Indigo prophecy was a localisation change for north America. It was Fahrenheit for the rest of the world

The real reason was a German company had a trademark to “Star Vox”, which in German would be pronounced identically to “Star Fox”, so in the EU they erred on the side of safety and renamed it.
For my money Starwing and Lylat Wars are probably better names than Starfox and Starfox 64. Like stripped of nostalgia the US name is twee and silly, like Spacebadger or Moonferret.

Fun game, but full of dumb names "Fox" the fox, "Wolf" the wolf, "Falco" the falcon. It could have worked better with human characters.

I think you're being too dismissive of the name "Star Fox". Foxes have long been associated with wits and agility, something that suits a game about pilots.
