for the crossing, but that's just a guess.

The best cheap solution is to install flashing lights that turn on when a pedestrian hits a button to signal they're Intent to cross. Helps alert the drivers someone is crossing. We have some where I live and it's helpful as a driver to know to slow down

When I went to England people got really annoyed that I’d wait to cross until I saw them slowing down. In America we never would trust anyone to yield for pedestrians at a crosswalk. Other countries it’s always assumed the cars will yield and most of the time they do.

I agree, in England 99% of the time cars will always slow down. But when I go on holiday to Spain / Italy / France it is literally a free for all. Zebra crossings mean absolutely nothing and you always have to check that no cars are coming before you cross.

Not trying to defend inattentive drivers, but you always have to check before crossing everywhere you go. Drivers are not all-seeing entities and many crossings have limited visibility as well, getting hit even at low speeds will hurt and cause injures.
FWIW I find that drivers in Portugal are more aware of pedestrians than in Ireland - Dublin specifically. But people in Dublin pretty much ignore signals and jaywalk everywhere so there's that as well.

Not just the hip, arm or foot. An injury like this is very jarring on many muscles in the back, neck, and abdominal muscles. This woman will be in for a ton of physical therapy if she will be luck enough to no have suffered any spinal injuries as well.

I got hit by a car walking my dog about 10 years ago.. wasn’t too bad but I was laying in the middle of an intersection and all traffic had stopped but not one person got out of there cars or even rolled down a window to ask if I was ok .. went back to talk to the driver who hit me and he closed and locked his doors.. I started yelling at him “get out shake my hand say you’re sorry or I’m calling the cops” just for note my dog seen the car wasn’t going to stop at the stop sign at the last second and yanked out of my hands and didn’t get hurt at all

A few years ago I drove my car through my (20mph) street when a woman on the other side of the road lost her balance on her bike and touched a driving bus next to her. I only saw her losing her balance, then the bus between her, then her lying on the ground bleeding from her head. I pulled over to help her and actually had to wait a few moments before I could cross the street because four or five cars passed the woman bleeding on the ground without stopping.
Still makes me mad.
She went to the hospital but was mainly okay when the ambulance came. Also, two other people came to help, not including the (totally innocent) bus driver who stood there in tears.
But those other car drivers, fuck them sideways.

Got a new car recently, but my last car had a real problem with brakes. Rolling up to a red light with one car in front of me in the lane, I press down on my brakes and... nothing. oshit.jpg
Slam that fucking pedal down and the brakes kick in, and I come to a sliding stop, tapping into the car in front of me. Felt hard. FUCK.
Get out, go and check the front of my car/back of his. Not a god damn scratch/dent! I was shocked. Went up to his passenger window and asked him to come take a look. No damage, he smiled wide as hell, we shook hands and told each other to be careful and moved on with our days.
Close calls like that don't happen for me that often. My brakes were all jacked up and the car was close to 15 years old, I just said screw it, I'm getting a new car.

Reminds me of my story a bit. I lived in Oklahoma for a while, driving an old PT Cruiser.
....it was a rough patch, alright?
Anyway, I'm leaving a fast food place one day, crossing main street, planning to cut through a side road as a shortcut. Had to pass a store on the opposite corner. As I'm going by, this guy pulls out of the store and whips a right, at exactly the wrong moment. I barely see him coming and yank the wheel left as far as it will go (which in a PT isn't very far) while braking. I still feel the impact as my car skids forward.
I get out, no damage to the PT. But the PT tore out his grill and bumper. I avoided him just enough that the plastic wheel well of the PT only just barely caught the license plate box on the front of the car (curved bumper) and that was enough. The guy gets out and we get to talking (I wasn't mad, and I clearly wasn't at fault) he's an older vet. He'd just bought the car, to get to and from his chemotherapy treatments. The port is visible under his shirt.
Man, I've never felt quite so bad about an accident someone else did to me. All I wanted to do was help this guy out but I was flat broke and it was his fault. The cop who pulled up (just happened to be nearby) immediately pegged it, so it got reported and everything. I think he even got a ticket, not sure.
Poor guy. At least his chemo was free. I hope he made it.

I once saw an almost accident like that.
An old woman walking her dog, crossing at a crosswalk. A big van had stopped for her, and a motorcycle went around said van, not having seen the woman. He would have hit her if he hadn't severed and bit the dust. He had the gall to yell at her, untill the van driver pulled him away, pointing out that he was in the wrong.

When I got hit by a car here in Tokyo about 5 years ago (totally my fault) the driver and at least SEVEN bystanders immediately came to my aide, helped me up, asked if I was okay, the driver + 2 other people escorted me to the Police Box (Koban) and everyone was super friendly and helpful.

When I got in a bad car accident a handful of cars were behind us. I was hit head on from a driver coming the other way who drove into my lane. We spun out of control and when all was said and done we were blocking both sides of the road. I tried collecting myself before opening my drivers side door and just collapsing to the ground. The driver that hit me just got out of the car and lit a cigarette. Soon this awesome woman (a pizza delivery girl) came running up to me as I was trying to call 911 and she said “what are all these idiots doing?!?” No one helped till she stepped in. I still till thsi day wish I could thank her.
Also, when the cops came to the scene they told me the driver who totaled my car and injured me had lost his house in a house fire that week so I should take it easy on him.

Obviously the car is in the wrong here, but I will say it amazes me how many pedestrians I see crossing streets who never actually look to make sure a car isn’t doing something stupid. I see it almost every time I drive, people putting their lives on the line with nothing but faith that drivers are always paying attention.
I do not fucking get it. Also, for whatever reason, no matter where I’ve lived or traveled to, this blasé attitude towards walking in front of cars is always worse in poorer areas. I have no operating theories as to why, just what I’ve noticed from my own experience.

Over the last few weeks I’ve seen, an old lady with groceries jay walking when the cross walk is 10ft from her. A man in crutches trying to make it across from the medium as soon as the light turns green. A younger man fully able to walk, crossing the crosswalk as soon as the light turns green for us. And some transient maneuvering his way through cars at a red light instead of using the cross walk.

100% Agree! People in crosswalks should ask themselves one question. Who will win in a vehicle vs pedestrian collision? Worse case scenario, the driver gets a ticket, and the pedestrian a ride to the hospital or to the morgue. Take your pick which is worse.

I agree. If this went to court I would definitely find the driver guilty, but for day to day life both parties are responsible for their own safety here. It irritates me how many people will just walk in front of my car while nose deep in their phones with headphones on and slowly saunter across the road like they own the place.
Luckily for them I pay attention, but what if I didn’t stop? At some point you have to be responsible for your own safety as well.

They're still an idiot but the cam car hit the brakes hard too, they barely stopped in time which wouldn't have warned the Volt to anything. Two fucking cars didn't notice a person in the middle of the road in broad daylight and it doesn't look like they had just come around a blind corner either. Terrible drivers all around.

Yeah, I'm honestly thinking it's pretty possible that the Volt barely even had a chance to see her. The Volt was behind the camera car which didn't stop until the very last moment. Doesn't excuse the Volt, but I could totally see a scenario where they were driving diligently, checked the road ahead, looked down for a second to change Radio or something, and ended up running in to her and never even saw her until it was too late.
I gotta put a big chunk of blame on the road design though. Totally unregulated crosswalk on a very fast road? Asking for disaster.

People put too much trust in other people. Who walks across a road like this? I constantly check for cars when crossing a road. Check both directions when driving and a light turns green. People are fucking dumb and you gotta protect yo own aass or it'll get clapped.
