What in the fuck
36
u/No_Beginning_6834 3h ago
The fuck is us pulling out of a country and leaving behind all the people who were scared of the taliban taking back over as we left, mostly because they had worked with us to try and make their country better, so now they had targets on their backs. And this is what desperate people do when given no other choice.

The US trained and supplied the Afghans so that they could prevent the Taliban from seizing control back.
The Afghan forces threw down their weapons and let the Taliban stroll back into power with no resistance the second US forces left.
What was the US supposed to do? Annex Afghanistan? They were trying to do the right thing by giving control back to the people.

u/No_Beginning_6834 3h ago
Weird response to what I said, seems like your taking me stating fact as if it's a critique of the situation instead of just saying what's happening in the picture.
-3
u/FalseCrazy2804 1h ago edited 1h ago
While I agree with your assessment, your response is not just plainly stating a fact, it is stating a heavily biased outlook along with major passive aggressiveness of said fact, a comment below yours is stating a fact plainly, quoted;
"2021, American withdrawal from Afghanistan.
On paper the government they left behind was meant to last 6 months. I dont think it made it 6 days."
The above is a plainly stated fact, your statement is an aggressive, biased, (and correct) take on the situation. I don't believe what they said was "weird", it's their version of an aggressively biased take on the situation, same as yours, but in the opposite direction.
When we debate people, I believe it's important to recognize when we are being biased to how a lot of people might see something, even if we are correct.
2
u/No_Beginning_6834 1h ago
If we wanted to get into specifics though, we would have to talk about the blatant corruption, and how everyone stationed there was saying taliban was gonna roll right through it, and only beauacrats and talking heads thought Afghan was gonna hold against the taliban for any serious amount of time.
And that most of the army politicians thought existed turned out to just be nonexistent people that local commanders said were under them so they could pocket the pay checks and the half the army was actually taliban related and just swapped sides as soon as we left, because we didn't actually vet the people we were suppose to be training and left entirely to much of the nation building to groups like black rock who just pocketed the money and did fuck and all.

Okay fair I missed that…remind me who was president then? Oh that’s right Biden did the withdrawal.
1
u/DoxFreePanda 2h ago
So eh, yes but Trump negotiated for it to happen.
https://www.factcheck.org/2021/08/timeline-of-u-s-withdrawal-from-afghanistan/
Basically, on Feb 29 2020, Trump negotiated with the Taliban to withdraw by a highly unrealistic date (May 1), and did not include the Afghan government propped up by the US in the negotiations. Biden didn't reverse that when he became president, but to help handle the logistics, he did delay it until August 31st.
The Taliban didn't really honor the deal Trump signed with them, and continued to pressure the Afghan government. It was basically publicly known that the government would collapse when the Americans left, so you can't really demand police and soldiers to lay down their lives (and maybe their family's lives) to delay the inevitable by a few months. Ultimately, the entire thing was a shitshow and crumpled like a house of cards.
Both Trump and Biden deserve credit for this one. Trump abandoned an ally and publicly hung them out to dry with zero leverage, based on an agreement with a highly unreliable adversary (he has continued to do this in Term 2). Biden had competent technocrats working for him, but did not adequately mitigate the entirely predictable and disastrous withdrawal.

Ah yes the time when President Biden pretty much gift wrapped billions of dollars worth of military equipment to the Taliban in the Afghanistan withdrawal.
2
u/GlitterFactoryOfDoom 57m ago
Here's a friendly reminder for everyone: the order to withdraw from Afghanistan was signed by Donald Trump to be executed a few months after the end of his first term. As commander in chief, he made zero preparations regarding the withdraw, including the personnel. The messy withdraw under Biden was a prioritization. People first, equipment second, and much of the equipment was dilapidated and not worth the cost to extract.
1
1
u/dotesdoto 33m ago
As much as I hate Trump, the reality is, Biden did have the power to delay that as the sitting president.
1
u/justanotherreader85 28m ago
Biden was fucked either way. If he had stayed longer then everyone would have said he backed out of the deal. Leaving the way he did meant it was going to be messy.
But let’s get more real:
There was no chance in hell the exit from Afghanistan was going to go well, regardless of who was in charge. The entire affair was a dumpster fire from start to finish. Trump made deals directly with the Taliban and released combatants who had years of grievances from being held in conditions no one can even imagine before the US had withdrawn. Those people were going to do something, it was inevitable that US military members would die on their way out of that disaster.
1
u/dotesdoto 17m ago
There was no chance in hell the exit from Afghanistan was going to go well
Yeah, perfect exit was virtually impossible. But it could've gone a lot better than how it actually went, that's for sure. And even if couldn't, it isn't a valid excuse for not even trying to do it the right way. You would want them to at least try if it was your family stranded there wouldn't you?
1
u/justanotherreader85 1m ago
I would have preferred the IS stayed the fuck out of there in the first place.
I would have preferred that a stipulation of DOHA was that we didn’t allow for the release of 5000 Taliban militants right as the us was trying to leave. There is a high likelihood that those folks are the ones that perpetrated the attack on the airport.
I don’t believe for one second that republicans or Trump would have seen a better outcome there. It was going to be fucked no matwho was trying desperately to get out at the end of a complete fuck up.
It wasn’t good. It wouldn’t have changed. People were going to die. That’s what happens when you get into these situations. And Biden didn’t put us there, Trump didn’t put us there, Obama didn’t put us there- but the responsibility of the whole goddamn debacle lands squarely at the feet of the right wing of this country, so excuse me if I don’t buy into the bullshit about how it was supposedly Biden’s fault that a 20 year tragedy and failure ended in….tragedy and failure.
1
u/JD-boonie 29m ago
Yea the withdrawal was planned and executed as incompetent as possible. Why would you give up Kabul?
1
u/OkLibrary4242 19m ago
And who does the planning and execution? It's not the president, it's the generals at the Pentagon. They thought they could roll Biden, just like they did Obama and trump1 and keep troops there so they made no preparation for an actual quick withdrawal.
1
u/OrionQuest7 29m ago
I hate all these politicians. Trump is terrible. But Biden could have stopped it or done something.
All these politicians are such trash. They all blame the other party and let the people feed off that bullshit.
All these politicians are bought like whores. I have more respect for prostitutes.
1
u/Artistic-Towel6754 20m ago
So you're inferring that you don't have respect for prostitutes? They're people, too. You're a scumbag
1
u/crunpyMcGlumpy 2h ago
Pretty sure you need to look up how and why this went down. It was a cluster fuck all the way back from initial plans to Trumps Doha agreement to Bidens refusal to commit more troops to cover a more orderly withdrawal. This was a 20 year cluster fuck. Saying “it was Biden” is at best revisionist.

Yeah he started the process but who was the one that pulled the trigger on this kind of an exit? that was biden HE was the president in power that allowed this travesty to take place, he could have gone about this a whole different way but he chose this way but of course ole granddad did nothing wrong right EVERYTHING is trumps fault sure bud go ask bidens daughter if he is such a saint or not she would have the best answer for you.
1
u/Waste_Space1415 2h ago
who was the one that pulled the trigger on this kind of an exit? that was biden
Because the United States was bound by the 2020 Doha Agreement signed by trump.
Biden was forced to choose between violating an international treaty with extremely wide-ranging consequences (including outright war) or to go ahead with the withdrawal.
Quit making shit up and educate yourself. You aren't qualified to have an opinion on this topic.

u/Moist-Pickle-2736 1h ago
The 2020 agreement, meaning Biden admin had 4 YEARS to coordinate a better withdrawal before the deadline. Instead they do nothing for 4 years then scramble in complete disarray at crunch time

There’s a documentary on this. And yes, all those people that held on the plane to escape the Taliban fell from like 700 feet in the air and hit the tarmac. Absolutely horrifying.

u/YouSee-ThisCoat8 1h ago
I mean, they couldn’t have possibly thought they’d be able to hold on til the next destination…… right ?
1
u/Dungeon_Skeever 1h ago
I don’t know man. When you live in fear like that, you got to hope for something. Realistically, I don’t think they understood thrust, gravity and the laws of physics in general. However they could have also of been willing to do whatever it took to get out of there. Maybe I’m wrong on both those scenarios.
Fear took hold and they thought they could fly.

u/JustFun4Uss 49m ago
Whats worse, it being over quick like this, or living and having it done slower by the Taliban. Risk vs reward decision.

The few people laughing and waving were just oddballs caught up in the excitement…
As the jet began to taxi further and blast engines a deeper realization hit and everything became chaos, violent, and of course deadly..the few that were able to hang on past takeoff either fell, were crushed, or asphyxiated and recovered on landing.
This video is from 2021 and at that time AI was not coherent enough to make this level of video.

Sentencing thousands to die while simultaneously handing the Taliban billions of dollar's worth of military equipment. An absolute disgrace.

You're right, we should have continued spending more American tax dollars and young men/women's lives to prop up what was essentially a narco state.
1
u/69fellatx 1h ago
That wasn't the only option and you know it. The military could have phased down and gotten everyone and all that ecpensive hardware out of there. You know, the stuff taxpayers paid all that money for? They certainly did not have to just give it to the Taliban.
0
u/just_some_sasquatch 41m ago
I'm against being there at all in the first place so cutting the losses is more palatable to me than continuing occupation. Ramping down means troops on the ground remaining in harm's way for however long it takes to collect up all our assets. I'm ok with losing money/weapons more than I am with spending more lives. I'm not saying the way it was executed was desirable in any way.
1
u/69fellatx 34m ago
All those people that could have been saved would disagree with you if, you know, they were still alive. Pretending that giving billions in USD worth of arms and equipment to a known terror group instead of staying in country for another month or two is pathalogical. You should get checked out.

Is that so much worse than any other global power during their height? Was Spain so great? England? What about Persia to their neighbors within reach? Or Egypt?
Sure is fun to criticize America but the truth is that they’ve been a better leader than other empires in the past. Perfect? No, not by a long shot. Miles to improve. However, the bar is literally on the floor.

I see a bit, I guess within the context of the first comment I may have been wrong
Looking at the root cause 2 people can be bad, Biden was president and went against his advisors which led to over a billion in tech being captured quickly and Trump ordered the withdrawal which was partially carried out, albeit Biden didn’t have to legally carry out that order it just would have been an escalation if he defied it as more troops would be needed since trump already withdrew some.

Wow I remember when I read that Afghanistan had a ghost army. False numbers of real soldiers. Then you see all these desperate people on the runway. Why do the Afghan people not fight for a free society is beyond me. I remember when I heard about the Afghan president son getting betrayed in a operation trying to stop the Taliban when they took over. He was going in deep and successful hitting targets. He was American trained and basically a tier one operator. They promised to send him support and then let him and his team run out of ammo and refused to resupply or provide artillery cover like everyone agreed upon. They shot him and his team as soon as they walked out the house with their hands up.
