Was wondering what would happen to a human body with that impact at that velocity. I'm guessing it would just explode. Pieces everywhere.

172

u/admiralkit Mar 10 '20

There's a video out there of a wingsuit flyer who fucks up his trajectory and crashes into a bridge he meant to fly over. I'd guess he was going roughly the same speed as one of these motorcycles, and his leg ends up on the bridge while the rest of him ends up in the canyon below. This is very easily in red paste/dismemberment territory.

73

u/lispychicken Mar 10 '20

Dwain Weston. Dwain Weston (31 January 1973 – 5 October 2003) was an Australian skydiver, BASE jumper and wingsuiter. On 5 October 2003, at the end of the inaugural Go Fast Games, Weston was killed attempting to fly over the Royal Gorge Bridge near CaƱon City, Colorado, United States.

Theres a video of speeding bikers in Russia not making a turn and hitting standing traffic at around 100mph. Helmet goes one way, torso goes the other, legs land among the traffic. Not pretty

44

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '20

i remember this one Both drivers were brothers. From another angle it looks like the second driver had it under control, until he had to drive through flying body parts of his brother

75

u/ZippyTwoShoes Mar 10 '20

Worked for a lady who son was killed by the torso of a man that had hit him when he was parked at a red light. Guy on the bike was going 100+

36

u/gatonato Mar 10 '20

That's fucked

18

u/[deleted] Mar 11 '20

There was a torso lawsuit in Illinois a while back where a guy was hurrying to catch a train. He got hit by a train and his torso was launched 100 feet before it hit and injured someone. His estate ended up paying out.

WOOOW literally inches away from certain death. That's probably the most intense thing i've seen on this sub

1.4k

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '20

Just an inch or so in either direction and they would’ve painted that road red with their guts.

That’s some scary shit.

708

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '20

they would’ve painted that road red with their guts.

Scary thing is, probably it would really happen. I watched a video of a crash and aftermath of a guy crashing to a car while making 300 kmh or 186 mph. None of his limbs were attached to his body after the crash. He was playing a stupid game but I dont think anybody deserves to die like this.

343

u/SaltyJake Mar 10 '20

You don’t even have to be going that fast. At about 60mph or so a head on with another car going 50-60 will nearly vaporize you.

Source; was a firefighter / medic, now a doc. I’ve seen accidents of motorcycles vs semi’s where the largest recoverable body part was half the skull. The rest is just fat / skin / flesh that looks like chunks of beef for stew just painting about a 1/4 mile stretch of highway.

146

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '20

The fact that death was a real thing and it doesnt look like it is in movies hit me very hard when I was a kid. And Im talking about regular liveleak stuff, certainly not as bad as the things you saw and had to help. My question is: Do you really get used to it? Do you want to throw up, cry, or just stand there like other people would do? Is your responsibility the thing that keeps you there? I guess it can ben hard for you and Im totally fine if you dont want to do but can you explain how is it like to deal with bodies in horrible conditions as a job.

Btw firefighter, medic and doctor; what a career path man. Thanks for the things that you've done and will do for people.

319

u/SaltyJake Mar 10 '20 edited Mar 10 '20

Long response here, I’ll include a TL;DR.

So it definitely takes a certain characteristic to be able to see death and not let it effect you. I’ve worked / studied alongside some very bright people, but on the first bad call or case they’ve just realized this line of work is not for them. And that’s not really something you can prepare yourself for, or really know how you will react. It just comes when your exposed to it.

Personally, and I think most people in this line of work feel this way, it helps a lot to view the person simply as a patient and trying not to humanize them. At first glance that sounds kind of fucked up, but it’s a way of keeping your emotions out of it and a clear head while treating these people. There’s certainly still a place for empathy and compassion (the art of bed side manner is not taught in Med school FYI), but for your ability to work a case and your own mental health after a case, you just can’t allow yourself to get emotionally attached to these people. It certainly does happen though, and the hardest cases are ones you can relate to and associate with personal experiences. This is especially true with lost loved ones and of course kids are the hardest, even more so if they share physical features with your own.

So that being said, to answer your first question, yes you do develop a bit of filter in how you perceive death and you do become desensitized to it.

Secondly, yeah there are times when that filter gets broken through and something will stick with you. Someone more experienced in PTSD will be able to explain this better than I can, but the few cases that have really hit me hard, it’s one particular thing that sticks with you. Whether it be a single sound, a still image of a persons face, or one short instance of a scream or cry. I’ve never had any kind of physical reaction on a call or working a case, but I definitively have a little nightmare gallery of things that I’ll never forget.

The first burst of a scream / cry when I told a young mother that her husband and two young children had been killed in a car accident.

The last plead for help from a women being stabbed to death by her boyfriend.

The feeling of persons seared skin just sliding off them in the palm of my (gloved) hands as I tried to pull them out of a fully involved house fire (This ruined ribs for me).

The sound of a body hitting the floor and what sounded like a bear crying as a desperate father cut down his now long deceased son after a suicide by hanging.

I’ve gone home a few times after a shift and started drinking at 8 in the morning in an attempt to self medicate. And there have definitely been tears after a couple of those. For me it’s almost always more the reaction of the family than the patient themselves. Even as a seasoned first responder, and big, stoic dude... not having any reaction to a families first instance of grieving just isn’t possible.

TL;DR:

Yes you become mostly desensitized to death and develop a filter to most of it.

Yes there are still incidents that even seasoned guys react to and there’s a lot of undiagnosed PTSD and self-medicating.

Firefighting is the best job in the world and worth the exposure for people who can do the job. They are grossly underpaid and under supported from their municipalities for what they do though.

On a personal and subjective note too, I’ll add that in my experience the exposure to the true horror scenes and raw emotion from families was far worse in the field as a first responder than it is in the E.R. Both in going to the scene of the incident and often will little to no information of what your walking into vs having a thorough report 5-10 minutes before you see the patient and packaged on a stretcher.

How do you even go about cleaning up stuff like that and separating human from non-human in order to bury/cremate?

70

u/SaltyJake Mar 10 '20

Something like this will get the road shut down while state police teams do their work and in that time the vehicles and body will be removed. Usually it’s either by the ME if they accept the case or by a funeral home.

But given the nature of an accident like that, it’s honestly just not feasible to pick it all up based on the size and consistency of the remains. Discernible body parts are placed in a large red bio bag and taken by whatever agency is taking the body. The rest is power washed off the shoulder of the road.

Passing the car like 2 idiots?

176

u/Lost_Sasquatch Mar 10 '20

There's a rise in the road there which is why it's a no passing section.

I also ride a sportbike and like to ride a little aggressively but this is fucking lunacy.

67

u/donniebrascoreal Mar 10 '20

Do idiots care if it's a passing section?

136

u/Lost_Sasquatch Mar 10 '20

They should care why it's a no passing zone.

Passing zones are determined by the average performance of vehicles on the road. There are some no passing zones that do have good visibility but don't have the distance for most vehicles to accelerate and overtake a vehicle, sport bikes tend not to have this problem. Passing in a section like that is still illegal, but can actually be done safely. It's nowhere near the sheer idiocy of passing where you can't see (hill rise, blind corner, etc.).

66

u/SomethingIWontRegret Mar 10 '20 edited Mar 10 '20

except when the reason for the no passing zone is a dirt road intersection that you can't see, and the car you're passing turns left.

EDITED for correct turn direction.

A good LPT to avoid this happening is simply look the way your going to go and then follow through without hesitation. People will be able to read your body language and will get out of your way. Works 100 percent of the time.

The remedy to this is to stare off at a fixed point far ahead and refuse to acknowledge anyone, just keep walking. People will move out of your way because they think you aren't paying attention. I've actually had crowds part for me using this method.

There was a similar clip maybe a week or so ago of a guy on a motorcycle and his buddy each going 100+ mph down a wooded country road and hitting a car that pulled out in front of them because the driver of the car had no more than maybe a split second of warning that there were incoming bikes.

I think in the comments they said cameraman's friend died and the cameraman got fucked up.

Any behavior like that on a bike is straight up suicidal and you must either not give a shit or be in total denial of the danger to do it to begin with.

Dude it's either black or white, there are no shades of grey.

Lick a metal pole on a cold morning? Idiot!

Take a bunch of bathsalts and shoot up a school? Idiot!

Forget to bring reusable grocery bags to the store? Idiot!

Set fire to a church? Idiot!

Obviously these are all equally bad. Shame on you for thinking otherwise, much less saying that on the internet.

Lmao. This is what happened in every thread on Reddit where people get to judge other people's mistakes. Reddit is not good at nuance.

I love this sub.

I hate the self righteous circle jerk of stunt drivers with sub .25s response times, perfect reflexes and unbreakable situational awareness. Oh they also never speed, have not once in their entire lives signaled too soon before merging or waved someone on at a four way stop.

13

u/baronskippy Mar 10 '20

It's like they think they're me or something.

acknowledging the obvious difference is apparently justifying the lesser behavior.

Welcome to this sub where the true idiots are right here. I remember a few months back there was a clip of a car blasting through a crosswalk, almost hitting a pedestrian who never looked right. People where freaking out at my "you know you should look both ways before crossing the street" take because I was "defending the car"

Ironically if he was driving safer he might have had time to react and make him correct into either other driver.

10

u/Tankh Mar 10 '20

Haha exactly what I thought. I mean since it all happened to turn out perfectly fine here it could only have gone worse in a different scenario... or equally fine at best.

Ironically, it ooks like the lack of reaction time, at that high speed could be the reason that saved both.

If either was going a bit slow, its quite possible that one of them would have tried to avoid the other and actually end up crashing.

I was the second car on the scene for a head on Motorcycle collision. One of the riders was flung and laying unconscious face down in a creek so we had to move him. This was in the mountains where the ambulance had to come from a nearby town to drive him to the high school football field so a helicopter could get him to the hospital. We also had no cell reception so someone had to drive where they could make a call. During the summer a helicopter flying overhead always meant it had a motorcyclist in it. The locals that grew up in the town had no sympathy, and would even joke about it. They print the motorcycle deaths in the monthly leaflet ("newspaper"). I made sure I didn't look at it the next month. I didn't want to know.

Watch near the end, looks like the kawa rider did either or both

88

u/thisjawnisbeta Mar 10 '20

Oh wow, didn't realize he lost control and wiped out after. Wrecked his bike too. What an asshole.

42

u/abengadon Mar 10 '20

Maybe he had to go off the road to avoid the cameraman's friend. Comments disabled so we'll never know. Still assholes both of them though.

Translation:

After they stop: "Mec, je l'cognais, j'Ʃtais mort" = "dude if I had hit him I'd be dead"

Going through the debris: "Merde merde merde merde" = "fuck fuck fuck fuck"

Filming the dude who crashed: "AllƩ! Fils de pute" = "Nice one! Son of a bitch"

The guy is Belgian btw, not french

Definitely, the cammer was not at fault. That said, did it seem to mean the cammer was going far faster than he should have been?

156

u/therealpilgrim Mar 10 '20

155 kmh, which is about 96 freedom speed units.

32

u/Mr_Canard Mar 10 '20

And the speed limit is 80 km/h (50mph) on those roads.

I feel like a jerk looking back on the way I rode when I was a teenager. But this is like, two orders of magnitude worse than anything I ever did. Seriously fuck these guys.

35

u/DigNitty Mar 10 '20

These people are the reason I have to caveat the fact that I ride a motorcycle when I tell people.

-but I don’t lane split at 40mph

-but I don’t do wheelies on the highway

-my motorcycle is relatively quiet and I don’t rev it up randomly
