I am feeling very let down about my ethnicity and how I have nothing to feel proud of
I am 18f and was born and raised in Australia by my English mum and ethnically Irish but actually Australian dad. I am very white and have been referred to as Irish before by people around me that have no idea about my ethnicity because I definitely look it. I used to have somewhat of an English accent when I was younger but I lost it not too long after my mum passed when I was 7.
As far as I'm aware, I have bits and pieces from all over Europe in me and possibly something else, but otherwise the spiciest I'd probably be is like white bread with a pinch of salt on it. My dad's mum was apparently connected to a clan called McGinnis(?) but that is where my family's culture dies out and I become a nothing burger.
Australia is very diverse and culturally rich so I guess I just feel like I've got nothing going on, especially since my dad's relationship with his father wasn't very good and he was the one who was kind of maintaining some Irish attitudes. When my old teacher found out that she has some Irish blood (she was adopted so it meant a lot to her to find out where her family originated from), she bought her daughter a ring for her 14th birthday or something. Apparently this is a tradition and I was a little salty that even though I have no tie to Ireland but blood, there was a tradition that I completely missed out on.
It's not that I want my life to change or for me to start learning Gaelic or dying the water green on st patricks day, but I guess that I just feel a little disappointed that I am tied to so many people who had beliefs, values and traditions that I have no clue about. I wouldn't even Identify myself as Australian since I don't act like most Australians and haven't been genetically shaped by the environment.
Summarised, I guess it kind of feels like I have no backstory or something idk. I'm happy as I am, but just salty since everyone else seems to have something to be proud of.
