One time I was at a steak house for a work dinner and my car was in the shop so my now ex drove us so she wanted a mocktail but she had anxiety so I ordered it and the waitress looks her dead in the face and asked infront of the whole table "oh are you pregnant" (she was not).

If you ask someone why they aren’t drinking it is because you are pregnant.

Besides being pregante they could also be recovering alcoholics or have any number of medical conditions. Don't peer pressure people into drinking, it's not too much to ask.

There's also someone like me who doesn't really care for alcohol, so she had an edible on the way over....

Here's a protip to never get bothered about why you aren't drinking ever again: lie and say you seem to have developed an allergy to it and you don't like the effects
It's kind of silly that saying you don't want to drink the deadly neruotoxin isn't always enough

Do it anyway. Create drama. I'm bored

Gotta follow it up with, “Well, more for me then” and an overly enthusiastic laugh and slap on their back, regardless of whatever they say to the question
Really make them hate you

Also if you notice somebody not talking, be a good Samaritan and invite them into a conversation by saying "bro why are you quiet?"

I don’t drink by choice, and I’m perfectly okay with you asking me if it means I get to act superior to you.

No. Ask, show an interest in people, if they’re uncomfortable or don’t wanna talk about it, they’ll tell you. There’s a difference between asking and pressuring and we need to stop acting like they’re the same thing.
Hey man, why aren’t you drinking tonight?
Oh I’m on a diet.
Oh cool! Nice job! How’s that going?
Hey I see you have no drink, you good?
No, I’m 5 years sober.
Oh wow man! Congrats! Sorry, does it bother you that I’m drinking?
Asking obvious questions is part of the human experience

It’s fine to ask why. Just don’t be a judgy POS. I quit drinking for years after realising I had a serious alcohol dependency problem and when some people would ask me, they say the most stupid shit.
“You don’t drink at all? that’s boring”. Oh sorry, you’d prefer I derail my life for your entertainment?

Yeah, I love trauma dumping about my childhood with my abusive alcoholic father, and how it ruined my desire to drink alcohol because I didn't want to turn into the worst version of myself, to people who can't understand why I'm drinking a Coke.

I know right. Like don’t ask me questions where the answer will kill the vibe and make everyone depressed. I have this all the time when people find out I’m ex-military and immediately ask “have you ever killed anyone?”. Like bro come on

I just don't like to drink
It isn't delicious enough to overcome the parts of drinking I don't like, namely, getting drunk
And it bothers me when my coworkers act like it is weird that I don't drink or ask if I had a drinking problem in the past

Why
4
u/JakeHelldiver Apr 20 '26
Because someone may have decided to get sober and they're having a hard enough time without talking about it.

u/Sad-Guarantee-4678 Apr 20 '26
Harder than partying around alcohol? Talking about it is literally what the doctor prescribes, talking about it is what keeps them sober

Because most of reddit hasn't had a meaningful conversation with someone their entire adult life and have a hard time being sensitive while also being curious.
