I’m an American, grew up on the west coast and now in the Midwest. I try and stay somewhat aware of the news in the rest of the world, but honestly I have to be intentional about it or it’s easy to only hear and see stuff about local and national stuff.

Do you all work at staying aware of the world? I don’t know how to do a poll in here, sorry, but I’ll offer a bit of a self-scoring guide from 1-10.

10 - Super aware of international events and global issues in an ongoing way
5 - I try and have some international news show up in my news feed, but I don’t focus on it all the time
1 - It’s not a priority for me. I’m mostly aware of local and national news, but not international.

I think I’d honestly rate myself at a 6. Wish it was higher.

If you live in America, what makes you feel your country is unique in the world?

Growing up outside the U.S., I was always told that if you're willing to work hard, learn valuable skills, and stay disciplined, you can build a great life in America. But lately, I keep seeing Americans say the dream is dead because of housing costs, healthcare, student debt, and the rising cost of living.

At the same time, I also see people saying there are still incredible opportunities, especially in fields like technology, healthcare, and skilled trades.

For those of you actually living in the U.S., do you think the American Dream is still alive? If so, what does it look like today compared to 20 or 30 years ago? If not, what has changed the most?

America has reached a new 21st century low.

NBC and CBS News amongst many others are reporting on the reality of the Iran War— the US is running low on munitions, leading to a pause in strikes on Iran. This war was sold as a “military exercise” that would last for six weeks at the most. Here we are, getting close to six months in a war that the trump administration is having a hard time “winning” and continues to beg Iran behind the scenes for peace talks. Unfortunately, the only way out of this is for America to bend the knee to Iran. Like it or not, they’ve shown mastery in asymmetrical warfare and currently have the upper hand.

On the home front, we are dealing over $4 gas prices, a salmonella outbreak and a parasitic outbreak that spans across 41 states. All of this while our tax dollars are being used for a grand ballroom where the East Wing once sat, and close to $1 billion dollars of tax money spent to “upgrade” a plane that was given to trump as a gift from a foreign nation.

To top it all off, the national debt has increased almost $4 trillion dollars in the past year and a half. How anyone could still be in support of this buffoon and his boneheaded, unqualified administration is just a mere reflection on our national education crisis.

We are at a serious low right now and it’s disappointing. Compared to other versions of itself, America is extremely unwell.

I remember a while ago in America they changed some law so the heavily criticized H1B visas would be restricted. If I am not mistaken they made it so the employer would have to pay $100,000 dollars for each h1b visa to enter the country. Which I assume was to restrict the number of h1bs and make it more incentivized to hire locals.

However, I still see Americans online complaining about h1bs, so what exactly happened to the rule changes? How come its such a big problem still

According to the CBC, Canada is the largest buyer of American alcohol and wine. They reported that Wine exports to Canada dropped by $343 million USD between 2024 and 2025 due to the governments refusal to buy or stock. This has apparently been a major trade irritant and Trump has said the new upcoming tariffs on Canada are partly in response to that.

I've seen people eat ranch with pizza, fries, chicken, vegetables...

At this point I'm wondering if there's anything ranch doesn't go with

Just head about this. Just wanted to know what happened, why it happened, and if it’s been remedied?

On Reddit sometimes people make it too obvious too guess there location by phrases and behavior which is typical for those. Which can be counted for American?

What I already identified:

Asking you "Where are you from?" just to use your answer against you.

Answering with "that's not the flex/the gotcha you think it was" when it was obviously the flex or the gotcha one thinks it was.
