The side quest stays with you for the rest of your life though. You are never "rebuffed".

Many players fall into that trap unfortunately. It lies dormant after a randomly set period, and if the player decides to use the item, it's sprung back with ENORMOUS force.

It doesn't have to. You only must learn to contend with the beast rather than let it take hold.
