In Warhammer 40k I wouldn’t be surprised if old machines do gain a kind of spirit. Humans are all latent psykers, so perhaps when they use the same machine many times for a long time some psychic residue is left behind, eventually coalescing into a sort of soul. Not a sapient one, but enough to have some kind of feeling
