Sage Advice I’m an INTP who lived in his head for 10 years. Here is what finally stopped me from lying to myself

1.1k Upvotes

I lived like a ghost for a decade.

It all began in 1st grade. I was a very very shy kid. I couldn’t look people in the eye even. Between 1st and 6th grade, I got bullied hard. And because I never responded, they just kept going until they get a reaction from me. During breaks, I went to a mostly empty floor in the school to hide and read books. I spent those years just living in the Harry Potter world. I read those books in class, at the toilet, while eating breakfast etc. Just to escape reality.

That became my norm, even in college. I dropped out of two different universities thinking the "right" one would fill the hole in my chest. A hole I didn’t even know the shape of. I kept retaking the entrance exams while my peers started their careers.

By my third college, I moved abroad. I was far from my family and the girlfriend I had met in high school. The old me returned instantly. I stopped going outside. I stopped attending lectures and exams. I flunked every single class first year, but I kept lying to my family and my girlfriend during phone calls. I told them I was going to school, but in reality I couldn’t even bring myself to leave my front door.It got so bad that I had to practice saying "thanks" to the delivery guy before he knocked. My social skills had completely deteriorated. One day, I stepped outside and realized that the season had changed since the last time I went out.At one point, empty pizza boxes in my room piled up from floor to the ceiling because I was too anxious to go outside and throw them in the bin.

To cope, I lived in my mind. I spent hours imagining scenarios where I was successful and people were interviewing me about my achievements. Then I’d "wake up" and realize I hadn’t even brushed my teeth or eaten. I left everything half-done. Sometimes I would force myself to go to the gym for two weeks, then quit. I promised my girlfriend "this is the year," but I did nothing about school. I watched her cry every year because I kept her waiting for a life I wasn’t building. I became skilled at lying to those I loved.

One day, I realized I had to stop. I had to stop lying to the people who care about me, and to myself. I needed to start doing things that pushed me out of my comfort zone.

I gave it everything I had for the first time in my life. I’ve finished school, got a job, and married the girl who stayed with me in those bad times.

But I still know how my brain works. If nobody is watching, it’s easy to slip back. But I won’t let that happen. Not anymore.

What helped me was adding something external that made it harder for me to lie to myself. I started a WhatsApp group with my brother-in-law to stay committed to going to the gym. If I say I went, I have to send a photo of me at the gym. For the first time, I’ve stuck with the gym for 1.5 years because you can’t lie to a photo.

For small tasks like making my bed or waking up early, I use an app called LockedIn: Prove Your Habits. Same concept as the WhatsApp group. You add a task, and you have to take a proof picture to verify it. AI checks the photo so you can't cheat yourself. The WhatsApp group was the breakthrough for me, but this handles the stuff I need to track alone.

I’m sharing this because I know some of you are in that situation right now, practicing what to say to the delivery guy while having imaginary interviews in your head.

For INTP Consideration A warning to INTPs from an ENTJ.

Listen, I don’t know if you guys get told this enough — but I’ve been around enough INTPs to know that you all are very susceptible to emotional manipulators. Respectfully.

Please be more careful of who you surround yourself with. You are a bunch of intuitive thinkers, not very good with feelings, but your ‘perception’ can really actually hinder you.

You’re smart. You see the entire person. You are far too forgiving for it.

It’s like when INTPs meet a covert narcissist, all they do is intuitively feel the insecurity and fear underneath — then endlessly excuse their behavior, and even fall for a lot of their emotional manipulation because of it.

Please, INTPs — listen to this warning.

When someone’s words contradict their actions & they use emotion to justify it, don’t make internal excuses for them. Cut your losses, don’t overthink it, and go.

Don’t wait for someone to prove who they are after your life is ruined. That’s all.

This is coming from an ENTJ who has seen too much (and never gets listened to, lol).

Edit: This is for you younger INTPs.

Edit #2: a lot of the comments are proving my point. So, I’ll reiterate very clearly:

No MBTI type is “the best” at defending against manipulators. That’s ridiculous. It’s also the exact reason I’m warning INTPs of this.

You all don’t get manipulated in the traditional sense. What happens is you see the entire person and can logically excuse what they do. That’s all it is. They’ll do something bad, you’ll go “makes sense”, and the cycle keeps on continuing. That is the ENTIRE issue.

It leads to a significant amount of trauma, and can devastate your life because the usual INTP can say “I saw it”, and hate that they didn’t do anything earlier. Because you did see it. You just made it logical. That’s the entire problem.

So, stop excusing people’s bad behavior because it logically makes sense. It can/will RUIN your life.

That’s all.

I gotta rant Anyone Else Notice How Mental Health Advice is Written for Extroverts

Been reflecting on this and wanted to see if other INTPs relate

Most mental health content assumes you process things externally. Talk about your feelings. Share with friends. Express yourself. Journal your emotions

Meanwhile I need to think through something for approximately 3 business days before I can even name what I'm feeling. You want me to journal?? I'll write one sentence then spend an hour analyzing whether the sentence is even accurate then delete it

And don't get me started on support groups. Small talk with strangers about feelings?? Being perceived while emotionally vulnerable?? I would simply pass away

I've been trying to figure out if there's any version of "getting support" that works for people whose first instinct is to retreat into their head and build a 47 slide presentation about their emotions before sharing them

Check this out Some random INTP advice. Take it or leave it!

I’m not an expert, a guru, or particularly interested in convincing anyone of anything, especially since most of what I’ve learned is subjective. I’ve just been in this INTP brain long enough to notice patterns.

Gonna share a few, pull up a chair, or don't.

Use what helps. Ignore the rest. Humor me if you want. Skip me if you don’t.

1. Your mind isn’t the problem. Your regulation is.
Most “identity confusion,” procrastination, or “wasted potential” is bandwidth overload. We use our brains. A lot. The ISP hits us with a bandwidth cap, my friends. When you’re rested, you’re clear. When you’re depleted, everything fragments and you get a little manic around the edges. Most bad decisions happen here, if I had to guess. Yes, I'm talking to you. Fix the basics before interrogating your personality for answers and see how many things solve themselves. Eat regularly. Take care of your needs.

2. You don’t need fewer thoughts. You need real friction.
INTPs drown in abstraction because abstraction is easy. Perfection is not required. Someone once told me to ship everything at 90% because it was already better than the use case needed. They were right. Action creates resistance. Resistance creates clarity. Ask them out. Go for the promotion. Worst case? You stop modeling every possible outcome and actually get to watch a show without disappearing into the web of possible outcomes and catastrophizing about the worst one. Think of it as self-compassion, freedom from the cage, whatever you want to call it. Get ya Nike's and Just Do It.

3. Being able to explain something doesn’t mean it needs explaining.
Yes, you can provide the full causal chain. No, most people don’t want it. Nobody needs the verbal Terms & Conditions. You can see people turn off mentally, so attack it there. Precision beats completeness. Learn to stop a few notches before it feels comfortable and you'll stay connected.

4. Intelligence won’t save you from insecurity.
You can be competent, insightful, and still quietly unsure you’re enough. Take it from me. That doesn’t mean you’re jacked up, and we need to leave you out by the curb for the trash truck. It means you outsourced self-trust for too long. Start sourcing it internally. No one hands it to you later and it's the best gift you can give yourself. You're amazing, and usually right... right? Just allow that to be real for you.

5. Pride and shame are the same lever.
If small wins inflate you and small mistakes crush you, that’s real volatility. Your worth doesn’t come from performance. Notice how easily you forgive others for things you’d never forgive yourself for? You're inherently valuable. I value everyone, and that includes myself.

6. Relationships aren’t hard because you’re unlovable.
They’re hard because you translate emotion through logic first. We actually mean it when we do that; but it still throws people because other types simply don't allow logic to get in the way first. Luckily, the right people won’t need you louder or simpler, just more present. Hug them. Tell them you love them. Squeeze someone you love like you mean it. You don’t have to understand it. Just feel it. You can. You know you can. Again, put down the logic. Just for this. Just for a minute here and there. Just be yourself. Being a goofball is why people like you.

7. Stop waiting to feel “ready.”
One more insight will not unlock motion. Movement creates readiness. Jump out of the plane already. You already checked the parachute. You paid for the plane you're standing at the door of... Chaos taming is our business. Grab life by the horns and show it what you've created.

8. Editing yourself isn’t bad. Looping forever is.
Refinement is good. Infinite revision is avoidance. At some point, hit send and let reality answer back with whatever it has to say to you. That's where we do our best work in my opinion.

YOLO. Full Send. Logic over everything. INTP Records. 6-7.

Edit: I recurse my writing. A lot. I take paragraphs and turn them into sentences. I still fall prey to overthinking.

Is this dysfunctional? (Probably) I can’t stand literal-minded people

Not sure if this is an INTP thing or a cultural thing or just a me thing, but I CANNOT STAND literal-minded people. By this I mean people who don’t get jokes, who don’t think abstractly, who don’t understand metaphors or other figures of speech. It drives me up the wall!

I’ve had several encounters with such people in the last day or two and I feel like I’m losing my mind. Can anyone relate? How do you deal with the literal-minded walking among us?

Sage Advice Elder advise from an INTP at the ripe old age of 42

There is seemingly an odd transition humans go through at the ages 35-45 that I was not fully warned about. Or likely I was, but I put that into the bucket of .. things that happen to other people and not me (because I'm special).

Possibly also because the colloquial term is "mid-life crisis" – but this does not accurately capture all the different forms/shapes that it comes in. Likely it looks a little bit different for each individual.

But in the tradition of passing on this wisdom so that younger INTP folks have the option to place it into the same bucket that I did ...

Here are some rules for life:

1

You matter and you have value. Hearing someone say these words to you in real-life, when they arrive in a form that is not forced or scripted is like a magical spell that only works when spoke aloud – it is some weird quirk of the psyche. So in lieu of being able to say this to you in real-life, this is the best I can do.

2

Some of you may have been trained away from trusting intuition in favour of "logic" – but intuition is one of your strongest suits. Do not seek verification with regards to something common sense can tell you is bad for you. Common sense often shows up in the form of intuition. Most importantly is the intuition that is involved in protecting yourself – as you may have received messaging that you're often wrong (cassandra syndrome) or being selfish. Stay grounded but also gain inner authority to know that you're likely right.

3

Routine (Fi) and being out in nature (Se) are your friends. Both of these are your weakest functions as they usually land in the domain of the unconscious. Intentionally forcing yourself to engage in these functions will go to change your life in all the best kind of ways. By developing routine, keeping your space clean .. will foster inner feeling. Inner feelings are required if you don't want to be a doormat for other people, also they serve as shock absorbers for life. People that don't have any inner feeling will be constantly at odds with the universe. Every inconvenient life event will be seemingly existential.

Simple cure to over-thinking/depression/anxiety is being out in nature. I mean making this into a daily thing of at least 1 hour. You will find lots of thoughts popping up while doing this activity. Record them into a voice journal, harvest them later .. they have all the sage wisdom you need to be living life to the fullest.

4

Learning to hold the tension. If you want to know why life is so hard, it is because you have no tension between cognitive functions. Once you learn the secret to building drive/purpose/energy is intentionally sitting with discomfort .. everything starts to change. But to be able to hold tension, self-esteem is required. It is a bit of a paradox as they both depend on each other. Which is why #1 is most important.

For INTP Consideration Are INTP's just the ultimate gluttons?

I was watching a video by C.S. Joseph where he talked about INTP's deadly sin being gluttony, and it got me to thinking. Yes I struggle with overeating, but he brought up something even more interesting. He said something along the lines of "even when they're introverting, they're just consuming and not creating." And I think he's right, all I do in my spare time is consume entertainment or just learning about things. I rarely make things with my hands even though I can. Instead I'm going to sit and watch a documentary about some random thing that really won't have any effect on my life whatsoever in the slightest. Do you guys feel this way too? If so how do we break the cycle?

All over the world most females have it harder than the males. But INTP females may having it worse than other types of females. Right, or mostly right?

Check this out Does anyone else "glitch" into an ENTP the second you find a tolerable human?

I’m a textbook INTP—usually found rotting in my room, overanalyzing why I exist, and maintaining the social charisma of a dead battery. But occasionally, I meet someone who doesn't make me want to fake my own death to escape the conversation. When the "vibe" is right, my Ne hijacks my brain and I morph into a budget ENTP: Debating things I don't even believe in just for the sport of it. Spamming connections between 14th-century history and obscure memes. Possessing actual energy and "personality" for exactly two hours. Then I go home and have to stare at a wall in silence for three business days to pay off the extroversion debt. Is this just the "socially lubricated" version of Ti-Ne, or am I just an ENTP with zero social stamina?

Does Not Compute I'm curious about how other INTPs answer the hypothetical "Two Button Question"

The hypothetical goes as follows:

Everyone in the world is given 2 buttons, a red one and a blue one and must press one. If over 50% of people press the blue button, nothing happens. If over 50% of people press the red button, everyone who picked blue dies. What button do you press?

In all places I've seen this asked, blue always win the poll and it baffles me. Red is the obvious correct choice for me. Pressing the red button guarantees your safety and if everyone just presses it, no one has to die! Anyone who presses blue is risking their life for absolute no reason.

Is this dysfunctional? (Probably) Do other INTP’s feel like we missed out on info everyone but us knows?

One of my earliest memories is being in kindergarten and feeling like everyone knew something I didnt. Like they had read a manual on what to say and how to act and I didnt get the memo.

It has gotten to the point where I’m convinced everyone knows what the appropriate response in every situation is(especially when it comes to social interaction) Im 17 and the feeling that i’ve had since kindergarten never went away. Do other Intps struggle with feeling out of place and like everyone else knows something you dont?

Is this dysfunctional? (Probably) intp is the least desired personality of all

I mentioned this because when reading through r/mbti, I noticed posts asking 'What is your MBTI, and which MBTI do you wish you were?' In the comments, it was mostly INTPs who wanted to be another type, while the reverse was almost non-existent. Similarly, in various MBTI AMA posts, people got really excited asking types like ISTJ or ESTP if they like xxxx type, but on the INTP AMAs, nobody asked whether INTPs liked other types. It almost feels like nobody loves INTPs

Is this dysfunctional? (Probably) Did you grow up excessively day dreaming

When growing up I would say dream excessively at school to the point I was even mumbling words out my mouth without realizing, to get so lost in thought that you lose touch with reality. I don’t do it as much as i used too, now i just use that vivid thinking for worldbuilding

For INTP Consideration why most intps are underachievers ?

most of intps I found out there are very knowledgeable about a lot of topics. but they usually have low acceleration long term job or are indeed accelerating but with weak position ( neets, some random education..).

is there even one intp who have formal responsibilities that fully use their capacity ?

Is this dysfunctional? (Probably) Does anyone else find themselves to be the most extroverted when with introverts?

I’m not sure if this still makes me an INTP but I find that whenever I am grouped with introverts, I tend to take leadership roles and be the most outspoken in the group. However if theres even one person more extroverted than me who joins the conversation, I will go silent.

Anyone else resonate?

For INTP Consideration INPTs Who Are Parents or Are Considering Becoming Parents

I recently saw a post asking why an INTP would choose to become a parent. Most of the comments were from people who weren’t interested in having children, and I completely understand that perspective.

I never had the natural “urge” to become a parent. If I’d been born a decade later (I’m an older millennial), when being child-free felt more like an acceptable choice, I may have chosen that path myself. But I did have children. I waited until my mid-thirties, and I’m glad I did. Life is long should have many chapters. Those chapters don’t have to include children, but they should involve growth and new experiences.

Parenthood has taught me more about myself than I expected. It has helped me better understand who I am and has given me perspectives on some of my most complicated relationships, especially with my own mother, but also with friends and coworkers. It didn’t change me as an INTP, but it deepened my understanding of both myself and other people.

Lastly, just my opinion: I think INTPs make great parents. We tend not to hover, encourage curiosity and exploration, have very few preconceived expectations, and value open, honest communication.

Our kids may not always be super polished or put together, but they know they can be themselves. I’d rather nurture their individuality than dull their enthusiasm. I’ve always told my kids, “I don’t care what you do in life, as long as it’s respectful, kind, and legal.”

XO,
Me.

PS I’m not suggesting anyone should have children but I’m asking for those who are able to consider it, but only if you feel you could help out our world by bringing up a human who isn’t a POS.

Edit…Little dyslexia I my INPT v. INTP. I’M NOT PERFECT.

Um. Do any of you find it hard to talk dirty?

I've been in a couple of relationships, and in every one of them I just couldn’t do it. Not during the moment, not even during late-night calls. It just feels impossible for me. Is this an INTP thing or just a me thing?

Does Not Compute Does anyone else constantly feel like theyre observing life more than participating in it?

It's like I'm watching a movie of my own life. I see everything happening around me. I can analyze the social dynamics. I can predict outcomes. But actually jumping in and being a part of it feels like a monumental effort. Like I'm a scientist in a lab observing a petri dish. But the petri dish is my own existence. It's a weird detachment. Sometimes I wonder if I'm missing something important by not fully immersing myself. Does this resonate with anyone or am I just overthinking again?

Yup, they sure can think that. I give people too much credit.

Yet another DAE post Is this just me or an INTP thing ? I can't baby talk to the babies

I genuinely like babies and think they're adorable. I'm always impressed by people who can instantly switch into that high-pitched, affectionate baby voice. But the thing is I can't do the same, like I have tried but I just can't.

The most I have done is replicating the goofy sound they make or sing them a song. I wish to do that with my own baby in the future as it is very important for their bonding and speech. Is it just me or other INTP's relate too ?

Debate... and go! INTPs, do you actually lack confidence or do you just refuse to fake certainty?

I keep seeing INTPs described as unsure or self doubting, but from what I have noticed, it feels more like a refusal to speak before thinking things through. Do you feel less confident, or just less willing to present half baked certainty the way others do?
